Tunes at a glance: Best-of album lists from 11 music publications

Staff Writer

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Everyone's a critic nowadays, but then, they always were. The collective "we" always has had an opinion to share — and thanks to the blog boom, the proliferation of social-networking sites and our standby favorite, e-mail, we have better tools for getting it out there than we did before. As 2007 came to a nice, neat close there was no shortage of "best of" lists out there chronicling the year that was: pop culture, celebrities, movies, fashion and, of course, music have all been recalled in a seemingly infinite number of countdowns.

The beauty of year-end lists is that no one is wrong, but you can go astray when you rely on just one to guide you. We've compiled 11 from various music publications and the Web that seemed worth sharing. You'll see some interesting patterns emerge … artists only mentioned once (Paul McCartney), twice (Miranda Lambert) or on nearly every list (LCD Soundsystem). Which list is right? The fun part is judging for yourself — after all, you're the best critic you know.
