Burrito chain closes its only Dayton-area restaurant

moes closing sign1.JPG
SIGN GREETING MOE’S DINERS

The Moe’s Southwest Grill at 2495 Commons Blvd. near the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek closed yesterday, July 19.

A sign on the burrito restaurant’s doors signed “Moe’s owner and staff” informed customers of the closing.

“It has been our great pleasure to serve you over the past five-and-a-half years,” the note said. “Your patronage and loyalty have been greatly appreciated.”

The Moe’s web site lists the Beavercreek location as the only Moe’s restaurant in the Dayton area. The nearest other location is in Mason, which was open and operating as usual today.

A second Dayton-area Moe’s, on Brown Street near the University of Dayton, closed in January.

Lauren Barash, spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based chain of burrito restaurants, confirmed the closing via email and added, “Franchise Partner Jason Godfrey said business was tough, and he has decided to close the restaurant and focus on other endeavors. We do not currently have plans to open another location in the Dayton area, but should that change I will certainly keep you posted.”

The restaurant employed 10 people, Barash said.

I just heard about them closing and I have a coupon for a free entree for my birthday. :-( I am sad because I liked it so much better than Chipotle. I used to like Chipotle, but I think they’ve gone downhill.

I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT MOE’S FROM THE FRIENDLY WELCOMING TO THE DELICIOUS FOOD! MOE’S WILL BE MISSED!

I am very sorry to see it go, it was the best of the chains. Good luck Jason. Hot Head is absolutely terrible and Chipolte has no flavor. Not down in Mason too much, but will have to stop by.

We ate at Moe’s every week and it was always busy and the staff was friendly. We liked it better than Chipotle & HotHead. We were floored that it closed so abrubtly. The sign on the door also said they plan to open at a new location in September.

My family loved this place. Best food and a good amount for the price you paid. HotHeads are just like their name. Rude and skimpy portions. Not again. And Chipotle charges for everything including chips. Stupid.

I liked the tomatillo sauce, the queso, the warm chips, and the fish tacos at Moe’s. The simultaneous greeting always did turn me off, but not enough to stop going. It was a place where myself and my two kids could eat and be full for under $15. I only ever encountered one rude staff member and the rest were always very sweet and helpful.

I didn’t care much for Moe’s anyway… The best burrito in town (in my opinion) is at Taqueria Mixteca on 3rd St. Delicious, good sized portions, and very inexpensive!

Moe’s was bad, I went to the one on Brown Street and was dissapointed. Hothead is just as bad to as there people especially the one on Dorothy Lane were rude and it took them 5 times to roll a burrito and when finally it was done, it look horrible as less and less stuff was transferred from one wrap ton another, I wish HotHead was good as it is local, but it just isnt. I will stick with Chipotle,

I like Chipotle & Qdoba fine; I had an indeible burrito at Hot Head - I emailed them and never heard back, so I never went back. For my money, the best burritos in Dayton are at Burrito King on Valley & at Taqueria Mixteca on E. 3rd. Legacy on Keowee also has surprisingly good burritos.

Aw …this bums me out. Just had Moes catered last Friday. It was awesome. Jason was great to work with. I wish him luck.

Moe’s was the best, but I do like all the Burrito places. I was in Atlanta when Moe’s opened there and the Beavercreek location was just as good. I’m sure every place has bad moments so I don’t understand the negative comments. Moe’s did have a unique greeting (marketing trademark?) so it may have turned folks off.

Elsa’s is the best in Dayton. Hands down they have the best burrito in town with their shredded beef. Makes everyone else’s seem like sloppy joe.

go to the locals like Pepito’s on Catalpa or Elsa’s on Linden or even El Casa Dora in Englewood they are the best in Dayton. They are the best the chains are at best full of calories and are bad imatations of the real the real thing.

I’m not surprised at all. I went there a few weeks ago - service was lousy, the food was just as bad and the place was empty. Good riddance.

They closed one day before their 10th anniversary, which would have had free queso. Still, I liked both Hot Head and Chipotle better.

all of these chain burrito joints are lousey…they imitate reality…if you want real mex…go into a mexican neighborhood and taste real south of the border food..

By funny thing is ...

we like to get Chipotle to go and then go to Moe’s to get queso to eat with our Chipotle. Didn’t care for Moe’s food all that much, but their queso rocked. Qdoba’s is nowhere near as good and Hot Head’s is good but they charge too much — you get a little tiny cup of the stuff. So, we’ll miss the Queso. Too bad Chipotle doesn’t sell queso.

I think the location was a downfall too. Too far off the beaten path. Their food was okay, but Qdoba is the best in my opinion. I am not sure what it is, but it is almost like going to Chipotle is the latest fad…like Starbucks. Their food is too spicy for me, and the Qdoba folks are nicer. I use the one by the Dayton Mall area.

None of the chain burrito spots are good. Moe’s closed in Columbus also. There is a trend. The best in Dayton is the mexican supermarket in Old North Dayton. Dont go there. I like it with spanish speaking people only.

What is with all the HotHead employees posting comments here? Just trying to boost traffic I guess. Good riddance to Moe’s. The meat was bad and the other ingredients bland. Chipotle is the best around, but quality is an issue if you go during an off-time. Qdoba is good if there is no Chipotle around.

Moe’s has the BEST queso! Sad. Chipotle has been around since ‘93 and with quality, natural, hormone-free ingredients and a simplistic menu it’s not going anywhere. On the contrary, they continue to expand. They don’t have to advertise except for billboards which says a lot. Check out their Food With Integrity mission; I think it has a lot to do with the company’s success. I definitely try not to eat it more than once every 6 weeks though — it’s a lot of calories!

I used to go to HotHead when I was a nerd. Once I started going to Chipotle I became a cool kid and got a real hot girlfriend.

I love Moe’s. However, I hate the Beavercreek Moe’s and am glad they closed. I’m surprised they actually didn’t close sooner. Every time we went there the staff was incredibly rude. And it wasn’t an isolated incident, or a single employee. It was all three times we went there over a course of two years. We figured, ok, had to be an isolated incident, but nope, it was just systemic to that location. Oh well, good riddance to them.

I go for flavor. Moe’s and Qdoba absolutely tasted like Elmer’s paste. Chipole is tolerable, but HotHead is best! It has flavor!

I too used to be Moe’s regular at this location. However, after the last year and a half the portions were smaller, and the kids meal’s were miniturized. All at the same time they raised prices. I stopped going there as I ould get a better value for my money at Chipolte or Qdoba down the street.

5 1/2 years is a LONG time for a restaurant to survive in a dying economy like Dayton. Moe’s will be missed!

I have been a Hot Head burrito fan for a long time. Eat there often’ at least once weekly. I enjoyed Moes as well, but not nearly as much as Hot Head. I think Chilpotle is a fashion statement for the college kids. But not for long.

I will miss this welcoming…I kinda figured it wouldn’t be long after the Brown Street location closed. I always preferred Moe’s over the others…free chips and 3 types of salsa…their queso was bomb also..

Chipotle, although being a Denver based company, Denver is yuck IMO; is good food and a great value and is hard to beat and obviously hard to compete with. I have traveled all over this great country of ours and have never seen a Chipotle that wasn’t busy.

I ate at Moe’s regularly. Traffic at Chipotle can be a pain and Qdoba is kind of blah. Free chips at Moe’s put it way ahead in the value department.

Wow. There was still a Moe’s in town? Was at the one on Brown St. a couple of times. Good fish tacos, but we could never get past the fact that they charged extra for everything including sour cream and cheese. Have always loved Chipotle, but there isn’t one near us. We’re in Hot Head country, and since we’ve switched, Chipotle just isn’t the same.

I have always preferred Chipotle. Never cared much for Moe’s. I guess with four burrito joints in a two mile radius (Moe’s, Hothead,Qdoba, and Chiptole), someone had to lose.

I worked on a project in Atlanta a few years ago and ate at Moe’s most days for three weeks. When the Moe’s on Brown Street opened, the wife and I tried it, but it wasn’t near as good as the one in Atlanta, so we never went back. That store closed, now the other one is closing. Perhaps they tried to change the menu because they were in Ohio, and it didn’t work out for them. Too bad.

We were surprised by the sign on the door yesterday. I spoke with the manager on the phone, but he had little to say. We’ve been customers of Moe’s for nearly the entire time they’ve been open. Their original menu was very amusing. My wife would buy a “Joey”, and I would get the “Homewrecker”. Their tortilla soup was always a great choice when it was available. We ended up getting Hothead, but are there any other burrito joints that are more similar to Moe’s than Hothead?
