The spacious Wine Gallery & Café offers an amazing array of 20 or so art-themed wine "flights" — three different wines that invite comparison.
The Miami Valley has gone from zero wine bars to a half-dozen or so in a few short years — a welcome development that, to borrow from our pal Ben Franklin, suggests some higher power loves us and wants us to be happy. Ranking them seems silly, since all do an admirable job of serving up fun and interesting wines (and some serve cocktails as well) in an inviting, un-fussy atmosphere. But here goes:
1. Cuvee Wine Bar & Cellar
- Basics: 4457 State Route 725, Bellbrook, OH [Map]
Call (937) 848-2161 or visit www.cuveewinebar.net - Why it rates: What separates Cuvee from the rest is the cooking expertise of Chris Cavender, former chef-owner of TW's in Miamisburg, and his co-owner and wife, Jessica Paringer. The special dinners and the small plates (usually served on Saturday) put the owners' culinary talents on full display. The wines are tilted toward small producers. No liquor is served, but great beers are available.

2. The Wine Gallery & Café
- Basics: 424 E. Third St., Dayton, OH 45402 [Map]
Call (937) 224-9463 - Why it rates: This spacious wine bar has improved its food menu and service greatly since it first opened, and offers an amazing array of 20 or so art-themed wine "flights" — three different wines that invite comparison. Be sure to check out the Wednesday night special wine tastings, in which a wine distributor offers samples of four or five wines, and owner Brian Linnean puts out some complementary eats. Cocktails and spirits are served.

3. Bella Vino
- Basics: 495 N. Main St., Springboro, OH [Map]
Call (937) 748-3807 or visit bellavinomerchants.com - Why it rates: This wine bar has gone through some ownership changes — it started as Mulligan's, then Grapes of Ruth — and is now in the capable hands of Dave and Jen Sauer and some partners. Dave, who has a restaurant and food service background, plans to expand the bar area and install kitchen equipment, so watch for the food offerings to greatly expand. A cozy and comfortable atmosphere. Serves cocktails.

4. Cork-n-Vine
- Basics: 1737 W. Main St., Troy, OH [Map]
Call (937) 332-9463 or visit cork-n-vine.com - Why it rates: The north valley has embraced this shop, to the extent that co-owners Shawn Grow and Angela Crespo are planning a second, even larger wine bar in the Miller Lane area in northern Montgomery County. Stay tuned for that, but first, stop in at Troy, and ask Shawn about the Brazilian cherry bar top — he did the work himself. Serves cocktails. Open seven days a week.

5. A Taste of Wine
- Basics: 90 S. Main St., Miamisburg, OH [Map]
Call (937) 247-1120 - Why it rates: The newest kid on the block, having opened in September 2007, this bright and spacious wine bar is owned by retired schoolteacher Bonnie Nolan and Kim Broomhall, technology coordinator at Fairmont High School. In warm weather, the patio is the place to be. No liquor served.

Okay, this place is really a restaurant, not a wine bar, but it does offer an astonishing 100 wines by the glass in its bar, and its Wednesday night wine tastings are a great value. Otherwise, prices are high.
