Restaurant owner at The Greene: Customer base not enough to stay open

BEAVERCREEK — Estilo Mediterranean Grille in The Greene has closed, the restaurant's co-owner said Monday, April 21.
"We just didn't have enough of a customer base to support the business," said Tayfun Isik, Estilo's managing partner/owner.

The restaurant, which succeeded Café Istanbul at 72 Plum St., was the only non-chain restaurant in The Greene, and the first restaurant to close outright in the complex. The Greene is in the process of building a second phase of residential and commercial structures adjacent to the existing complex.
"We are sorry to see Estilo Mediterranean Grille close, but this creates a great opportunity for a new restaurant or retailer to enter in a high profile location, where many other restaurants continue to set sales records for the region," said Michael Duffey, spokesman for The Greene.
Tables inside the darkened restaurant are set with napkins and tableware and appear to be ready for customers, and owners posted no signs or notices informing diners why the restaurant is not open. Isik said he didn't think about posting a sign and regrets any inconvenience to customers.
Estilo Mediterranean Grille replaced Café Istanbul in November 2007 when the business was sold to Isik and to Eddie Springfield, who served as executive sous chef at an Orlando hotel. At the time, Isik said Estilo's would focus on Mediterranean fusion cuisine and tapas, and would offer live music.
Isik said today that he and Springfield had "great passion about this concept, but it just didn't work out well for us. We believe that it wasn't the right concept for Beavercreek."
The owner said his restaurant's customer comment cards suggested Estilo had a 90 percent satisfaction rate, but that apparently wasn't enough to keep diners coming back.
The restaurant stopped selling gift certificates in late February, Isik said, so most outstanding gift certificates have been redeemed. Owners will not be offering refunds to any remaining gift-certificate holders, he said.

I think a Melting Pot would be a great addition to the Greene. My wife and I dined at their location in Myrtle Beach. It was a true dining “experience.”

I went yesterday with my boyfriend for dinner… and what was my surprise when we saw it closed!!! How come???!!! The best food and only original restaurant (NO chains, please). This just can happen in the States! The price was expensive than other restaurants, I agree. But, please, the quality of the food was outstanding!!! I’m tired of disgusting grease cheese American food all around. Only burgers, American pizzas (nothing to mean with the Italian original one, of course)… s**t & more s**t!

Drew’s comments were right on target. You people need to learn how to manage (and not waste) your money. Just throwing hard-earned $$ right out the window by spending on this over-priced food. Such a waste.

Karma-that’s what got them. When you treat people poorly you end up being fodder on message boards. I worked at the greene and would often run into the guys in their kitchen. They were great guys who i wish didn’t have to deal with finding a job right now, they are better than that. By the end there were only three guys in a full service/scratch kitchen. I hope they got paid and I hope they are moving on to better things. I agree with the place being bad,just place the blame on the right people.

The Greene really doesn’t cater to the Independent restaurant clientele. Those of us who really enjoy the independent scene are perfectly happy to avoid the over-crowded, homogenized environment that The Greene offers. Maybe they will put in a Chuck-E-Cheeze Pizza! It certainly would fit in.

My husband and I went there once. The food was okay, but the price is what bothered me the most. It was just way too expensive for what we ordered, and they didn’t even fix it according to the description on the menu. Elinor’s Amber Rose would do great there. They are independent and offer excellent eastern European food.

I agree with Dan Wright, A Dave and Busters would do great in the Dayton area. There is Nothing like that around here, where as Cincy and Columbus both have 2 (Dave and Busters and Gameworks)

It would be brainless for another restaurant to fill the void with the economy the way it is. Americans need to stop eating out as often as they do and start paying their bills. Even those who are current with their creditors can pay their balances down instead. Why pay $20 for a steak that would cost $5 at a decent grocery? At a rate of 400%, that equates to be more interest than most American’s are incurring monthly on their debt. Come on people… get with the program.

The Greene needs a gameroom for kids like Dave and Buster in Cincy. There is nothing for kids to do at the Greene but watch a movie.

I think a family style restaurant would be good. There are a lot of families that visit the Greene during the summer and the places now do not offer good options for kids. I am sure no one w/o kids would be in favor of such an idea. But they have plenty of restaurants appealing to the those dining w/o kids.

How about Montgomery Inn…they are a wonderful independent restaurant and it would be something different from steaks and hamburgers although they are available.

This restaurant did not close because there are not enough customers. That is an excuse. This place closed because management was immature and irresponsible. Staff & management were too cozy on a personal basis . Through bad management the staff was lazy, inattentive and uninformed. Customers waited too long or went unattended. While the ingredients were decent, the food was just O.K. Bottom line: Bad service, so-so food, too expensive for the mediocre experience. No restaurant succeeds tat way.

I would love to see a really good Cajun restaurant. I usually prefer independent restaurants, but a good chain would be Copeland’s. You can’t beat their shrimp etoufee, jambalaya, gumbo, and most of all, their andouille sausage with red beans and rice. But make sure to leave room for dessert - their bananas foster shortcake is to tie for!

Please - no more burger barns or steak houses! I love the idea of a Cajun restaurant. I would also like to see a restaurant that offers a variety of vegetarian and/or vegan dishes.

Try “AMERICAN” cuisine. That’s a start. There are a very small % of people who are willing to eat that stuff regularly. I would’nt want to “try” something for $30 a plate. Too risky.
You don’t see the burger and fries stores closing…..hmmmmmmm.

I never ate at Estilo but did eat at Cafe Istanbul several times. I love Mediterranean food, but the problems at Istanbul were several. The food was bland and often room-temperature. The sauces were weak or, more often, simply missing. The interior decoration was a nice start, but was stark and cold and needed to be softened up. And there was little customer education - customers new to that kind of cuisine need a little guidance about what traditional or typical Turkish dishes are.

the area would benefit from another casual, healthy-eating restaurant. There is a chain in Atlanta called Doc Green’s which serves delicious salads, sandwiches, etc. I would vote for Doc Green’s at the Greene.

Any New Orleans’-based restaurant would be great - and well-received. Emeril’s, K-Paul’s, Brennan’s, Houston’s, etc. Great food and great service works every time!

Estilo’s was mismanaged. It wasn’t the customer base. They were constantly out of dishes advertised on their menus; the food was mediocre at best; and the service was lackluster. I’m sorry to see an independent close, but I don’t think the management knew what they were doing. It’s sad. I hope another independent steps up to the plate.

My family ate there twice. I bought gift certificates that are now worthless. The food was so-so and the service was unacceptable. The first time we went we were offered pita bread with oil, the second time we were not. The wait staff always seemed to be preoccupied. I hate to say it, but I really did not think they were going to make it.

We really need a good Turkish restaurant that serves (sorry I don’t really know how to spell these): ekmek, cacik, humas, kebab, and tavas. Istanbul cafe came close but missed the mark enough that my Turkish food cravings were not satisfied. I would have tried this Mediterranean restaurant had I known about it. Also, I want to support the independent restaurants; for diversity sake.
