Obviously, my choice is Cuvee. The Cheers of Dayton.

It has to be The Wine Gallery Gallery and Cafe hands down. It’s my favorite bar. Noone locally can beat their wine selections. I LOVE their flights. The food is good. Everything is REASONABLY priced. Atmosphere is very relaxing and laid back. It’s a great place for a night out, as well as a group outing. Brian is extremely knowledgable if you have any wine questions. Lisa and Caerol, two of the servers are the best. You can’t go wrong with The Wine Gallery and Cafe.

The Wine Gallery downtown is a true wine bar with a relaxing, uniquely urban atmosphere. The flights are well-chosen and VERY well priced. The food has drastically improved since the opening and the Wednesday night wine tastings draw a nice, fun crowd. A great date spot on the weekends…this is the spot for those who are just beginning to love wine and those who already know it well.

The Wine Gallery & Cafe. My taste seems pretty similar to Brian’s and we seldom get away without a bottle or two. He has almost a hundred wines available for tasting at all times, and the flights — 2 oz. tastes of three wines — are good value and a great way to compare styles. He is always bringing in new wines and offers good variety. The food is good, too. It’s an ideal place for quiet conversation and good grape.

OK. It’s been a year or more since I’ve seen such an interesting discussion subject. Let’s see if I can generate a little debate here. I have to admit, I’m not a fan of wine bars. While I’ve only been a dozen or so times in the 40 years or so that I’ve been drinking wine (and that only includes a couple of those wine bars listed), EVERY time I go, I find too many of the wines have been open too long. They’re oxidized and not all that enjoyable. Frankly, I’d rather have a wine that’s just been opened, even if it’s not the same “quality” as the wines at the wine bar. I guess it’s possible for wine bars to serve “fresh” wines, but only if they have LARGE crowds with frequent bottle turnover, or charge extra so that they can throw away the wine once it starts tasting “old”. (Just in case anyone is in doubt, I DO NOT think the available wine preservation systems work very well — although they ALL work better than leaving an uncorked wine open on the counter for 24 or more hours :-(. )

We love Cuvee! Jessica has great taste in wines and generally offers those wines most closely calibrated with my (admittedly euro-centric) palate. Chris is a wonderful chef and most of the snacks on Saturday or the tasty treats at special tastings are worth making an effort to sample. Cynthia is friendly and helpful, as are other staff. If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing one of the best places in the greater Dayton area!

Wine & Dine: More local restaurants are offering wine tasting/dinner pairings [review]

Wine glasses

Some are searching for new customers. Others are looking for a test market for new appetizers or entrees. Others want customer feedback on which new wines to add to the wine list. Whatever their reasons, more restaurants in the Dayton area are using wine tastings and wine dinners to try to get new, fresh faces to cross their doorsteps. A decade ago, diners could easily count on one hand the number of restaurants that held regular wine events. Now, the number exceeds a dozen and is growing. More »
