"Back to the '80s," an area premiere, opens Friday, Nov. 6, for three weekends in Kettering. The retro show is an account of 1989 high school senior class, as recalled by a man in his 30s. Unrequited love, popularity (and its opposite), a debate about CDs replacing cassette tapes, student elections, a stolen speech, new kids in school and an English teacher in a magazine centerfold are among the plot lines. There are 20 songs, including "Footloose," "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "You Give Love a Bad Name." Like, totally awesome! » More

First of all, everyone slow down. Obviously there are some weird things going on with the voting, but bashing the competition…NOT COOL. My vote, the Dublin Pub. Great beer selection, wonderful atmosphere, amazing food, and a variety of live entertainment. We have to remember that most of these places are independently owned, and need our support, not our criticism. Lighten up!!!

Any bar without Guiness is disqualified for my vote. Dublin Pub has the best Guiness Draft in town. However, the BEST overall beer bar is not listed. Frickers on Woodman Drive has a great Guiness system and the girls there, not scantily clad like Hooters, are soooo nice and personable and the service is FIVE STAR! It is a tie for service and sooo nice girls when Trish is working at Dublin Pub.

I am actually glad that my favorite beer bar is not on this list! With all the suspicious activity that happens with all of the poles on ActiveDayton, I wouldn’t want them to be subjected to such immature behavior! Another reason, I don’t want word to get out and have the place ruined with the pretentious clientele that I have seen at other places. I like them being a small hole in the wall full of regulars!

This voting “best of Dayton” contest is a Joke and a fraud. My company , Stafford Jewelers, was part of last weeks “best Jeweler” contest. Much to our surprise and disapointment, one of the Jewelers dumped in 1700 votes on Sunday night (the last night of the contest over a 2 hour period) to take the Best of Dayton title away from us. When I contacted Ms. Fong at the Dayton Daily I was advised that they would look in to it. Well they did and here is her responce: Hi Mr. Stafford, I just tried to call you and was unable to get a voicemail recording, so I wanted to get back with you in some form. We’ve had our tech team look into the Best of Dayton voting, and we did notice something suspect happening at approximately 6 p.m. Sunday. However, we cannot conclude with certainty that this was a case of automated voting, which violates our rules, of course. The votes were coming from multiple sources). But still the volume of activity at that time was definitely not normal. I have consulted with Mike Goheen, the online director for Cox Ohio Publishing, and we believe the best way to move forward is to nullify this vote and have another vote in this same category later this year. We will be eliminating the category Best View and placing Best Jewelry Store up for vote again Sept. 8-14 (that is Labor Day week, so voting will run from Tuesday through the following Monday). Thank you for raising concerns. I would be happy to discuss this with you in more detail if you’d like. I will be bouncing in and out of some meetings this afternoon, but if I miss your call I will get back with you as soon as I can. Michelle Fong Editor, ActiveDayton.com Cox Ohio Publishing Media Center 1611 S. Main St. Dayton, OH 45409 Office: (937) 225-2271 e-mail: mfong@coxohio.com www.ActiveDayton.com All of our “get out the vote” was wasted effort. Ms. Fong decision not to follow the rules or the spirit of the contest only shows that if your a Dayton Daily advertising client and you get caught cheating, you will get a “free pass” /do over in the contest. My company will not ever be a part of this contest again and would urge everyone to rethink this “best of Dayton” contest. John M. Stafford Founder Stafford Jewelers

I’m confused how bars without any taps would be considered? When the title of the poll is BEER BAR, it seems obvious to me that we are raking bars that focus on the BEER! How Dublin Pub is dominating this completely baffles me! As Bill from SP tavern pointed out, this poll is obviously a sham. Only one vote per IP address should be permitted!

Judging by the comments it looks like good beer is becoming more and more popular. It’s really nice to have to worry about which one of the above establishments is the best. Judging by the descriptions there are many I’d like to go to. Dogfishhead 90 on tap - wooo hoooo! My local favorite is Boston’s. Kind of weird but always a rolling selection of good things, and the most Arrogant bar in the country. Support your local good beer bar. Now if we can get back a real brewpub. ……..

I have misgivings about this being a fair vote given the numbers posted. I also wonder about the definition of a beer bar. While the Dublin Pub has good beer and excellent entertainment ( we’re going there tonight) there is really no change-up in the taps or efforts to sponsor craft brews or beer education. Likewise, Chappy’s (there Wednesday night) has great over the top Belgian’s and excessively hopped craft brews, the atmosphere is sports bar ala BW3. So, what is the definition of “Best”?

Boston’s for sure, but I think the King’s Table should be added to this list! Their selection is incredible!

We take reader nominations for each poll, but nominations close when the poll is activated. So in this category, we stopped taking nominations at noon on Monday, the 16th. A category is officially up for nomination the week before the poll begins. But new this year, we are accepting nominations for all Best of Dayton categories for the rest of 2009 anytime. There are more bar categories coming up this year, so send us your picks by clicking on the Best of Dayton tab, then nominations.

The Dublin Pub. My wife and I stopped in one evening for a cold draught and were delighted to hear an outstanding band, I believe they were called 9-Castle Close. Fantastic sound that made the night more enjoyable. Prost! Cheers! Slainte!

ActiveDayton and the Dayton Daily News seem to be unable to run a credible “Best of” contest anymore. Last year the Best Rock Band got 51,937 votes!?? And the results stand. As Mr. Stafford pointed out, the same thing is happening again this year. This contest has lost all credibility and has become meaningless. Take us out if you can’t run a credible contest. I urge all other owners- Dave B, Tank, Tom, Jimmy, Dave C., etc- to opt out as well. AD and DDN, go back to mailed in paper ballots.

South Park had 3 votes at 7 pm on Thursday and over 300 at 10 pm. J-Alans added 50 in the next hour. Last year in this category Chappy’s and Peaches each racked up over 2,000 votes, where the third runner up only scored 22.
Maybe activedayton.com should forget about best beer bar and give out an award for Biggest Cheater In Dayton.

I have an issue with Peaches even being included on the Best of “Dayton” list. While some of the other nominated bars are not technically within the city limits, they are in the suburbs of Dayton. Yellow Springs is completely out of the area. Change the name to “Best of Within a Thirty Mile Radius of Dayton”, or drop Peaches. The real Dayton area has some great beer bars. We should give them the recognition they deserve.

I agree with John Stafford’s comments regarding the web voting. It happened in this category last year. It is somewhat of a misnomer to ask for the “Best Beer Bar” and not quantify it with based on selection or number of taps or quality. I am sure that 5 yrs ago you could have gotten away with having Guinness on tap and calling yourself a beer bar.
