The heat is on at Beavercreek pizza restaurant offering ‘ghost pepper’ pie

Beavercreek Pizza Dive — the former Roc-A-Fellas pizza — wants to expand your culinary horizons with a hot deal. An incredibly hot deal.

The pizza restaurant at 4021 Dayton-Xenia Road is offering for a limited time a “Ghost Pepper Diavolo Pizza” spiced up with a sauce made from the Bhut jolokia, or Naga jolokia, pepper, believed to be the hottest pepper in the world — much hotter than the previous holder of that title, the habanero. “Ghost pepper” is the Bhut Jolokia’s nickname.

Beavercreek Pizza co-owner Teresa Geraci describes the pizza sauce on the specialty pizza as having “a nice kick, but it is not so hot as to be inedible. We wanted the pizza experience to be hot, but still enjoyable.”

But here’s the real kicker: each pizza comes with a whole, fresh Ghost Pepper on the side, along with a caution statement, liability release form for the customer’s signature, and disposable gloves for safe handling. Geraci said the gloves, while for fun, are also for actual use, because these peppers are, she says, “unimaginably hot.”

A friend of Geraci’s gave her a couple of ghost peppers “to try at home,” the restaurant owner said. “They were even hotter than we imagined, and we thought it would be great fun to share them with our hot-head friends at the pizza store.”

The Ghost Pepper Diavolo Pizza will be available while the peppers last. Upon request, the pizza store will slice up the fresh Ghost Pepper and bake it on top. But only experienced fiery-foods enthusiasts should consider such a thing. Extreme caution is advised.

“If it’s a hit, we may add it to our menu,” Geraci said.
