Free coffee for Earth Day tomorrow if you BYO mug

To help celebrate Earth Day, at least three coffee-shop chains with multiple Dayton-area outlets are offering a free cup of coffee tomorrow, April 22, for those who use their own reusable coffee mug.

The free coffee offer from Starbucks, the nation’s largest coffee chain with multiple Miami Valley locations, invites customers to “bring in a reusable mug or tumbler and get a free brewed coffee or tea,” whether hot or iced, anytime Friday. Starbucks said on its web site that it wanted to “encourage and reward those of you who use tumblers or travel mugs in your daily routines. You’re helping to reduce our environmental impact!” Tumblers and travel mugs will be available for 20 percent off on Earth Day, and those who bring in their own drinkware can get 10 cents off their drinks every day.

Dayton-based Boston Stoker’s nine locations will offer a free cup of coffee in your reusable mug from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday.

“It’s better for the environment to use a reusable travel mug rather than styrofoam or a disposable cup that just gets thrown in the trash,” said Boston Stoker’s Henry Dean. “Plus, we want to give back to customers who routinely use travel mugs.”

The offer from Caribou Coffee, the country’s second-largest coffeehouse chain which has stores in Beavercreek and Washington Twp., is similar to Starbucks’: guests can score a free cup of coffee anytime Friday if they bring in their own reusable drinkware. As part of Caribou’s “Happy Everyday” sustainability program, guests can get 50 cents off any drink, any size, any day, when using reusable drinkware, company officials said.
