What’s YOUR favorite wine-sipping song?

The news out of Great Britain that playing a certain type of music can enhance the way wine tastes rather begs the question: What’s your favorite wine-drinking song?

No, it wouldn’t be “Red, Red Wine” by UB40 (among others). Too obvious.

I think that for both content and song title, I’d have to go with Supper’s Ready by Genesis (I know I’m datin’ myself here, but me and my buds were quite the prog-rock fans back in the day … )

I’m tellin’ ya, in the right context, that song could make Ripple taste like Lafite.

You? What’s your favorite wine-sippin’ song?

I’d have to say anything from George Strait on a cool spring evening in Texas.

I’d choose “Killing me Softly” by Roberta Flack…that tune enhances ANY wine! :)

Billie Holiday’s “You Go to My Head” is wonderful background music for a subtle, elegant red in front of the fire, but if I’m in a different mood, sipping a less subtle wine, then perhaps White Snake’s “Wine, Women, and Song”!

a 17% Zinfandel with Inagodda Davida. Neither is very subtle.

Get blog, I really like to think about the whole experience of tasting wine. For me it would have to be “It could be sweet” by Portishead.

I quess music is in the ear of the listener - so to speak. For me - The best song for sipping wine is the song made by the crackle of a fire on a cool evening night. Add in an elegant cigar and I am in heaven… But if you are adamant about what is considered a song - I would have to go w/ the “Smashing Pumpkins” cover of “Landslide”. Billy Corgan’s voice is just mesmerizing.

Mark, Kudos for not mistsating the conclusion of this study! Like the CalTech study and Clark Smith’s (Vinovation, Wine Smith) of some months ago, this study DOES NOT SAY that music changes the way wine tastes. It says, that mood - which is affected by things like music - can have a modulatory effect on: 1. how much we enjoy a particular wine and 2. which components of a wine we are more likely to notice. It is dangerous to the wine culture of this country to make these conjectures along the lines of “listening to Mozart will change the way the wine TASTES”. It is not a pedantic distincion once you get into the neurophysiology and behavioral/sensory science aspects of it. For me: Pink Maritini, “Sympathique” for casual sipping.

MJ: VERY nicely done … and now, I’ve got that song on my brain. And that’s not at all a bad thing …

Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel: “Climbing up on Solsbury Hill I could see the city light Wind was blowing, time stood still Eagle flew out of the night He was something to observe Came in close, I heard a voice Standing stretching every nerve Had to listen had no choice I did not believe the information I just had to trust imagination My heart going boom boom boom “Son,” he said, “Grab your things, I’ve come to take you home.” To keepin’ silence I resigned My friends would think I was a nut Turning water into wine”.

a few that come to mind … “it was a very good year” by frank sinatra; “come away with me” by nora jones; and the raunchynaughty “spill the wine” by eric burdon.
