One of the newest bars to the Brown Street strip is Bargos Grill & Tap. The bar has been completely remodeled following the closing of Walnut Hills, the previous tenant, and features a large rectangular bar that anchors the space. The surface of the bar has been finished in a buffed stainless steel and if the light hits it just right you'll think you're looking at a hologram — especially if you've had a beverage or two. The interior of Bargos features the usual beer signs and mirrors as well as 13 large screen TVs that you can't miss. We hear the chicken tenders are outstanding, although we have only dabbled with the menu yielding mixed results.

Dewey's Pizza

Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 4-10 p.m. Sundays.
Kitchen Hours: See above.
Drink Specials: None
As a gourmet pizza place one might ask why we've included Dewey's on a list of bars and pubs, we have several reasons. First: they offer a nice selection of craft beers along with a limited wine selection that changes about every four months. Second: they have great pizza. The taste comes at a price but if you're looking for the best pizza on the strip this is your place. Third: super service. Whatever they do during the training and hiring process we only wish it was replicated everywhere. The wait staff and management circle the large contemporary space seeking ways to meet the needs of their customers. Need a refill? No worries, the next member of wait staff that passes by is likely to bring back whatever your glass was lacking. That team approach to serving the customer, great pizza and salads and a cool space make this a must stop — and a great potential starting point for a pub-crawl on the strip.

Fieldhouse
Basics: 1126 Brown St. Dayton, OH 45409 [Map] Call (937) 461-2111
Hours: 7 p.m.-2:20 a.m. Saturday through Thursday; 3 p.m.-2:20 a.m. Fridays. No kitchen.
Drink Specials: Sundays $1.50 domestic bottles; Monday and Tuesdays $1 Coors Light bottles; Wednesdays the famous Fieldhouse Fish Bowl drinks for only $12.50 (regularly priced at $18, this is a fish bowl filled with ingredients including vodka, gin, rum, blue curacao and triple sec … It's basically a potent take on the Long Island Ice Tea); Thursdays $3 for first a domestic draft with refills costing $1 thereafter; Fridays features a Happy Hour from 3-7 p.m.
Stops to the Fieldhouse on Brown Street found it hoppin'. This is clearly one of the hot spots for students to hang out in a traditional bar space. Walls are decorated with the usual signs and posters along with a few monitors for watching the game. Seating areas included worn vinyl covered booths throughout the space, several tables with chairs and a small U-shaped bar. Our recent stop found the Fieldhouse so packed we couldn't get to the bar to order a drink let alone turn around to make our way to the door. Which brings up a point about safety regardless of where you are … check for the exits when you get there … you'll probably never need to use them but if you do, you'll be thanking us for the reminder. Oh, and Irish Car Bombs are $5 ... we're guessing you'll be thanking us for that little tidbit as well.

Flanagan's Pub

Made famous by its annual St. Patty's day celebrations Flanagan's Pub, on the corner of Stewart and Rubicon streets, continues to attract patrons of all ages. The space is cozy and is decorated with the usual bar signs and video games. A recent addition to the rear of pub gives patrons a safer way to come and go as they meet up with their buds as well as a second bar area to get that frosty beverage when sitting in the outdoor patio area, weather permitting. The patio is covered in the cooler months giving patrons looking for a smoke break a little cover from the winter weather. The crowd is mixed with revilers of all ages looking to relax with a game of darts, a video game of skill or just chill to the music — beverage in hand. Service is quick and attentive … even if they were all distracted by the Bud Lite Girls.

Hickory Bar-B-Q
Basics: 1082 Brown St. Dayton, OH 45409 [Map] Call (937) 228-5252
Hours: 4-11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 4 p.m.-12:00 a.m. Fridays; 3 p.m.-12 a.m. Saturdays; 3-11 p.m. Sundays.
Kitchen Hours: See above.
Hickory Bar-B-Q has been serving the locals long before Brown street ever had Erma Bombeck's name attached to it. This old-school bar/restaurant made our pub crawl list as one of the best values on the strip. Offering classic cocktails and great food at student friendly prices (they even accept the UD Flyer Express card) Hickory shouldn't be over looked on a Brown Street adventure. Hickory's bar area is smaller than many but has that dark, comfortable, worn-in feeling many newer bars only wish they had. With shorter hours than most of the other bars in the area, you'll want to make this one of your first stops on a night out.

Jimmie's Cornerstone Bar & Grille
Basics: 1001 Brown St. Dayton, OH 45409 [Map] Call (937) 424-1784 or visit www.thecornerstonebar.com

Parking: This can be a little confusing to those unfamiliar. The parking lot across the street from Jimmie's next to the Taco Bell is the place to park. There are a few spots behind the bar but those are hit and miss — if you're looking for a sure spot this is the way to go
Drink specials: Happy hour from 7 a.m. 9 p.m. featuring discount prices. One of the longest happy hours to our knowledge.
The corner of Brown and Wyoming streets has been home to a bar for decades. For several years Jimmies Cornerstone Bar & Grille has filled the bill for a local neighborhood hangout. We found the night-time crowd to a mixed bag of urban hipsters to suburban line-workers to the local weather man (seriously) pulling up a stool to enjoy one of the eight beers on tap, more than 50 bottled beers or sipping from their favorite cocktail. With a full menu and early morning hours Jimmies can be your spot for at nearly any time — day or night.

Milano's Atlantic City Subs

Offering classic subs and pizzas, Milano's Atlantic City Subs stepped up its game a few years back by expanding its operation into a large, open and contemporary space. Most importantly, they've added a bar area. With floor to ceiling windows, Milano's is a great place to enjoy a pizza or sub with your favorite libation and keep an eye on any outside action. Seating is available in nearly an endless combination of booths and tables. The Cheesesteak pizza is a must if you're up for a food adventure. Who would have thought mayo on a pizza would work? Let us reassure you, it does. Like BW3s, the kitchen stays open late so if you're looking for a snack to go with your beverage, you're in luck. Karaoke on Wednesdays and live music on the weekends keep things moving long after the food's gone. Be sure to check their Web site for music and band updates.

Timothy's Bar
Basics: 1818 Brown St. Dayton, OH 45409 [Map] Call (937) 222-7666
Hours: Vary wildly.
Timothy's is the odd bar out in our Brown Street pub-crawl. The space has seen better days with holes in the ceiling tiles, wires covered with dust dinosaurs and a floor covering worn through to the core, but that didn't seem to stop the a madhouse of UD students from congregating there. The Lizards found Timothy's thumping with a mix of '80s tunes being spun by a D.J. who had folks swaying to the beats. Be sure the check out the wall (a signature Timothy's cocktail). This drink is an enjoyable fruity concoction that will make you feel like you've hit the wall the next morning. Irregular hours make planning a trip to Timothy's difficult at best. On nights when the bar staff said they'd be open we found the spot closed. So, if you're planning a trip to Timothy's, have a back up plan in mind. Definitely a bar for students — consider yourself warned.
