Fricker's serves up the best wings by far in the Dayton area.
Who serves up the best wings in the Miami Valley? The hottest, spiciest, juiciest, meatiest, most perfect?
The Leadbellies — four people who love to poke around mom-n-pops, bars, grills, county-fair midways, fast-food restaurants, diners, pizzerias and chili parlors in pursuit of the perfect low-cost, greasy delicacy that will fill them up right and hurt so good — sampled wings from 10 of the best wing spots in a taste test.
And here are their picks for the top five:
1. Fricker's
- Basics: Seven area locations
- Why it rates: The best by far. Hands down. Wings up. They've built a whole corporate identity around "World Famous Chicken Wings" and have made waaaaay too many naughty puns from derivations of the Frick portion of their name. But dang — these suckers were the best we ate. The Frickin' X-Scream sauce is so hot that they charge you an extra 59 cents for it, and trust us — it's deadly stuff. We liked the "nakedly" nonbreaded, and the mildly hot sauce best. And we wanted more and more and more. The Leadbelly Fave. 10 wings: $6.49. But you won't want just 10.

2. Hinders
- Basics: 902 W. Main St., Tipp City [Map]
Call (937) 667-4433 - Why it rates: This Tipp City sports bar was our runner-up for the top slot. Good stuff! The meatiest wings we had that night, with solid BBQ sauce that's neatly on the sweet side and good-quality all around. The wings we tried were just hot enough. Stay in the middle and you're safe. They call 'em "A Tipp City Tradition," and we see why. 10 wings: $6.25.

3. Quaker Steak & Lube
- Basics: 3725 Presidential Drive, Beavercreek [Map]
Call (937) 427-0500 - Why it rates: They make you sign a release form to try the Atomic Wings, and we aren't gonna go there. But we did like the upper-level heat we encountered with the habanero wings we tried, and noticed that the menu offers 19 (!!!) sauce flavors, all of which sound fab. Quaker Steak calls its wings "Jumbo" and has lots of inventive "V-8" combos of wings and other appetizers. You can get 'em in a bucket. Which might be what you have to be carried out in. Single order: $7.59.

4. BW3
- Basics: 14 area locations
- Why it rates: We've never understood what "BW3" means ... like, it's for Buffalo Wild Wings, but wouldn't that be "BW2"? Anyway, they know what they're doing here, and they know that's why you're there. You can even get baskets of 100 wings (25 chickens; think about it) for $49.99. They serve 'em traditional or boneless. They've got a special "sauce-spinning" method for coating 'em. And they're very good. Sweet, hot, shot through with unusual flavor and very good. They sell 14 sauces, btw. 12 wings: $6.99.

5. Bunkers
- Basics: 893 E. National Road, Vandalia [Map]
Call (937) 890-8899 - Why it rates: Bunkers was a place we hadn't heard of before, but we're definitely making a trip. The Vandalia eatery (est. 1995) was near the top of our rating for meatiest and hottest wings. Lots of flavors, including teriyaki, and "Matt's Homemade Specialty Sauces," of which we enjoyed the "Firecracker" and "Morning After." Well, two of us anyway. $6 per basket.
