My vote is for Flemings. My husband and I go there at least once a month. They are by far the best steakhouse in the Dayton area! Plus, we think Seth is great. He has always take care of us and our friends.

Are we talking quality of the product, or letting ATMOSPHERE skew the results? I’ve been to Carvers plenty of times- and as to the quality of steak, some great ones, and some that were lousy. After reading the comments, IMHO a lot of people have no clue what constitutes a really great steak. My credentials? I’m on a mission every time I visit a city to check out the best steakhouses. All the biggies in Ohio, plus Indy, SanFran, KC’s top 2, and others. Sorry, it’s the Pine Club, hands down.

If you are voting for best steak, then hands down Pine Club. The rest cannot compete. I think people don’t go to Pine Club because it is cash only. However, it is the best cash you will spend. I have been to Carvers several times, and I have never had a good steak. Flemings is a chain and should not be included. Pine Club is old school. The best kind of Old School!

By BB Kingly

I can understand why some people don’t like Pine Club’s atmosphere. The wait can be ridiculous and being cash only is a little bit of a pain. But there is absolutely NO WAY that any of these restaurants can claim to have a better steak. I’ve eaten at all of them except Buckhorn and Fleming’s. Anyone who says differently needs to have their taste buds revoked.

Is Fleming’s worth a try? I can only eat steak at the nicer places, Pine Club, Oakwood Club. Does it compare?

Not a fan of Carvers and the others should not be on the list. Pine Club, to me, is up there with the better steaks that I have ever had. Very comparable to Ruth Chris. Next on the list to try is Hyde Park in Columbus.

I kinda think Pondarosa should have been included. I like thier beef tips with ketchup.

Texas Roadhouse has the best steaks in all of Dayton! The prices are better and they hand cut all their steaks on premise. You can cut your steaks with a fork!

What about the new South American Steakhouse in old germantown…Truly, no comparison to most steakhouses…These guys from way south really know their beef. Panelo

I’m sorry…but the Buckhorn? Seriously? This isn’t exactly the type of place that should be in a poll with Carvers and Fleming’s. I think there should be more controls on the places in the polls next year as this is more of your blue collar experience than some of the other choices.

The Caroline in Troy is by far the best steak restaurant we have ever tried. We used to live in Cincy and would frequent the many high quality restaurants in the area, including those under the Jeff Ruby name. Without a doubt there is absolutely no comparison to The Caroline in Troy. We used to head back to Cincy whenever we could score a babysitter so we could have a nice night out with great food. Now, there is no longer a need to travel that far! Give it a try!

Pine Club has a pretty good porterhouse. But for filet….CARVERS is the only place I go to in Dayton. Their side sauces are out of this world (not that it even needs it) and you can even get a yummy slice of blue cheese on the top (my favorite!) I also highly recommend the romaine salad (I wish I could buy this dressing) and au gratin potatoes.

I like Carver’s, Buckhorn, And Hickory but it really is no competition. The best steak, when comparing filets using quality of meat and consistency, is the Oakwood Club. Not even a real contest if you are a true steak lover.

I love Carvers!!! The food, the atmosphere, the entertainment. When ever I’m in town I always go to Carvers and would never miss our special Holiday dinner prior to the showing of the Nutcracker each year!!! Sincerely, Michelle

Carver’s. Hands down. Great cuts, excellent wines, and professional service. Don’t get me wrong, each of the places listed has great food and most have reasonable prices. We just know that we’ll get the best of everything if we go to Carvers.

I don’t understand why Old Hickory on Brown Street isn’t on this list. They have by far the best steaks, chicken, hamburgers and ribs around. We go there at least 3-4 times a month and we have never had a bad meal.

I am from Cincinnati where we have a TON of great steak restaurants… now that I live in Dayton and have had Carvers I am recruiting my Cincinnati family and friends to commute to Dayton for great steak, great service, great wince, and a great atmosphere. In my opinion Carvers is the best steak restaurant in the area!!! :)

We have tried every restaurant on the list. Hands down, we prefer Carvers. We eat at Carvers on everyone of our Anniversaries and several other times during the year. Anyone thinking they don’t have a great menu selection, must not be able to read.

When my husband and I want steak, we always head to Carver’s. In addition to their fabulous steaks, chops and seafood, they have some of the best sides in town. You can’t go wrong with the au gratin potatoes or the asparagus. And their spinach salad is wonderful. If you happen to be there on a night when they are featuring their smoked salmon appetizer, by all means, indulge. Wow! I must admit, I do miss their Oysters Rockefeller. If they’d bring that back, I’d be in heaven.

Really good choices on the list… My vote goes to Carvers for the overall best… I think Flemming’s may have them beat in steak alone but price makes it too high for many, if you want to spend some extra for something special go there… J Alexanders is fantastic, some of the best service in town but if you want steak, cross the street and go to Carvers.

By Edward

April 4, 2009 12:57 PM | Link to this

No question, Carvers. For the overall dining experience they cannot be beat in Dayton. Extensive menu, food prepared to perfection, friendly and attentive wait staff, reasonable prices for the value delivered, live jazz music and maybe best of all, they take reservations. Try to make a reservation at the Pine Club, Oakwood Club, or Paragon.

We love and recommend Carvers. The menu has wonderful choices, and we have never been disappointed. Also one of the very few good restaurants with music. The staff is very professional and welcoming.

Have been to most of the listed restaurants - all good and worth a return trip. But for the steak PLUS the overall dining experience (service, atmosphere, sides, wine list, etc.), I would choose Carver’s every time.

Can’t beat the food or the atmosphere. Have a great dinner then go to the bar for a drink and to listen to the Jazz band, can’t find many places like that around Dayton. Lobster is out of this world. Even if you don’t want dinner it’s a great place to get together with friends and have drinks and listen to great music. Carvers all the way!!!!! Hollie & George Miamisburg, ohio

Carvers is by far one of our favorites. We do appreciate Oakwood Club & The Paragon but chose Carvers everytime. The menu selection is great, the spinach salad is wonderful & their prime rib & ny strip are the best anywhere. Good luck Carvers!!

We drive from northern Shelby County to eat at Fleming’s, the food and the service is that good. We have eaten at many of the other steak houses in the poll, and Fleming’s is by far the best. If you haven’t eaten at Fleming’s, try it, you will have a new favorite!

Been to about all of them except the newby’s in town. Would rather go in for a good steak at Old Hickory. Best House dressing in town. I have had a few tough steaks at Paragon. Pine Club seems to never cook it right. If Grub Steak was that good it wouldn’t have moved & people would be coming to them. J.Alexander’s is good but just below the mark. Carver’s has a terrible menu. They need more choices. The Barnsider is a rip off on prices. Better parking since they leveled the Westward Ho.

Fleming’s gives an overwheliming feeling of welcome ! Have the filet for a tender melt in your mouth steak, compliment it with homemade mashed potatoes and a Fleming’s salad…. CHocolate lava cake for desert ? wines are in abundance and service that is so individualized or so it feels… they even remember your name and what you enjoy the best… I love Fleming’s !!! try it… you’ll like it.

I’ve had great steaks at top restaurants all over the country from Chicago to San Diego. I still believe that Pine club is among the top for steak quality and preparation. If you can get past the less than desireable atmosphere and average sides, you’re in for a real treat!

Fleming’s is by far the best steakhouse in town! The steaks are always wonderful and full of flavor and the Fleming’s Potatoes are outstanding! Top it off with a banana’s foster matini and you have what I would want for my last meal! WAY TO GO FLEMING’S!

I live in Miami county and have eaten in most of the finer restaunts in the Dayton area and have traveled across the country and a bit abroad. I was very glad to see The Caroline come to Troy. My wife and I came to Dayton every weekend to experience fine dining. Now we can go to The Caroline in Troy The wait staff and two bartenders are clearly the best. You will see for your self if you come to visit The Caroline. It is apparent they are well trained.

I realize less than 500 votes have come in so far, but with every restaurant between 10-12% it sounds like you can’t go wrong with any of them. The final standings will most likely come down to personal preference. I’ve only been to Paragon and J. Alexander’s and they were both excellent, and have heard great things about several others.

Oakwood Club has the best NY strip anywhere in the country in my opinion. Had great steaks around the country but the Oakwood Club is best. I live in Minneapolis and we have four high-end steak houses but the Oakwood Club beats all of them.

There are so many good - no, great - steak restaurants in the area. Based on your listing, I voted for Carver’s. I truly enjoy my dining experiences at Carver’s. I too was surprised that Chop House is not on the list - they have great steaks too! As for Texas Roadhouse… some people are able only to experience the chain steak houses. If that’s is your point of reference, then you are going to believe that it’s the best around.
