Ohioans drinking more liquor than ever — at home

Ohioans are buying record amounts of “spiritous liquor” (above 42 proof), and they’re buying it to take home and drink, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Liquor Control and to this story I wrote for today’s Dayton Daily News business pages.

The state’s sales figures continue to suggest that the economy is keeping people at home rather than going out to bars and restaurants, although the decrease in wholesale sales was a tiny 0.33 percent, so it certainly wasn’t a catastrophic plunge. A spokesman for the liquor-control division said lingering effects of the smoking ban and increased sensitivity to drunk-driving laws also are factors in the stagnant wholesale sales of liquor to bars and restaurants.
