  • The Deal: Considered the premiere sports bar in Columbus, where no sporting event on the planet is overlooked.
  • The Big Pro: A television in every booth and a gaming area in the back that includes an enormous pool room.

Al Rosa Villa

  • The Deal: A loud haven for metalheads of all schools, featuring local and national acts.
  • The Big Pro: Every acclaimed mid-sized or once-huge-but-experiencing-a-down-cycle metal band in the last 25 years that comes through Columbus tends to stop at Alrosa.
  • The Big Con: The most truly obnoxious Web site on the planet, and they appeared to have booked Winger for February.

Winking Lizard Tavern

  • The Deal: With over one hundred beers, it wasn't difficult for the Winking Lizard to win an Audience Award for the best selection. Their martinis are lauded in some quarters as well. There is also a location on Bethel Rd. (614-451-2647).
  • The Big Pro: Truly ambitious patrons can embark on the World Tour of Beers, where they have one year to sample 100 beers. Winners receive a jacket and an invitation to the World Tour Party.
  • The Big Con: We're afraid the bar's name is meant to be taken literally. Keep your eyes peeled on the way to the bathroom.

Grandview Café

  • The Deal: An all-purpose establishment where you can grab a bite below and then have a drink and enjoy the live music above.
  • The Big Pro: The food is consistently rated as excellent and is considered an excellent place for singles to mingle.
  • The Big Con: Trying to dance with a Flat Iron Steak cannonballed inside your stomach.

Frog Bear & Wild Boar

  • The Deal: Pretty much every aspect of this bar is nearly universally praised. The live music, DJs and sound system, service, and the overall crowd mix and social vibe all get high marks.
  • The Big Pro: The name.

Byrne's Pub

  • The Deal: One of the city's most renowned Irish pubs is also its most authentic. Known for its comradely atmosphere and as a great place to meet people.
  • The Big Pro: A well-poured Guinness and Celtic music on the weekends.
  • The Big Con: Dartboard space is limited, but that's no reason to come to blows.

Thurman Café

  • Basics: 183 Thurman Ave., Columbus, OH 43206 [Map]

  • The Deal: An audience winner for best after-work bar, an ideal place for quality, cheap eats and atmosphere before you move on to the main event of your evening.
  • The Big Pro: The Thurman burger. Evidently, it requires two hands and, as one reviewer, "has everything but the kitchen sink on it."
  • The Big Con: Apparently, this is the place where grown adults go to regress to infancy, complete with grease-smeared chin afterward. Some people have also reported being too bloated to move for about a month.

Club 185

  • The Deal: Fetching décor tends to lure an attractive, professional crowd. Lots of memorabilia on the walls and couches and chairs grouped in the front contribute to the "Cheers"-like feel.
  • The Big Pro: The drinks are nice and stiff and the layout is ideal for relaxed socializing.
  • The Big Con: Some of the jukebox selections are listed as "questionable."

BoMA - The Bar of Modern Art

  • The Deal: Seven bars, two dance floors, rooms for private parties of all sizes, a fine dining restaurant, and an art gallery. This is, and the term is doubly appropriate given the building's original use, the megachurch of partying.
  • The Big Pro: With its enormous, square dance floors and balcony above, transplanted Manhattanites can feel, for a few hours, like they've left home.
  • The Big Con: You stand a good chance of running into either angry artist wannabes who accuse you of selling out or insecure, snobby elitists who decry the club while spouting their alleged big-city credentials at every opportunity.

The Thirsty Ear Tavern

  • Basics: 1200 W. 3rd Ave. Columbus, OH 43212 [Map]

  • The Deal: The Thirsty Ear houses several rooms for dining, 99 brands of beer including 19 microbrews, and live music ranging from country to rock to blues.
  • The Big Pro: A chummy neighborhood pub by day and a juke joint by night, the shifting identities accommodate every mood.
  • The Big Con: The venue's smallness makes things a bit cramped when bands play, so that special sect of individuals that like to mosh to the blues will have to travel elsewhere.

Femme Fatale Fitness of Centerville has come up with an attention-getting way to promote food donation. The studio, which offers classes in pole dance, burlesque and "tease-yoga," will present its first playfully named "Cans for Cans" benefit performance at 8:30 p.m. today, Nov. 20, at Brixx Ice Co., 500 E. First St. Admission is five canned or otherwise non-perishable food items, but vouchers benefiting the food bank can also be purchased at the restaurant and bar. The evening will include pole dance, burlesque, live music, darts, cornhole, classic cars, pin-up photo opportunities, makeup and hair demonstrations. More »
