New downtown Dayton restaurant sets opening date
DAYTON — “Olive, an urban dive,” the new restaurant moving into the former Wympee location at 416 E. Third St. at Wayne Avenue in downtown Dayton, will open next week to ticket-holding customers, and to the public beginning Tuesday, July 5, according to owner Kimberly Collett.
The 800-square-foot restaurant will ease into its opening, to some extent: Next week it will serve dinner to pre-paid ticket holders, then Olive will open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 5-8; starting July 11th the restaurant will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week for lunch on weekdays and brunch on weekends. Dinner hours will be announced soon, Collett said.
Part of the reason behind the gradual opening, Collett said, is to give Olive’s local food purveyors time to ramp up their supplies. Many growers have been delayed in planting because of the wet growing season. Olive is placing a strong emphasis on local foods and has about 40 suppliers of meats, fruits, vegetables, dairy and other items from the region, Collett said.
The restaurant’s web site describes Olive as “Your locally sourced, Mediterranean, American restaurant.” Collett said the menu will include a wide variety of soups and salads, burgers made from grass-fed beef, sandwiches, pasta dishes and several different shish kebab options, with many menu items available in vegan or gluten-free versions. Olive also will carry ice cream from Columbus producer Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.
Olive seats about 32 including its patio and will open with 12 employees. It will take reservations for lunch and dinner, and offers carryout. The restaurant has a juke box featuring all-local music in order to promote local musicians, Collett said. Olive does not have a liquor license.

Lunch in 14 minutes or it’s free, local Applebee’s say
The owner of 11 Dayton-area Applebee’s franchise restaurants has unveiled a new “14-Minute Guarantee” in which customers who order from a special menu at lunchtime on weekdays will have their full meal delivered to the table in 14 minutes or less — or the meal is free.
The offer doesn’t apply to the entire regular menu that is normally available at lunchtime. But the special 14-minute lunch menu does include some of the restaurant chain’s signature items, including Classic Clubhouse Grille, Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger, Three Cheese Chicken Penne, Grilled Shrimp ‘N Spinach Salad, Oriental Chicken Salad and Crispy Orange Chicken, according to a news release from Lexington, Ky.-based Thomas & King, which owns Applebee’s franchises in Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, Youngstown, Lexington, Phoenix and Tucson.
“We know our lunchtime customers are busy, and most of them have one hour or less,” said Christy Metcalfe, senior vice president of marketing for Thomas & King Applebee’s restaurants. “We hope this guarantee will allow guests to get in, enjoy a meal, and then take care of other errands during their lunch breaks.”
The offer is good only at those Applebee’s that are owned by Thomas & King, and is valid for dine-in customers only. The 14 minutes begins once the last guest in the party has placed his or her order, Thomas & King officials said.
“At this point, there is no end date for the offer,” said Jordan Parker, spokesman for Thomas & King.
Parker provided this list of the Dayton-area Applebee’s that are part of the 14-minute promotion:
