Recession? What recession? Pass that wine bottle over here …
Check out this morning’s Decanter.com story entitled “Consumers will carry on drinking wine despite recession” … It involves a survey of British wine drinkers who told pollsters that during the current economic downturn, they will cut back spending on sweets, chocolate, beer and soft drinks — but not wine.
God bless the Queen — and all her subjects.
Do you think American wine drinkers would have the same response as their British counterparts?
Has the economy affected your wine-buying habits?

Good post Mark. I do believe the economy is affecting the U.S. wine industry. We are seeing the impacts that DanD and John point out. On one hand, many folks are looking to consume wines at home rather than spending the ridiculously high mark-ups most restaurants. On a parallel level, we have folks seeking out decent values in the $15-20 mark and there are many good bargains out there at that price range. http://enobytes.org/wine_blog/2008/05/01/cost-conscience-wine-consumers-take-note/ http://enobytes.org/wine_blog/2008/04/07/no-thanks-the-wine-list-wont-be-necessary-tonight/ Both of these articles support DanD and John’s take on the subject.By DanD

I’m actually buying slightly more expensive wine that I drink at home rather than going out to dinner and drinking inexpensive wine sold at double or triple the price by the restaurant.By John

Yes it has. My wife and I are trying to buy wines between $15-$20, and we’re finding some things that taste as good or better than higher priced wines.
