Wines to ring in the New Year and beyond
I just KNOW I’m going to have trouble remembering to write “2010” on checks and other documents starting tomorrow, but perhaps a taste or two of fermented juice of the grape will sharpen my mind to the change. Say “good riddance” to 2009 with this sparkling list of wine tastings, dinners and special events, which comes to Uncorked via the considerable efforts of a Dayton-based wine listserv which compiles it. Ohio, feds will help pay for new vineyards
The Ohio Grape Industries Committee will help Ohio wineries expand their vineyards starting next spring.
The “Vineyard Expansion Assistance Program” is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Block Grant program, and is part of a goal of increasing grape acreage by 10 percent (220 acres) over the next five years in the Buckeye state.
The program caught the attention of Wines & Vines (www.winesandvines.com), which published a piece entitled “Ohio invests in winegrapes”.
I’m all for having more vineyards in Ohio, but I never would have suspected that vineyard expansion would be subsidized by tax dollars. Still, if my tax dollars have to be used for something …

One week before Christmas, which wines to taste?
What to give as a holiday gift, or serve on Christmas Day, or drink on New Year’s Eve? Take the guesswork out of your wine shopping by tasting the wines first, starting tonight, or especially tomorrow (Saturday), extending into next week. Pore through this wine-tastings list that is positively glistening with hidden gems, and your holiday shopping needs will soon resolve themselves.
Careful, though — some wine retailers that have weekly tastings the rest of the year cancel their tastings this time of year. (Sigh) I’m sure there are valid reasons for doing so, but it still does feel like a kick in the teeth, doesn’t it?

New ‘chocolate wine’ flying off store shelves
The one product that is flying off of wine-shop shelves faster than any other this December looks more like a milkshake than a wine.
That’s because it is a milkshake of sorts — an adult version.
Europa ChocoVine ($9.99) from Holland blends “the taste of Dutch chocolate and fine red wine” (actually, “fine French cabernet,” according to the Chocovine web site. Denny Freyvogel of Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Centerville-area store and Traci Ryan from the Englewood Kroger store said the relatively new product is selling briskly.
Ryan said some of her customers refer to ChocoVine as “Bailey’s Light,” as in a less-alcoholic version of Bailey’s Irish Cream. It’s listed at 14 percent alcohol, and consists of “grape wine with artificial flavor, cream and artificial colors.”
The taste is quite sweet, with a bit of maraschino cherry peeking through the creamy chocolate.
The back label warns against mixing ChocoVine with acidic drinks. Ryan explained why: “It curdles.”

Pabst makes a blue-ribbon comeback
Am I reading this right?
Check out this CNNMONEY.com story that says Pabst Blue Ribbon is making a comeback in the beer market, in part by positioning itself as a “hipster, offbeat beer” and an alternative to the beers brewed by behemoths.
Back in the day — okay, back in MY day — PBR was the exact antithesis of a “hipster, offbeat” beer.
Behold once again the power of marketing, with perhaps a bit of old-fashioned serendipity thrown in for good measure.

Wine tastings and events — special midweek edition
Hey, um, is there a holiday or sumthin’ coming up?
Special wine tastings abound, and the tireless Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles our Friday events listings has taken notice of the need to let folks know of a slew of mid-week events, available via a mere click of the “continue reading” link below. Note that DLM Washington Square’s new wine bar is open and planning some “extra” tastings this week and later in December to make up for some of the tastings they missed while under construction.
Also, there’s this late addition: The Winds’ in Yellow Springs is hosting its Champagne & Sparkling Wine Tasting this Saturday, December 5, at 3:00 pm. On the tasting menu are grower Champagnes as well as other affordable sparkling wines from around the world, and the Winds will pair the sparklers with a variety of dishes. Cost is $50. For information and reservations call 937-767-9441.
