A shared love for The Foo Fighters and Led Zeppelin and the desire to start a band were the only ingredients necessary for drummer Nick Frye and guitarist David Miklos to bond back in 2000.
"We met on the bus in sixth grade," Frye said. "He was playing guitar for a little bit and I had been playing drums and we decided to jam and hang out."
"We had a common ground," Miklos said. "We both had been playing for a while and wanted to start a band and it was just the right time." They recruited Ryan Pitts (guitar, keyboard, vocals) and Kevin Sanders (bass, vocals) and worked in earnest under a variety of band names before settling on Bonneville. "We have good chemistry," Pitts said. "We're kind of like brothers so we all click together. We have the same sense of humor. Nothing big ever happens as far as fights or anything."
"None of us have brothers so we all kind of bonded together," Sanders said.
"Music is really what brings us together," Miklos said. "We all just love to play music so much and that's a really big thing to share with somebody."
While their classmates at Fairmont High School were focused on normal teen pursuits, these guys were focused on the music, which was evolving into a melodic mix of classic rock and contemporary alternative rock. The group's introduction to the professional bar scene was in the 2002 Dayton Band Playoffs at Canal Street Tavern, the summer before their freshman year at Fairmont.
"We made it to the third round that year," Miklos said. "We got beat by a punk cover band or something — I can't remember what they were called."
"We've played there a lot since then," Pitts said. "Mick (Montgomery) has asked us to come back on certain nights and we've scheduled shows there." The group's new CD, "In Stereo," is a testament to those years of hard work. The six-song EP is a short but sweet blast of mature and self-assured pop rock with an emphasis on unforgettable hooks, blistering guitar solos and stirring four-part harmonies. "Autumn Renegades" is a downbeat rumination on seasonal ennui and "To The Moon" is a jangly, mid-tempo look at times past, but most of the cuts are bouncy slices of upbeat rock that are long on melody and short on pretensions.
