Three-day music festival coming to Greene County

Contributing Writer

Monday, April 14, 2008

Inspiration can come from unusual sources. Dan Clayton, one of the co-founders of the Dayton Music Fest, was working on the local indie rock showcase two years ago when he realized he could use his festival experience to promote other musical styles.

"I had talked about how I would like to expand what we were doing and how I couldn't believe how much bluegrass was alive in the Dayton area," Clayton said. "I started writing down some ideas."

Clayton soon joined forces with Will Leasure and Ron Mullikin, who are not involved with DMF, to conceive and organize Bellbrook Jamboree. The three-day roots music festival at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia May 16-18 will feature performances by Dry Branch Fire Squad, the Dan Tyminski Band, Josh Ritter, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers and more.

The event was originally going to be held at Bellbrook Canoe Rental, a ten-acre property owned by Mullikin, but as interest grew and more acts such as The Grascals, Ron Block and King Wilkie signed on, it became evident that space wasn't big enough. After looking at several locations, the organizers of Bellbrook Jamboree decided on the Greene County Fairgrounds.

"We were afraid we might not have enough room for the responses that we've been getting," Clayton said. "We're now able to have RV camping with electric and water, and we now have the room to grow it as big as we want."

Three-day passes are available for $40 through May 1 at www.bellbrookjamboree.com. After that the price rises to $50. Single day tickets are available and are $20 for Friday, $25 for Saturday and $15 for Sunday.
