French winemakers decry their neighbors’ rose shortcut

French winemakers are highly irritated with a European Union proposal that would allow winemakers across Europe to create rose wines by blending reds with whites, according to this story from Decanter.com headlined “Fury at EU Rose Wine Plans”. (For another take on the issue, check out this version of the story from The Guardian.

French winegrowers “fear that the market will be flooded with poor-quality rose,” the Decanter story says. Some good comments have been posted on the Decanter story as well.

Why do I suspect that there’s more going on here than meets the eye?

The fear doesn’t seem logical. There may be a spike in drinking what’s considered tainted rosé, but if that were so, the spike would end quickly. People know quality and will buy the quality that appeals to them. They will reject what isn’t good on their own. -Dylan, www.ourwinestory.com

The French don’t mind rose Champagnes blended from white and red wines.

Obviously I think this is an insane idea on the EU’s part, but I’m not sure what the French are so mad about. If the market is flooded with what will undoubtedly be horrible wines, won’t that just secure the reputation of those wineries who do not take part. Just because there’s Boone’s Farm out there, doesn’t mean I buy it. Having had it makes me appreciate a quality Shiraz even more.
