Dayton’s finest wine-and-beer tastings and events list, free for the perusing
Week in and week out, this list is simply breathtaking, and this week’s is no exception. Our collective thanks to the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles this collection of wine and beer tastings, dinners, fundraisers and other events, then graciously shares it with Uncorked. Yes, these events make for fine reading — but even better attending. Check out the French winemakers pouring their wines at DLM Springboro tonight (Friday, 10-30), and the Italian winemaker pouring Saturday afternoon at DLM Oakwood (these people traveled halfway around the world just to pour for us!), or the upcoming beer dinner at Jay’s — something a bit out of the ordinary.
But don’t overlook the very different, special-themed tastings this weekend at Little Sonoma and Jungle Jim’s — unlike any I can ever recall seeing in the many years of these wine lists. Great ideas!
Click on “continue reading” if the list doesn’t appear directly below … Cheers!

Dave Schmerr’s father, Lester, served in World War II in the European Theatre under General George Patton. The tasting follow his 80th Infantry Division as they fought their way through France. Dave will taste the wines of different appellations as his father adds his experience of being on the front line in some of the heaviest fighting that occurred in France, culminating in his being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne. Got wine tastings? Check!
Wine tastings, wine dinners, wine-themed fund-raising events, beer tastings, beer dinners — we’ve got ‘em all, thanks to the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles the following list and shares with Uncorked and its members. For that, we thank our lucky stars. And for the tastings themselves, we thank our lucky stars a second time.

New wine lounge hits a bump in the road
The “Grapes — a Wine Lounge” that we told you about Thursday (and in this morning’s Dayton Daily News Life section) has encountered a bit of a snag.
The lounge had opened inside the Centerville Pub at 68 West Franklin St., in a loft area that previously was used mostly for storage. But Centerville city officials apparently noted that the building’s occupancy paperwork did not call for that portion of the building to be used to seat customers, so the wine lounge can’t seat guests there until the occupancy paperwork issue is resolved, Grapes co-manager Gayle Burtt said this afternoon, Oct. 16.
In the meantime, however, the sports bar will set aside some tables and will still serve the wines and appetizers that are on the wine lounge’s menu, and customers can peek into what will, hopefully soon, become the Grapes wine lounge, Burtt said.

New wine lounge opens inside Centerville sports bar
Fellow wine enthusiasts, I’d say our little secret is out, isn’t it? Because the explosion of wine bars is showing no signs of slowing down. On the contrary
Here’s a brand new one to add to the story I wrote in last Sunday’s DDN business section about the growing wine-bar trend: “Grapes — a Wine Lounge” has opened INSIDE the Centerville Pub at 68 West Franklin St.
Yes, a wine lounge inside a sports bar.
“It’s the best of both worlds — a good marriage,” said Gayle Burtt of Washington Twp., who manages the wine lounge with Mark Brown.
Burtt, who is the organizers of a Wine Lovers in Dayton group on MeetUp.com, has had her eye on an upstairs loft in the Centerville Pub for some time.
“It was a space that was unused, except for storage,” Burtt said. “I approached the pub’s owners and essentially asked to sub-lease it.”
Now, the pub’s loft has been renovated, and Burtt says she believes the region’s wine enthusiasts will embrace what she described as a “wine lounge with a warm, cozy atmosphere, with comfortable leather chairs and love seats in a living room-type setting.” And unlike several other Dayton-area wine bars, Grapes — A Wine Lounge does not do double duty as a retail wine shop, she said.
The new wine lounge offers weekly wine tastings on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. — which also happens to be prime NFL football-watching time. Burtt has already spoken with couples who like the idea of going to the Centerville Pub together, but watching games from separate venues inside — with some spouses settling in on the main floor, with its full bar, darts, video bowling and patio, and others seeking out the cozier wine lounge, where wine is the only alcohol served.
The Grapes wine lounge seats 25 to 30 people. It serves a variety of wines by the glass or bottle (the wine list is available on the Grapes — a Wine Lounge web site, and it serves light food including cheese-and-meat plates, smoked salmon “martinis,” and tortilla pizzas.
The wine lounge’s hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. For more information, call (937) 238-5706.

Fall in love with wine this weekend
Somewhere on this list is a wine you could fall in love with.
I mean, seriously in love with.
Will it be the Muller-Thurgau at Bruning’s? The Barolo at Jay’s? The Pinot Noir at DLM Springboro?
Mmmm. Romancing the wine.
The following list of Dayton-area wine tastings and events comes to Uncorked via a hard-working Dayton-based wine listserv.
And you gotta love that.
Note: No tastings at Dorothy Lane Market Washington Square this weekend! Renovations are still in full swing.

Big changes on tap for Springboro wine bar
SPRINGBORO — Bella Vino, the wine and spirits bar at 495 N. Main St. (Ohio 741), has a new manager and new plans for the future.
John C. Feltz, who previously managed the wine department at the Trader Joe’s store in Kettering, is now the “location manager and wine enthusiast” at Bella Vino, the wine bar’s partners announced in a news release.
Former Bella Vino manager David Sauer, who had very much been the public face of Bella Vino, said his last night was Saturday, Oct. 3.
“The partners wanted to go in a different direction, so I decided to move on,” said Sauer, who now works for Heartland Payment Systems. “I still have a small ownership in (Bella Vino), but no other involvement … . I hope things move in the right direction.”
Feltz, a Fairborn native and 1984 graduate of Carroll High School, holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Dayton. He spent part of his youth working in his family’s vineyard in West Milton. Heritage Vineyard ceased production by the mid-1990s, in part because Ohio’s cold winters wreaked havoc on its grapevines.
Feltz was busy in the wine bar this week taking inventory and making plans for Bella Vino’s future.
“We’re going to make this a destination for wine lovers” in the region, Feltz said.
Bella Vino will expand its tasting program so that there is a wine tasting every day at least for some part of the day, Feltz said. And he will look to expand the number of wine classes and special events.
Bella Vino is also taking steps to more fully utilize social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook to connect with the community and customers, Feltz said. “This is going to be a 21st Century wine bar,” he said.
The wine bar will offer a variety of hot and cold appetizers, Feltz said.
A news release also promises “by-reservation tastings with truly special wines and in-depth presentations on winemaking, food pairing, and wine tasting,” as well as new cocktails and spirits tastings. The wine bar has a full liquor license that allows it to serve spirits as well as wine.
Bella Vino is owned by Craig Coy, Kevyn Coy, Dave Girouard, Charles Walsh and Sauer. It opened as Mulligan’s wine shop and was Grapes of Ruth wine bar from 2003 to 2007, when it was purchased by its current owners.

Winemakers on both sides of the Atlantic sing praises of ‘09 vintage
The 2009 vintage is being hailed enthusiastically by winemakers on at least two continents.
First it was Beaujolais wine producer Georges Duboeuf, who is described in a news release as “ecstatic about this year’s Beaujolais harvest, predicting it one of the best Beaujolais vintages in the last 50 years.”
(Bill Deutsch, Chairman of Georges Duboeuf’s exclusive U.S. importer, W.J. Deutsch & Sons Ltd., is quoted in the news release as saying of the nouveau that is about to be released next month, “We anticipate retail prices to be lower than last year, averaging $9 to $11 per bottle.” Wonder what the Ohio retail will be?)
And in California, winemakers range from pleased to positively ecstatic about the quality of the fruit they’re harvesting from their vineyards, according to this piece from Jon Bonne for the San Francisco Chronicle.
The story describes a wine market in which high-quality wines may coincide with reasonable, if not slightly depressed, prices. Which would leave this wine drinker anything BUT depressed … .
