Deadline approaching for Houston wine competition

Readers with a keen memory may recall that I’ve served as a judge at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition for the last few years (I made quite a splash the first year I judged back in 2006 — see the Uncorked post entitled An Ohioan ventures into the heart of Texas — and why they’re still laughing at my expense).

Well, the deadline for wineries to submit their wines for the 2012 competition is fast approaching. Check out the wine competition handbook and the online entry page for details. Note that the wines submitted must be currently distributed in Texas and have a designated, licensed Texas distributor.

The entry deadline is Oct. 31, and the judging itself will take place Nov. 12-13 in Houston. The livestock show and rodeo show itself — as big of a deal as a big deal gets in Texas — will take place Feb. 28-March 18.

Winners of this wine competition are awarded trophy buckles (highly coveted by grape farmers and wineries) in more than 50 classifications, as well as fine leather saddles and chaps to the top award winners, in the categories of Grand Champion Best of Show, Reserve Champion Best of Show, Top All Around Winery, Top Wine Company, Top Red, Top White, Top Sparkling, Top Dessert, Top Value, Top Texas Wine and Top Country Award.

Check out this piece on last year’s results.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity that supports education through scholarships and other programs, and facilitates better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentations. Since its beginning in 1932, the show has committed more than $265 million for Texas youths.
