Two Buck Chuck won’t be if tax hike passes
Check out this LA Times story entitled “Tax hike would put Chuck over its famed Two Bucks”.
Of course, Two Buck Chuck has been more than two bucks in Ohio ever since the first Trader Joe’s opened its doors in the Buckeye state, thanks in no small part to our mandatory minimum markups from producer to wholesaler and from wholesaler to distributor — mandatory markups that many states do not have.
But more importantly: how long will it take for an Ohio politician to propose an increase in alcohol taxes just as California’s Terminator governor has done? Given the state of Ohio’s economy, and the projected state budget shortfall, my hunch is, not long.
And I wonder: if the state did raise the taxes on wine, would those be slapped on before the mandatory markups — which would compound the cost to consumers — or after?
Just a thought.
