DLM Champagne and sparkling wine tasting, in review

* UPDATED * I didn’t think I’d ever see the day when I’d see a picture like the one on today’s front page of the Dayton Daily News, did you? If you don’t have home delivery of the DDN, check out the racks at the grocery store or gas station today and take a gander at the front-page, above-the-fold -photo from last night’s DLM wine tasting. And congrats to Stephany Madliger, George Punter (whose mug is prominently displayed in the photo) and the rest of the DLM event’s organizers.

Golly gee whiz, there were about two dozen sparklers strutting their stuff tonight (12-29-08) at the Dorothy Lane Market Champagne and sparkling wine tasting at the DLM Oakwood store. Lots of great stuff. A few of my favorites: H. Billiot Fils 1998 Grand Cru Brut ($65/bottle), Rene Geoffroy 1999 Brut (($105), Duval-Leroy Brut Champagne ($40), Mumm de Cramant ($65), Egly-Ouriet Les Vigne de Vrigny Brut ($53), and Gosset Brabant Brut Tradition ($46).

The opportunity to taste wines of this pedigree — at a fraction of the cost, obviously, of a full bottle — was quite a treat.

I’ve got a story running in tomorrow morning’s Dayton Daily News that recommends sparkling wines, but the story was due several days ago and will not reflect any of the the samples from the DLM event, unfortunately. And no, I didn’t try all 23 sparklers available.

Any favorites you’d like to share?

Favorite sparklers — mine and yours

A little help, if you please.

Do you have a favorite sparkler that is available on local wine shelves?

I’m writing a short piece that will run in the Dec. 30 Dayton Daily News on the best sparkling wines for the holidays. Value is a strong consideration, but the story isn’t limited to inexpensive wines. Any suggestions?

I tasted one very fine value-priced sparkler Saturday at Arrow Wine’s Centerville store: The Ca’ Tullio Prosecco ($13.99). Plenty of intensity, with good fruit flavors but a dry finish. By gosh, maybe there is something to all this Prosecco hype.

And on the same day, the Dorothy Lane Market Oakwood store was pouring a crowd-pleasing, delicious, semi-sweet La Spinetta Moscato d’Asti ($18). This is a consistently fine bottling from a dependable producer, and boasts a peachy, lychee-fruit flavors balanced by enough bright acidity to keep it from being cloying. One other plus, if you’re going to serve this wine over the holidays to folks who don’t usually imbibe, is its alcohol level: a modest 5.5 percent.

Do you have a favorite sparkler that would make for a fine recommendation to our fellow wine lovers this holiday season? Post a comment and let us know!

And Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all …

Michigan lawmakers’ wine follies

It was Michigan, of course, that led the way to the current brouhaha over wine shipping, in the so-called Granholm case decided murkily by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Now Michigan is making headlines again, this time after the Michigan Legislature voted overwhelmingly to block wine stores from delivering wine to Michigan residents.

One Michigan legislator actually dusted off the lame, discredited argument that freer shipping laws could lead to underage drinking. Indiana did the same thing a couple of years ago. Whenever you see that argument, ask to see the evidence — just one single case — in which a teenager ordered wine from the internet or from an out-of-state or even in-state retailer for delivery to his or her home at some future, unspecified time with the intent of drinking it with teenage buddies. A real case, not one concocted as a sting operation or for television cameras.

Even the Federal Trade Commission’s staff has debunked the wine-shipping-causes-underage-drinking myth, yet still it lives on.

I don’t know the full merits of this particular shipping argument in Michigan, but I do know that when some public official wraps himself in that argument, he’s hiding his real motivation.

Holiday cheer, in the form of wine tastings and special restaurant events

The holidays have prompted some local wine shops and grocers to cancel some of their regularly scheduled tastings (sigh — so now we wine lovers are chopped liver?), but there are still plenty enough events to help us ring in the holidays in style. And we bring them to you courtesy of the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles this impressive list.

Also, in today’s Go section, we published a great list of restaurants and their special holiday events and hours, including both Christmas and New Year’s.

Dayton-area restaurants — and wine shops — have certainly given us every opportunity to celebrate the holidays in style!

Click on “continue reading” if the full list of wine tastings doesn’t appear below.

The mysterious connection between women and Champagne

The best wine read on the web this week is entitled “How Women Transformed Champagne”, written by Michael Apstein for Wine Review Online.

The story chronicles how women have played a pivotal role in the formulation and development of Champagne over the last two centuries — and in a wine business and culture that is unabashedly chauvinistic if not downright sexist.

Champagne owes it all to women. Who knew?

Brits drink more American wine than French

I’m always amazed that the British drink so much Australian wine — it is their top wine of choice, ahead of France, Italy, America, Portugal, Germany — you name it.

But now, there’s a new number two.

More American wine than French was drunk in Britain for the first time ever — EVER — last year, according to this story in the London Evening Standard’s ThisIsLondon web site.

The story attributes the turnaround primarily to the British love for California rose.

They’ve got to be kidding, right? I mean, there are some very fine California roses, but if I’m in Great Britain, and I have my pick of French roses … well …

Am I crazy? I mean, about this topic, anyway?

Italy poised to wrestle top wine-producing nation status away from France

The Associated Press reports that Italy may become world’s biggest wine producer, surpassing France for the first time in a decade.

Production projections are up 8 percent in Italy following a bumper crop (Mamma Mia!) and down 5 percent in France (sacre bleu!).

Wine as hedge fund: If the Dow drops, you get a rebate on ‘Bailout’ Napa cab

I am not making this up.

You can buy futures of Bailout Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon now, and if the stock market tanks between now and the wine’s release, you’ll get a rebate, also known as “stimulus checks,” to wit:

For $39, you purchase futures on an awesome 2007 Napa Cabernet currently aging in French oak barrels. The wine will be bottled in August 2009. If the Dow goes down, you get an economic stimulus check of $2 per bottle for every 100 point drop. If it goes up, then your 401K is looking good and the maximum of $39 is a steal for similar wines we produce that command $75+ at retail. Bull or bear, you can’t lose.

The web site’s lines just keep coming. “Own a share of an outstanding barrel — because soon enough we may all be wearing one,” the winery’s marketers say.

Death at The Greene triggers a lawsuit to ponder

Europeans guzzling beer like they’re at an Animal House frat party, study says

Take a look at this Wall Street Journal story headlined “Europe’s Changing Drinking Habits: More Beer, Less Wine, Few Regrets “.

The story’s lede says it all: “Europeans are supposed to sip wine in sidewalk cafes, not guzzle beer like American college students.”

The story notes that countries such as France and Italy — with their centuries-old traditions of civilized mealtime wine drinking — are seeing a surge of beer consumption among young people. But it also notes that some countries best known for beer-making seem to be embracing wine. Specifically, the story says that:

In Italy, where wine has been made for thousands of years, 88% of respondents over 50 years old said their favorite tipple is wine. But among Italians aged 14 to 29, only 29% prefer wine, while 43% say beer is their favorite drink. Preferences are also changing in France, another historically wine-producing region. Here, 68% of those over 50 say their favorite drink is wine, while only 24% of those aged 14 to 29 gave that response; most French young people (29%) chose beer as their favorite drink.
In historically beer-making countries, including the U.K., Belgium and the Netherlands, drinkers now prefer wine to beer, the survey showed. In Russia, where vodka is supposed to flow like water, 35% of drinkers say their favorite drink is beer, while just as many respondents (30%) say they prefer wine as do hard liquor.

An no, the WSJ didn’t just pull these conclusions out of thin air:

Wall Street Journal asked market-research firm GfK to poll Europeans about their drinking habits. In 13 European Union countries, plus the U.S., Russia, Turkey and Switzerland, GfK asked more than 17,000 people to describe how often they drink, what they drink and how alcohol affects their lives.

The story includes some sobering statistics regarding binge drinking in particular. But of its stereotype-bashing findings of how traditional wine countries are switching to beer, and traditional beer countries are switching to wine, you’ve got to wonder how much of that is the desire by children to do something — anything — different from what their parents do.

That’s a phenomenon that’s difficult to probe in a survey, I would think.

Today’s the day to lift a glass to the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition

Here’s a sneak peek at a story that is scheduled to run in the Dayton Daily News tomorrow, on Friday, Dec. 5:

And it just happens to fall on a Friday … .

Today, Dec. 5, marks the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, and some Dayton-area students of history are looking forward to lifting a glass in celebration.

Dennis Hall, former owner of Fairfield Wine in Beavercreek, said he and his wife Denise plan on dressing in 1930s-era clothing and hitting Le Monde in Dayton’s Oregon Historic District, “perhaps for an old-fashioned cocktail such as a Manhattan made with rye whiskey,” Hall said.

Boston’s Bistro & Pub in Harrison Twp. kicked off a year-long celebration earlier this year with its “Prohibition Tuesdays,” offering $1.50 pints of craft beers. And it will celebrate in style today by giving $10 gift certificates to customers who dress “to the hilt” in period costume, owner Dave Boston said.

The ban on alcoholic beverages began in 1920 but did not put an end to drunkenness, crime, mental illness and poverty, as proponents had promised. On Dec. 5th, 1933, Utah became the final state needed for the three-quarters majority to repeal Prohibition.

“At least at that one point, government actually listened to the people,” Hall said.

Now, on to the TBDWTELITL — The Best Damn Wine Tastings and Events List In The Land, thanks to the local wine listserv that compiles it:

Boosalis Bakery and … wine shop?

Boosalis Baking and Cafe at 9486 Springboro Pike (Ohio 741) in Miami Twp., across from Lexis Nexis, is now offering bottles of wine for sale to take home in addition to serving wine in the restaurant/bakery.

The bakery held its first wine tasting last Saturday, and a couple of impressions quickly emerged: the wine selection is by no means large, but it’s well-selected. Local blues musician and wine guy Eric Jerardi of The Little Store fame consulted with cafe owner Matt Boosalis on the wine selections, and there are some incredible values to be found here, such as the 2006 Campogrande Orvieto from Santa Cristina Antinori ($13.99), a bracing, bone-dry and refreshing white from Italy, and the 2005 Dourthe No. 1 Bordeaux ($12.99), a merlot-dominated blend that is as good as red wine gets in this price range, especially from Bordeaux.

Beyond that, the baguettes that the bakery sells are the among the very best I’ve tasted outside of Europe (a future “blind taste test” next to the also-excellent DLM’s baguettes would be a fun idea, don’t you think?), and the Butter Croissants are thoroughly decadent and appropriately named.

For wine enthusiasts and bread-and-pastry lovers, Boosalis Bakery is worth checking out.

For more information, call the bakery at (937) 424-0636.

Ohio-Michigan rivalry moves from gridiron to vineyards

The final score wasn’t quite as lopsided as the deeply satisfying 42-7 result from the real Ohio State-Michigan game — this rivalry was far more good-natured than the football version — but the first-ever “Ohio vs.Michigan Wine Clash 2008” produced some fun and illuminating results nonetheless.

Check out this Slow Food Columbus blog entry on the “wine clash.”

The event was sponsored by Slow Food’s Columbus chapter and by Slow Food’s Huron Valley chapters, and organized by Andrew Hall, a Columbus-area wine enthusiast who figured conducting the competition right around the time of the Buckeye-Wolverine game would spice things up a bit.

Here’s what Hall had to say about the competition:

Both Ohio and Michigan share a centuries-old tradition of viticulture which was wrecked by Prohibition but has re-emerged in recent times. From the Ohio River Valley to the upper shores of Lake Michigan, growers and winemakers are working hard to create unique and quality wines. In light of the growing concerns about the carbon footprint of transported products, this event was created to showcase these local efforts and in the context of one of our storied local rivalry. On November 16th and 17th, groups of judges convened in Ann Arbor and in Columbus to judge over 60 selected wines from Michigan and Ohio. This is the first purely consumer-selected judging of wines in either state. It is also unique among competitions in being limited to wines from grapes exclusively from those states.
The overall quality was enlightening even to those of us who were experienced. The two states have nothing to be ashamed of … Buying local — a worthy goal on its own — doesn’t mean sacrificing quality. . … Also of note, three of the five winners are all below $20/bottle and all are below $30. Wines of both states do represent value.

Here’s a list of the categories and the winners:

— Sparkling Wine: Shady Lane Cellars Blanc de Blancs 2000 (MI)

— Aromatic White: Ferrante Winery “Golden Bunches”Riesling 2007 (OH)

— White Wine: Black Star Farms “Arcturos” Chardonnay sur lie 2006 (MI)

— Pinot Noir: Black Star Farms “Arcturos” Pinot Noir 2006 (MI)

— Red Wine: Kinkead Ridge Revelation 2006 (OH)

Hmm. By my count, Michigan “won.” Time to check for stuffed ballot boxes …

By the way, many Ohio wineries have special events scheduled for December.
