Oregon District bar closes, will morph into dance club

The Oregon District’s Bar Tiki has been closed and sold, and the new owner says the bar will reopen as a dance club in mid-to-late February.

The bar at 613 E. Fifth St. at Wayne Avenue operated for several years as Sloopy’s until early August 2010, when it morphed into Bar Tiki. Its co-owners, Dave Camplin and Lori Yanko, also own Chappys Tap Room and Grille in Moraine. Co-owner Yanko said via email that she and Camplin sold the business and closed it Jan. 1.

“It was a hard decision, but we decided to sell to focus our efforts on Chappys,” Yanko said.

The new owner, Randy Handler, is also the owner of George Newcom’s Tavern, also an Oregon District bar and dance club located at 418 E. Fifth St.

Handler told the Dayton Daily News the bar will remain closed and will undergo extensive renovation during January and early February before reopening as a dance club. The name of the dance club will be unveiled shortly before opening.

The dance club will abandon the previous bar’s tropical theme, he said.
