Obscure varietals take center stage in Dayton-area wine tastings
Falanghina, Vermentino, Carmenere, Gruner Veltliner, Verdejo, Tempranillo, Malvasia, Lagrein, Dornfelder, Torrontes, Pinotage — household-name grape varietals, right? But if you live here in the Dayton area, the wine epicenter of the world, YOU would have the chance to sample each of those varietals just in the space of a few days. Heck, the Bella Vino tasting alone on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday features five of these little-known grapes at one venue. Is this a great wine community or what?
Dennis Hall thinks so. On our Facebook page, Dennis had this to say after attending a Jay’s wine-shop tasting led by Allister Ashmeade, the owner and winemaker of Elderton winery in Australia: “Allister’s itinerary included stops in LA, NY, Dayton, London & Hong Kong in the next week. Dayton must be one of the great wine capitols!”
