5 wineries team up for Ohio River Valley Barrel Tasting Tour

Those intrepid southern Ohio wineries are at it again, to wit the following news release:

THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY ANNUAL BARREL TASTING TOUR, SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29

FIVE SOUTHERN OHIO WINERIES OPEN THEIR CELLARS TO SAMPLE UNRELEASED VINTAGES

Five Southern Ohio wineries have teamed up for the “Annual Ohio River Valley Barrel Tasting Tour.” The winemakers at Harmony Hill Vineyards & Estate Winery (Bethel), Kinkead Ridge Estate Winery (Ripley), Burnet Ridge Winery (Cincinnati), Henke Winery (Cincinnati) and Woodstone Creek Winery (Cincinnati) will open their cellars to feature barrel sampling of unreleased vintages. Currently released award winning wines will also be available at the tasting counters for those interested in purchasing that special holiday gift. This is a very traditional event common in California and Oregon, for families and friends to tour their local wineries, taste current and upcoming releases and meet the winemakers. More information is available at www.KinkeadRidge.com/barreltasting.htm . Cincinnati Magazine features this event as a Top Pick for November.

Nouveau Day — will you be tasting?

Today’s the third Thursday in November, which means it’s … Nouveau Day!

Is it just me, or have I been sensing less and less enthusiasm for the special day in which Beaujolais Nouveau and other nouveau-style wines from the new vintage are released?

Many local wine shops and grocer’s wine departments are tasting all day today and/or into the evening. Call ahead to find out your favorite shop’s plans, and let us know how the wines stack up to previous vintages.

Will YOU be tasting the nouveaus today?

Restaurants turn to wine to ferment new ideas, attract new customers

The cover story in tomorrow’s Dayton Daily News Go! section is all about restaurants and how more of them are turning to wine tastings, dinners and other wine events to help them fashion their menus and wine lists — and to attract new customers.

Before we offer up a “sneak peek” at the story, you should know about the latest restaurant that didn’t make it into this story, but which is launching its first monthly wine tasting next weekend (after Thanksgiving). Boosalis Baking & Cafe at 9486 Springboro Pike in Miami Twp. will host a Holiday Wine Tasting from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, featuring ” an eclectic collection of unique French and Italian wines,” owner Matt Boosalis said. The cost is $15, which includes appetizers. For more information, call (937) 424-0636. Now, here’s what will be published Friday:

Some are searching for new customers. Others are looking for a test market for new appetizers or entrees. Others want customer feedback on which new wines to add to the wine list.
Whatever their reasons, more restaurants in the Dayton area are using wine tastings and wine dinners to try to get new, fresh faces to cross their doorsteps.
A decade ago, diners could easily count on one hand the number of restaurants that held regular wine events. Now, the number exceeds a dozen and is growing.
Cena Brazilian/Mediterranean Steakhouse, in front of the Dayton Mall, is one of the most recent to join the trend, launching a late-afternoon tasting on a day not yet taken by any other restaurant: Sundays.
“We decided to do something fun for a Sunday afternoon for little money,” Cena owner Eva Christian said of her event that offers tastes of two wines for $10 served with free appetizers. The event allows Cena to introduce wines that are not on its regular wine list, and to test-market new appetizers and wines, Christian said.
In Vandalia, the inaugural wine-and-appetizers event in October at Mr. Lee’s Fine Dining was a smashing success, with the restaurant serving up 15 appetizers accompanied by four wines to a crowd of more than 40 people. The restaurant had intended to cap the attendance at 25, but the surge in reservation requests prompted a change of heart, as well as plans for similar events in early 2009.
Keith Taylor, chef-owner of Savona Restaurant and Wine Bar in Centerville, holds a monthly wine tasting in the restaurant’s bar. He launched the idea shortly after the restaurant opened a year ago, figuring it would be a “great way to get people to try new wines for a good price.”
Now, the tastings “really have grown and become like a party,” Taylor said. “People drinking, eating and talking to one another, making new friends.
“One of the benefits we have noticed is that people are staying for dinner after the tasting. On a couple of occasions people have met other couples and stayed and had dinner with one another. I have also experimented with dishes for the appetizers, and then gotten feedback from the guests.”
Jay’s Restaurant in Dayton’s Oregon District was among the trailblazers — along with restaurants such as l’Auberge in Kettering, The Winds in Yellow Springs and Anticoli’s/Caffe Anticoli in Harrison Twp., among others — in using wine to attract customers. Today Jay’s hosts wine luncheons, dinners and weekly Friday night tastings in Jay’s Kitchen Door behind the restaurant. While reservations are required for luncheons and dinners, the Friday tastings are drop-in events in which wine samples are priced based on the wine’s expense, and complimentary appetizers are served.
Amy Haverstick, co-owner and general manager at Jay’s, said customers have benefited from the knowledge of visiting winemakers at the restaurant’s special dinners — and they’ve also boosted sales of wines sold at retail.
Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, which launched weekly wine tastings with appetizers in its bar just after opening at The Greene in Beavercreek, also hosts wine dinners with visiting winemakers and in conjunction with local charitable organizations such as CultureWorks. Seth Brown, operating partner for the restaurant, said the commitment to wine events “shows we’re not your typical steakhouse.”
The weekly after-work-Wednesday tastings allow the restaurant’s chefs to exercise their creativity in devising appetizers that pair nicely with the wines offered and allows them to find local sources for ingredients for those one-time appetizers, Brown said. Fleming’s tries to make the atmosphere as non-intimidating as possible, putting wine-tasting notes in writing on each table and having the restaurant’s wine manager, Diana Morrison, mingle with guests to answer questions, Brown said.
Sometimes, wine-tasting events can blur the distinction between wine bars and restaurants. On most Saturdays — and on other occasions when visiting winemakers arrange to host a public tasting of their wines at Cuvee wine bar in Bellbrook that he co-owns — chef Chris Cavender will put together a menu of small-plate appetizers to accompany the wines. The appetizers could include, as they did for a visiting winemaker’s appearance last month, cold poached salmon with chardonnay sauce or cider-roasted rack of pork chop with squash puree.
Art and Carol Chin held wine tastings and dinners frequently at the now-defunct Chin’s restaurant in downtown Dayton — and that tradition continues at their Tipp City restaurant, Chin’s Ginger Grill, which hosts monthly wine (and occasionally beer) tastings paired with test-drive appetizers.
“Our initial reasons for starting the tastings were to market ourselves and bring diners in,” Carol Chin said. “But we also do frequently use the tastings to try out new menu items.” (A wild mushroom dumpling I sampled several weeks ago at one of the restaurant’s monthly wine tastings “made the cut” and is now on the menu.)
In the end, though, Chin said the restaurant has continued the tastings “because they’re really quite fun for our customers and our staff, and they’re also a great way to make wine more approachable for a wide variety of wine drinkers, including novices.”

McManis wines on tap tonight at Bruning’s

Well smack my a*s and call me Sally, the very same McManis Family Vineyards that I wrote about doing so well at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo wine competition is the featured winery at tonight’s tasting at Bruning’s Wine Shop in Beavercreek, according to the listing on the Dayton-based wine listserv, to wit:

Bruning’s Wine Cellar

Wednesday, Nov 19, 2008 5 - 8 pm McManis Family Vineyards 2006 Collection Viognier Chardonnay Pinot Noir Syrah Petite Sirah Cabernet Sauvignon

The tasting was of course set up well ahead of time, long before the Houston competition results were known.

For more on the winery, take a look at today’s post from Sacramento Bee wine writer Mike Dunne, who also served as judge at the competition.

And just to prove my colleague Mike really WAS there …

Houston wine competition produces some surprise winners

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition held over the weekend (Nov. 15-16, 2008) produced some very surprising results.

And these were pleasant surprises, if you like spending small amounts of money for good wine. (And no, the results were not a surprise just because I served as a judge for the third year.)

The overall “Grand Champion” best-of-show award went to Vina Robles 2006 Suendero, a $50 Bordeaux-style blend (or Meritage blend, if you prefer) from a Paso Robles winery. Vina Robles’ online fact sheet for the Suendero mentions only the previous vintage, the 2005, which was a blend of 80 percent cabernet sauvignon and 20 percent petite verdot.

Then came the pleasant surprises.

The “Reserve Grand Chamption” wine that essentially came in second only to the Vina Robles was the McManis Family Vineyards 2007 Petite Sirah, a wine that carries a suggested retail price of $11.99.

The $12 wine emerged as the runner-up favorite among more than 1,800 wines submitted for judges’ consideration from 14 countries and more than 13 states (and this is no Texas wines competition — less than 10 percent of the wines entered come from Texas wineries). The McManis Petite bested wines that won categories such as cabernet sauvignons costing $25 or more, pinot noirs over $25, Italian varietals in all price ranges, etc.

That would be accomplishment enough for McManis. But wait, there’s more.

The McManis Family Vineyards 2007 Zinfandel won the best-zin-under $18 category (it too retails for a paltry $11.99), then went on to win the competition’s “Best Value” award among all wines under $15.

To have one winery in that price range win both awards — again, among 1,800 wines entered — is a stunning accomplishment, and the competition’s organizers have not seen the likes of it.

If I had been a little more on the ball, the results should not have been such a surprise. That’s because I have encountered the McManis Pinot Noir at a couple of wine tastings around town here in Dayton, Ohio in recent weeks and have always been impressed with its quality-to-price ratio. There aren’t many pinots of any quality in that price range, let alone good ones, and the McManis pinot is a very good one.

But did I run out and check out the rest of the winery’s reds? Noooooo. Asleep at the wheel again.

Here’s another pleasant surprise: the Vendange Sauvignon Blanc that retails for all of $4.99 won its category of barrel-aged sauvignon blancs (all price ranges), where it was most certainly competing against many wines that cost much more.

The champion wines will be awarded their hardware — in this case, custom-made buckles, chaps and saddles — in February at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Roundup and Best Bites Competition. A Championship Wine Auction and Dinner will then be held in March. Proceeds go to college scholarships, and those proceeds are Texas-sized: Last year’s wine auction generated more than $1.1 million.

Folks in Houston are serious about their wines. And this year, they uncovered some hidden gems for the rest of the country to enjoy.

Yet another breathtaking wine-tastings-and-events list

Reading this list of wine tastings, wine dinners and other events — provided to Uncorked by a Dayton-based wine listserv — and considering it in its entirety is quite humbling. All this for l’il ol’ us?

Well, yes. We’re worth it.

Alas, I won’t partake in any of this weekend’s Bacchinalia. I’m headed off to Houston for another year of swirling, sniffing and spitting for Rodeo Uncorked, the wine competition that is part of the Texas-sized Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. You may recall the rather interesting start to this gig two years ago: An Ohioan ventures into the heart of Texas — and why they’re still laughing at my expense.

So hold down the fort here, and enjoy!

Feast your eyes on these special wine dinners

The “FoodNews” column that I compile for the Dayton Daily News Go! section every Friday is the longest, largest, most gi-normous ever this week, packed mostly with wine dinners and other special events. So even before we run the Dayton-based wine listserv’s list of tastings, here’s a sampling of the incredible events on tap for this weekend and next week, starting with one wine dinner occurring THIS Friday (Nov. 14) that didn’t make it into the listing that will appear in tomorrow’s DDN.

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar at The Greene in Beavercreek is offering a dinner it calls “Green is the New Red: 90+ Wine Dinner” that pairs some of the “green” (as in environmental practices, NOT underripe fruit, you wine geeks) wines from Fleming’s wine list with dishes that highlight sustainably farmed ingredients. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14. Each of the wine selections has scored 90 points or higher by Wine Advocate (Robert Parker), Wine Spectator or Wine Enthusiast, Fleming’s folks say.The cost is $95, not including tax and gratuity. For more information or to make reservations, call (937) 320-9548. You can also find out more by clicking here and then clicking again on ‘page 3’.

But wait … there’s more. Here’s what will be in Friday’s Go section, if all goes as planned:

Bargain wines that passed the ‘brown-bag test’

As for methodology and reliability, I leave that for you to judge, but it’s a fun read: TheNest.com piece entitled ‘15 Wines Under $15’.

Any of your favorites on the list?

Am I the last person to hear of this new reality series called ‘The Wine Makers’?

I came across a press release this morning entitled “Cotes du Rhone Announces Sponsorship of PBS Reality Series, ‘The Wine Makers’” on the wine-news web site WineBusiness.com.

And my question is: Has anyone else heard of this reality TV series? And it’s from PBS??

Heidelberg buys Wine Trends of Ohio

This spot of news from Wine & Spirits Daily slipped by me earlier this week, but is worth noting, given Heidelberg Distributing’s strong presence in the Dayton area. It involves the wholesale end of the wine business, which consumers see little about, yet which affects them nonetheless. Can anyone help us understand what this buyout/merger means, and how it might affect wine enthusiasts? Here’s the story:

HEIDELBERG ACQUIRES WINE TRENDS OF OHIO

Heidelberg Distributing of Ohio has extended its wine portfolio by fully acquiring Wine Trends, Inc., founded by Sandy Earl. Wine Trends “has a strong portfolio of brands from Napa Valley and other major growing regions in the world,” said Brent Wagener, who will head the unit as chief operating officer.
Sandy will hold the post of Heidelberg’s senior director of emerging, artisan and luxury brands. Mary Horn, former sales manager at Lion Group, was named director of sales for southern Ohio and John Hopkins, former sales manager at Wine Trends, was named director of sales for northern Ohio. Twenty-nine sales representatives and six managers will work from Heidelberg’s existing facilities in Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. Products are warehoused in separate quarters but delivered on Heidelberg’s trucks.

Dorothy Lane Market’s 2008 Food and Wine Show

The 2008 Dorothy Lane Market Food & Wine Show is history, and I, for one, am sorry to see it end, if only because we’ve got to wait another 364 days or so before this event comes around again. (Let us know what you thought of the show by clicking on “Post Your Comment” below.)

If you like food — very good food — and wine — very good wine — make a note to attend this event next year.

But you’ll have to act early. The 2008 show sold out weeks in advance. DLM started selling tickets after Labor Day and capped ticket sales at 425.

The size of the crowd caused short-lived traffic jams and occasional lines at select food stations and wine-tasting tables, but the lines seemed to dissipate quickly, and there were always other tasting tables and food stations to escape to.

And the rewards were worth it.

Among the food served: Oysters on the half shell, Alaskan King Crab, sushi, rack of Icelandic lamb (brought in by Ed Hill of Xenia, who is best known for his chicken), Roasted Coleman beef rib roll, Porchetta pork from a whole boneless pig, Jamon Iberico ham, Braised pork shoulder on baguette (by Wiley of Meadowlark Restaurant), Oysters Rockefeller (from Anne Kearney of Rue Dumaine), assorted DLM patries and desserts … the list goes on.

Wines? In a word, yes. There were nine wine-tasting tables and two beer-tasting tables. Italian wine lovers could revel in 10 or so Barolos and Barberescos. California wine lovers could sip on Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir, Ramey Chardonnay, Chimney Rock Cabernet, Newton Chardonnay, Foxen Piniot Noir, and Qupe Syrah. Sparklers? Well-represented. French? Check.

It’s a Bacchanalian feast, worth the $70 price tag. And DLM threw in a poster of the previous 10 food and wine show posters, dating back to the first one 10 years ago that was held at the former Peasant Stock restaurant.

The event has come a long way.

But enough of what I thought. If you were there, post a comment about your experience at the 2008 Dorothy Lane Market Food & Wine Show by clicking on “Post Your Comment” below.

Tasting wine with true bipartisanship

It’s a fabulous post-election wine-tastings list this week, with a lot going on, including an anniversary tasting at the Wine Gallery & Cafe and a visit to Arrow Wine Far Hills by none other than Peggy Fleming (sometimes I wonder who isn’t making wine these days …) (SECOND note: this tasting is not next week but is Tuesday, Nob. 18.)

Many thanks to the wine listserv that compiles these tastings, which serve as the perfect antidote to post-election stress disorder and to post-time-change disorder as well. So sayeth Dr. Fisher.

And it looks like yet another new entry is coming to the list: I got the following email from Jeffrey Aylor , owner of the Culinary Company in the Cross Pointe shopping center in Centerville (In addition to a good selection of wines, the place has a fabulous selection of craft beers):

We’d like to announce we recently added wine tastings every Saturday afternoon from 12:00-6:00 p.m. (Come) this Saturday, November 8th to taste some of the great wines from Vintner Select. We will be featuring the following wines:
Lady Bug White Old Vines $12.99
Holy Cow Chardonnay $12.99
Holy Cow Merlot $12.99
Boom Boom Syrah $17.99
Each taste is $1.00 or enjoy the flight for $3.00.

This book brings whole new meaning to the phrase ‘Bottled Poetry’

Author Joseph Mills has released a book entitled Angels, Thieves and Winemakers . Fun stuff, indeed. Here’s a sampling:

Introductions Made Easy
If only people wore labels,
their foreheads clearly displaying
their appellation, their varietal,
their alcohol content,
think of the time it would save.
We could cut out the small talk,
the “where are you from?”
and “what do you do?”
Appropriate pairings
would be more obvious,
we might know if they met
government standards,
and we would have a better idea
who might improve with age
and who we should enjoy
right now.

Breaking news: Chateau Montelena cancels sale to Cos d’Estournel’s owners

Well, so much for the big news about Chateau Montelena’s sale to the French owners of the Bordeaux chateau Cos d’Estournel. Check out this press release prepared and sent out by Ch. Montelena just a couple of hours ago. Think there may be more to this story?

The gods of wine have smiled upon me

Davis family.JPG

Tom and Karen Davis and their son Stephen

In recent weeks, the gods of wine have showered me with good fortune. Serious good fortune.

What else besides divine intervention could possibly explain sitting in front of two glasses of wine and trying to decide which goes best — the 1982 Le Pin or the 1974 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon — with the beef tenderloin?

Or on another occasion, sipping a 1975 Chateau d’Yquem with quite possibly the best food-and-wine pairing I’ll ever have in my lifetime?

(Note to out-of-town readers: yes, these events occurred in humble ol’ Dayton, Ohio. Come by and visit sometime. We might surprise you.)

Several weeks back I attended a dinner put together by Tom Davis, the University of Dayton professor and wine expert who leads a wine appreciation class when he’s not teaching management information systems. I’ve known Tom for almost two decades and first wrote about him and a tasting he organized in the Dayton Daily News many years ago. Among local wine aficionados, Tom is a legend.

Tom has been threatening for a couple of years to put together a gathering sometime when his son Stephen was in town to open and enjoy that aforementioned ‘82 Le Pin, a legendary wine from the Pomerol region of Bordeaux. And that’s just what he did, inviting many friends and wine lovers to a private dinner. For good measure, Davis threw in another landmark wine, the ‘74 Montelena Estate Cabernet, from magnum, as well as another ‘74, the Ridge Petite Sirah York Creek, and a smattering of stunning red and white Burgundies, while invitees brought several eye-popping wines — little things like the ‘85 Montelena and the 1982 La Dominique and the ‘97 Sassicaia — as well (the full dinner menu put together by Jay’s executive chef Justin White, and the full list of wines served, can be viewed in “the jump” by clicking on “continue reading” below).

Suffice to say I’ve never had two wines in front of me that surpassed the Le Pin/Montelena duo.

The ‘74 Montelena — the grapes for which came not from Napa but almost entirely from two vineyards in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley — seemed ageless. Its deep ruby color lightened on the edges, but displayed no orange or brown. The nose featured sweet fruit with hints of raisins and iodine, and on the palate, little evidence of its 34 years, with a solid core of fruit balancing the still-discernible tannins. The wine still has a future. (By the way, the winery’s original description of this wine predicted that the “optimum period for consumption” would be “1979-1984.” Oops.)

Words don’t do the ‘82 Le Pin justice. This is a wine that deserves its legendary status (though perhaps not its current auction price, which I won’t include here simply because I don’t even want to think about it). The wine — 90 percent merlot, 10 percent cabernet franc — boasted glorious, complex aromas that blended dark fruits with forest floor and hints of exotic spices. There were new nuances in both the nose and the palate each time I returned to the glass, and they got more compelling each time. The flavors possess an almost ethereal balance, and once swallowed, this wine’s incredible length confirms its status and reputation.

Tom said he wishes he had more bottles to share. So did everyone in the room.

A food and wine pairing for the ages

A few weeks earlier, I enjoyed a similarly revelatory experience. This one involved a 1975 Ch. d’Yquem supplied by a wine mentor of mine who lives in Fremont, OH, and a dish prepared by Anne Kearney, chef and co-owner of Rue Dumaine restaurant in Washington Twp.

Suffice to say that the pairing of the world’s most legendary dessert wine, from a fabulous vintage, with pan-seared foie gras served with Sauternes-poached Ohio peaches (which were in peak season at the time) and candied pistachios, served atop a small slice of toasted bread (or golden pain perdu, for the French among you) that soaked up all of the earthy-sweet foie gras-peach juices, was simply the single best food-and-wine pairing that I’ve ever experienced. The wine was glorious, with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, with complex flavors and astonishing length.

‘75 d’Yquem

After those two experiences, I suspect it may be all downhill from here. But I can say I’ve been to the mountaintop, and I have tasted the promised land.

Is this what happens when one wine retailer rules the market?

Yipes, check out this story from The Drinks Business headlined ‘Tesco puts the squeeze on suppliers’.

Here’s the opening graf:

Major drinks suppliers are in turmoil after being given what some are calling an ultimatum by Tesco. They say they have been given new “take it or leave it” terms by Britain’s biggest retailer that include an immediate 20% cut in the price Tesco will be charged, a doubling of promotional activity to be funded by suppliers and a ban on any price increase to Tesco for the next year, no matter what the reason.

I know this is Great Britain and not the U.S., so, like, something like this couldn’t happen here, could it?

Next to these 7 states, Ohio’s alcohol laws look positively enlightened

Check out this news release from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.

Stunning, isn’t it, that seven states would still have on their books Prohibition-era laws banning the sale of alcohol on Election Day. (Thankfully, Ohio escapes the embarrassment — this time — although two neighboring states come off as fools.)

Hard to disagree with the council’s description of the laws as a “ridiculous relic.”

We actually pay these lawmakers, right?
