Cargill recalls ground turkey sold in Kroger, Honeysuckle brands for possible salmonella contamination
Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation based in Springdale, Ark. is recalling about 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products that may be contaminated with a strain of Salmonella that is linked to a similar, but much larger, recall on Aug. 3, according to this press release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
It is not to what extent southwest Ohio grocery stores or other food retailers sold the products being recalled, which were sold under the Kroger, Honeysuckle White and HEB brands. Kroger, however, announced on its recall information web site that one particular ground-turkey product — labeled as Kroger Turkey Seasoned Ground Patty in 16-ounce packages — had been offered for sale in Greater Cincinnati and Dayton-area Kroger stores and was being recalled.
Cargill has set up a web site where the brands and some of their product packaging can be viewed.
Both the agriculture department and a Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation press release note that there have been no known illnesses reported that have been linked to the products, which are being recalled as the result of a confirmed test sample collected and analyzed by the USDA. But the agriculture department also said the strain of Salmonella Heidelberg in question is identical to that linked to an outbreak of Salmonellosis that resulted in the Aug. 3, 2011 recall of ground turkey products. And that outbreak resulted in the infection of 79 people in 26 states between March 1 and Aug. 3, including one person who died, according to the Aug. 3 USDA news release.
Cargill said in an online recall notice that the one confirmed test sample “yielded low levels of the same Salmonella Heidelberg strain that appears to match the strain previously associated with human illness.”

The products subject to recall contain the code “P-963” visible inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced on Aug. 23, 24, 30 and 31, the USDA said.
Cargill has production of ground turkey products at its Springdale, Ark., turkey processing facility until corrective actions can be taken. Other turkey products produced at Springdale are not part of the recall, company officials said. Cargill owns four turkey processing facilities in the U.S., and no products from the other three are involved in the recall.
Cargill said consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products return them to the store where the products were purchased for a refund.
The USDA recommends cooking ground poultry, including ground turkey, to an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
