Jay’s wine dinner has guest chef whom you probably know
Jay’s Restaurant has arranged for a guest chef to prepare the menu (newly released — see below) for its German wine dinner at 7 p.m. Monday, March 1, featuring the wines of Max Ferd. Richter.
The guest chef is Chris Cavender, the owner of Cuvee Wine Bar in Bellbrook and former co-owner of TW’s Restaurant in Miamisburg back in the 1990s. Cavender has served several of his dishes at wine tastings and events at Cuvee.
The German wine estate’s owner, Dr. Dirk Max Ferd. Richter, will be on hand. The cost of the March 1 German wine dinner is $55, which includes tax and tip. Reservations are required; for information or to make reservations, call (937) 222-2892.

Italian wine garden to highlight Alter Fish Fry
Members of the Alter Booster Association will be upping the ante at this year’s “Knight Out” fish fry from 7 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Feb. 26th by adding an upscale Italian wine garden to their event to be held at the high school, 940 E. David Road.
While the main gymnasium and cafeteria at Alter High School will be the primary center of activity for food and casino games, the auxiliary gym will house the wine garden, as well as an area for desserts and coffee and the event’s silent auction. Eight wines will be offered for sampling at a cost of $3 to $5. The $3 pours include Canyon Road pinot grigio, merlot and white zinfandel; $4 pours include Alma chardonnay, Barefoot Cellars moscato and Mirassou pinot noir; and $5 pours include Don Miguel Malbec and Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon.
Admission to the event is $15 at the door, and the event’s proceeds benefit Alter High School. Attendees must be 21 or older. For more information, contact booster association member Brian Short at (937) 271-5035.

Jay’s dinners among highlights in a hoppin’ week of wine events
There are weeks, and then there are weeks.
Take, for example, Jay’s Restaurant, which has three big events in five days, starting Thursday, Feb. 25, with a New Holland Beer Dinner, followed two days later on Saturday, Feb. 27 by its 34th Anniversary Bordeaux Wine Luncheon, followed two days later on Monday, March 1, by a special German wine dinner featuring the wines of Weingut Max Ferd. Richter. The estate’s owner, Dr. Dirk Max Ferd. Richter, will be on hand.
Carumba! And that doesn’t even take into consideration all of the great tastings on tap for THIS weekend.
Once again, the wine tastings and events list you see here is compiled with love and care by a Dayton-based wine listserv that shared it with Uncorked, and for that we are, indeed, grateful.

Drumroll please: The next ‘It’ wine destination IS …
Did you wake up this morning wondering just what the next “It” wine destination will be?
I just know you did. Otherwise, why would I receive a news release about it?
Now, the folks who sent out the press release identifying the next “It” wine region may have a wee bit of a vested interest, but hey, that doesn’t mean they’re not right, right?
I’ll let you decide. The release comes from the Turkish Culture & Tourism office, and it’s headlined “Travelers to Turkey: Discover the ‘Juice’ of Turkey’s Luscious Wine Regions/Wine-Focused Packages Available Exploring a Country Primed to Be the Next “It” Wine Destination”
Gotta admit, it DOES sound intriguing. And I enjoyed the first two Turkish wines I’ve tasted, the Kavaklidere Select White and the Kavaklidere Select Red, sampled a year ago as part of my restaurant review of Pasha Grille at The Greene in Beavercreek.
Anyone else tried any Turkish wines?
Anybody else up for a road trip?

Valentine’s wine tastings (and Spanish wine dinners) to melt the heart
What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than exploring the romance-filled world of wine? Gaze lovingly at this list of wine tastings, dinners and events created by Dayton-area wine retailers and restaurants via the Herculean compilation efforts of a Dayton-based wine listserv. The opportunities for Valentine’s pleasure are limitless.
Speaking of pleasure, Saturday’s Arrow Far Hills tasting promises plenty of Australian beauties (see below), and in addition, here’s some additional information on two — count em, two — Spanish wine dinners on the docket for next week. And they’re not on the same night, meaning that you could — I’m just sayin’ — sign up for both. Do we live in a great world or what?
El Meson, 903 E. Dixie Drive in West Carrollton, will host a Spanish wine dinner at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, that will feature five wines from different regions (and different grapes) of Spain, each paired with a tapas course. The cost is $65, not including tax or tip, and reservations are required. For more information, call (937) 859-8229.
On Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m., McCormick & Schmick’s at 4429 Cedar Park Drive in The Greene in Beavercreek will host a five-course Spanish wine dinner. The menu will include Squash Blossoms Stuffed with Iberico Ham; Shrimp Escabeche with Blood Orange Mojo; Paella Valencia; Churrasco with Chimichurri Sauce; and Calanda Peaches with Meringue. The cost is $60, not including tax or tip, and reservations are required. For more information, call Melissa Camp at (937) 431-9765.
Click on “continue reading” if the full tastings list does not appear directly below, and cheers!

Wine to accompany a winter wonderland
Isn’t it wonderful that we have the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of Ohio weather? Don’t you feel sorry for those deprived Florida snowbirds who miss out on that opportunity?
We can celebrate diversity in wine as well, as you’re about to see in this amazing list of tastings, dinners and other events compiled by a generous and hard-working Dayton-based listserv. THEY haven’t flown the coop either.
So strap on your snow boots and enjoy!

When is a pinot noir not really a pinot noir? French prosecutor thinks he knows
Check out this story from Decanter.com entitled “Charges brought in Pinot Noir-Red Bicyclette scandal”.
I know, I know, this type of thing has been going on for years, etc. etc. Maybe I’m naive, but I still find this stunning, particularly the scope of the allegations. Thirteen defendants? And a small lake of wine that was passed off as pinot when it was, in fact, something else?
I just wonder whether there was perhaps just a hint of, “Oh, we’ll just sell it to the Americans — they’ll never be able to tell the difference anyway” attitude at work here. Ya THINK??
Have you had any unusually dark-colored, full-bodied, relatively inexpensive “pinot noir” lately?
