If you're looking for an entirely unscientific and highly opinionated take on local pizza, you've found it.
The taste team sampled pies from 12 pizza places in Dayton to find the best and worst. What we found was that everyone has differing opinions on what makes a great pizza. So check out our comments and judge for yourself.
Disclaimer: We had some delivered and picked some up ourselves, so temperature levels were far from consistent. We also didn't try any crazy topping combinations or plain cheese, although Tony lobbied for barbecue, beans and corn?
Taste: How's it taste? Ten is the best ever! One is I'd rather eat the cardboard box. |
Toppings: We judged the freshness of the ingredients as well as the quantity of toppings. We sampled whatever they called "deluxe" or "supreme" as well as pepperoni alone. |
Crust: We stuck with original crust and rated its taste and texture. Cassano's and Marion's original crusts are thin. |
Cheese: Arguably the most important part of a pizza. We compared the ratio of cheese to toppings, the taste, and even the "stretchiness" of the cheeses. |

As stated, “everyone has differing opinions on what makes a great pizza”, oh so true! I can’t agree more with ‘togaTapper’ - a classic message about the burgers, cracked me up! These pizza you reviewed are chains and truly don’t have great pizza, it’s more convenient VS. tasty. If you are from the northeast ‘Flying Pizza’ is the best I’ve tasted locally. I’m still looking for the best white pizza in town and I heard that ‘Palermo’s’ is pretty good (next on the list to try)!

Chris, What are you reading or are you reading at all? The winner was a LOCAL shop. The runner-up was a LOCAL shop. Half of the places profiled are LOCAL shops. Stop sniffing glue just for a moment and think about your comment.

I found that Oregon Express has some wonderful pizza and I am sad that it was not on your list. I am not a Dayton native and being able to find some good pizza has been my one of my tasks. I would definately recommend Oregon Express chicken pizza and Dewey’s. If you are south of town, Franklin’s PH Bistro has some pretty good pizza too!

Nice idea to rate pizza in Dayton. But why not support Dayton pizza chains. I’m pretty sure everyone already knows what Pizza Hut, Dominos, Papa Johns, etc. tastes like. If someone is visiting from another city or state, they want to try the local establishments and not something they can get in any other city in the country.

Troni’s is by far the best pizza in Dayton. The closest you can get to New York pizza! Do yourselves a favor and try it, you will be hooked!

Seriously…this is the list?
Missing are pie selections from (and all of these are better than most on the list in my opinion): Giovanni’s Troni’s Oregon Express Disalvo’s Deli Joe’s Pizza McGillicutty’s LaRosa’s
You all have enough time to try every terrible chain restaurant in the city, but not enough time to try some of the best pizza joints in Dayton? When we test burgers will you only be trying McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, Big Boy, Applebee’s, & Rally’s?

Giovanni’s definitely rates a try. Dewey’s is a favorite with me and my friends. They do a half and half that gives everyone what they want.

Next time, try Giovanni’s on Main Street in Fairborn. My favorite is with sausage, onions, and extra cheese.
