5 wineries team up for Ohio River Valley Barrel Tasting Tour

Those intrepid southern Ohio wineries are at it again, to wit the following news release:

THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY ANNUAL BARREL TASTING TOUR, SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29

FIVE SOUTHERN OHIO WINERIES OPEN THEIR CELLARS TO SAMPLE UNRELEASED VINTAGES

Five Southern Ohio wineries have teamed up for the “Annual Ohio River Valley Barrel Tasting Tour.” The winemakers at Harmony Hill Vineyards & Estate Winery (Bethel), Kinkead Ridge Estate Winery (Ripley), Burnet Ridge Winery (Cincinnati), Henke Winery (Cincinnati) and Woodstone Creek Winery (Cincinnati) will open their cellars to feature barrel sampling of unreleased vintages. Currently released award winning wines will also be available at the tasting counters for those interested in purchasing that special holiday gift. This is a very traditional event common in California and Oregon, for families and friends to tour their local wineries, taste current and upcoming releases and meet the winemakers. More information is available at www.KinkeadRidge.com/barreltasting.htm . Cincinnati Magazine features this event as a Top Pick for November.

Linda: Blame me, not Donnie, for the comments placed on this entry regarding the Christmas-themed Ohio winery events. She had sent me a news release and I felt the information belonged here rather than in an entirely new post, and I asked her to post the comment.

This barrel tasting was organized for SW Ohio wineries who have dropped out of OWPA. Shame on Donniella Winchell for plugging OWPA in these comments. We would imagine the few remaining SW Ohio members will drift over time. But, since non-members have been excluded from events in our own area thanks to OWPA, I think her events should seek their own press - not piggy-back on ours.

The Wall Street Journal covers the annual barrel tasting of five Five southern Ohio wineries. In my experience, this is the first time southern Ohio has had this kind of prestigious coverage. See http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122782177443662149.html

Another great regional wine event at family owned wineries in southwest Ohio will be taking place on Fridays and Saturdays at Meranda-Nixon in Ripley [937-392-4654] and Whitewater in Harrison [513-202-WINE] During their ‘Santas’ Elves’ open houses, choose one of the wineries where you can sample three of their best wines in a souvenier logoed glass, enjoy tasty snacks and collect a minature holiday tree with tiny lights and themed ornaments. Cost is $25 per couple or $20 a single at each winery location. Dates are December 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20. Hours are noon til five each day. Tickets are available at the wineries — and only 50 will be sold. This is a great way to visit a winery, spend a little time chatting with the winemakers and owners and learn a lot in a relaxed and fun filled atmosphere. Contact the wineries directly or the Ohio Wine Producers [800-227-6972, www.OhioWines.org]for directions and/or more information.

Kinkead Ridge will also be pouring the top red wine winner in the first Ohio/Michigan wine clash! Over 60 wines tasted by professionals in Columbus and Ann Arbor. Kinkead Ridge 2006 Revelation was the number one red in the red wine category (excluding Pinot Noir). This wine was also just poured at the Slow Foods dinner at Alanas in Columbus.
