August 2009

Yet again, the wine will flow

Once again, wonderful wine will flow from perfectly chilled bottles throughout the Miami Valley this weekend and beyond, courtesy of the region’s wine shops, grocers, select restaurants and other fine establishments. And you can read all about it right here on Uncorked, courtesy of the Dayton-based wine listserv that painstakingly (and sometimes painfully) compiles the region’s best and brightest wine-tastings and events list and graciously shares that list with the world. And what a world it is ….

Two special tastings to put on your calendar for next week: On Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bruning’s Wine Cellar in Beavercreek, and on Thursday, Sept 3, from 5-7 pm at Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills Avenue store in Kettering, Michael Adelsheim from Adelsheim Vineyards will be pouring his winery’s wines. Adelsheim Vineyards was one of the pioneers of Oregon winemaking, so this duo of tastings ought to be particularly worthwhile.

Click on “continue reading” if the tastings and events list doesn’t appear directly below, and as if by magic, it will.

Dayton chosen to test-market ‘world’s lightest beer’

Select 55.jpg
SELECT 55

The Dayton-Cincinnati region has been chosen by Anheuser-Busch as a test market for Select 55, a newly unveiled brew that its maker calls “the world’s lightest beer.”

Some of us beer drinkers wouldn’t necessarily consider that a selling point, but perhaps that’s a blog entry for another day. Anheuser-Busch says its new beer “answers a growing demand among a segment of adult drinkers who are seeking lower-calorie alcohol beverages to complement their busy lifestyles.” And Select 55, its maker says, “offers an unparalleled clean, crisp flavor with fewer calories than any other beer currently available.”

The new beer — brewed at Anheuser-Busch’s St. Louis brewery — contains 55 calories and 1.9 grams of carbohydrates per 12-ounce serving, and is 2.4 percent alcohol. Bud Light, by comparison, has twice as many calories (110), more than three times more carbs (6.6 grams) and nearly twice as much alcohol (4.2 percent), according to figures provided by Anheuser-Busch. A 12-ounce can of the brewer’s flagship beer, Budweiser, contains 145 calories and is 5 percent alcohol.

The Dayton-Cincy region is one of 15 test markets in the country, and the only one in Ohio, according to the brewery’s news release. Anheuser-Busch said it chose markets where there is a strong consumer demand and interest in light beers.

Bob Seegmueller, beer manager at Arrow Wine & Spirits Far Hills Avenue store in Kettering, said he started selling Select 55 a couple weeks ago, and the early reviews have been positive.

“So far, most people who have tried it have liked it,” Seegmueller said. Fans of full-bodied beers have been less enthusiastic, but fans of lighter-style beers such as Michelob Ultra and MGD Lite 64 have come back for more Select 55, he said.

Six-packs of Select 55 cost $5.29; 12-packs cost $9.99. Seegmueller initially ordered only six-packs to stock, but is now ordering 12-packs because, he said, “The beer is starting to sell.”

Are children harmed by observing wine tastings?

Legislators in Maine have voted to ban children from observing wine tastings, according to the Kennebec Journal. The new law will take effect Sept. 12.

Presumably, lawmakers felt children would be harmed by viewing such behavior.

Take a look at what my fellow wine blogger Tom Wark thinks of the legislation. I’ll give you a hint: The entry’s headline is “Attack of the Stupid Wine Legislation.”

Would a law like this pass in Ohio?

American banks, take note: Italian banks to accept wine as collateral

I just love this story from Decanter.com entitled “Italian banks to take wine as collateral”.

Just imagine if American banks, credit unions and savings-and-loans were to emulate the Italians on this issue. Perhaps our financial system’s “credit crisis” would have evaporated long ago, don’t you think?

Don’t scoff. Italian banks were nowhere near as overextended as American banks were when the global meltdown occurred last year, and that country did not suffer the banking-sector calamaties that we did here in the U.S. Perhaps we need a fresh way of thinking about things — over a glass of fine wine, of course.

Free beer for a year is Coors contest prize

The MillerCoors Brewing Company has launched a contest on Facebook it’s calling the Coors Banquet Gold Rush Sweepstakes that offers “free beer for a year.*”

The asterisk is a rather important one, however, since the prize isn’t free unlimited beer for a year, but rather, is delivered “in the form of a check for $600.” Which I’m thinkin’ does not reallllly qualify as free beer for a year for a good portion of its most loyal customers. Still, when you throw in the trip-for-two to Golden, Colorado, the brewery tour, the food voucher — not too shabby. (But what’s up with a “goldfish named Banquet” being part of the grand prize?)

The entry period ends Sept. 30.

Does anybody else beside this old geezer remember when Coors was a big, huge deal in Ohio, back in the days when we couldn’t buy it here? And people would transport cases back from the west coast? My how times have changed …

Wine tastings and dinners, as far as the eye can see

Once again, the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles this region’s most comprehensive wine-tastings and events list has come through, so once again, we are afforded the opportunity to feast our eyes upon the assorted happenings at local wine shops, restaurants, grocers, wine bars and every other establishment that cares enough about fermented juice of the grape to offer us a tiny sample or two.

In addition to the regular list available below (or by clicking on “continue reading), The Melting Pot at 453 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Washington Twp. is hosting a “Strong & Bynum Wine Dinner” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26. The event will feature wines from Davis Bynum and Rodney Strong paired with a five-course fondue dinner. Guests will be Liz Rutherford from Rodney Strong Wine Estates and Kevin Bratton of Allied Wines. The cost is $59, and reservations are required. Call 937-567-8888 for more information or to make reservations.

Ohioans drinking more liquor than ever — at home

Ohioans are buying record amounts of “spiritous liquor” (above 42 proof), and they’re buying it to take home and drink, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Liquor Control and to this story I wrote for today’s Dayton Daily News business pages.

The state’s sales figures continue to suggest that the economy is keeping people at home rather than going out to bars and restaurants, although the decrease in wholesale sales was a tiny 0.33 percent, so it certainly wasn’t a catastrophic plunge. A spokesman for the liquor-control division said lingering effects of the smoking ban and increased sensitivity to drunk-driving laws also are factors in the stagnant wholesale sales of liquor to bars and restaurants. Do you agree?

New wine bar now open on Far Hills Avenue

The new Rumble Seat Wine bar and retail shop that we told you about most recently on July 1 is now open at 5853 Far Hills Ave. just north of Whipp Road in Washington Twp.

The wine bar is owned by Thomas E. Smith of Washington Twp. and is managed by Chris Holloway, who worked for several years at Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Centerville store and more recently for the Cork & Vine wine bar and retail shop off of Miller Lane.

The wine bar opened Saturday, Aug. 8, and was pouring a selection of whites and reds by the three-ounce or six-ounce pours in addition to selling wines by the bottle. Rumble Seat Wine has the license to serve spirits and mixed drinks as well as beer and wine, although those drinks aren’t offered at the tasting bar just yet. The shop plans to offer beer samples alongside the wine samples, and is also putting together wine-appreciation classes, Holloway said.

Rumble Seat Wine is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call (937) 938-9801.

‘45 Mouton stolen, then returned unopened

Check out this Associated Press story out of suburban Boston about a bottle of darn-near-priceless 1945 Ch. Mouton Rothschild that was apparently stolen from a wine shop — then later returned, unopened.

Might we assume that the perp didn’t realize exactly what he was stealing? There’s a movie plot in here somewhere …
