Restaurants raising prices as economy improves

Check out this Columbus Dispatch story headlined “Deals dissolving: Chains raise prices, scale back discounts to boost earnings”.

It was, I suppose, inevitable that some of these bargain prices would begin to fade. The question restaurants are facing is whether diners have become so accustomed to these new, lower price points that it will be difficult to dislodge them and to “up-sell” them into higher check averages.

Many restaurants in the Miami Valley, including many that are not chains, are still offering special prices and value menus. Maybe the trend will take its time getting here.

Has anyone noticed the kinds of price increases mentioned in the Dispatch story? Any specifics?

I have no problem with the restaurant adding 18% for a tip (and I don’t see why you would, either, if you are a good tipper). There are cheapskates out there—let them cook their own food.

It is any wonder since the minimum wage was raised?

Hometown Buffet on Lyons rd in Centerville has dropped their prices for the buffet and now charge $2.00 for beverages—and if the cashier doesn’t upsale the drinks by 92% they get fired!!

Watch out for the restaurant whose menu is fondue located in Centerville. They send out a 20.00 discount coupon and then they charge you 18% gratuity. So if your meal is 50.00 + 20.00 = 30.00 (don’t forget the Tax) this sounds good, but they add 18% so let’s reconfigure: 50.00 + 18% (9.00) – 20.00 = 39.00. I understand that most restaurant charge 18% for parties of 6 or more, but this restaurant charges that whether there is 1 or 20 people. This is not fair. How do we get this restaurant to stop this practice? I always tip 20% anyway but this is ridiculous. Forcing you to pay for a 20.00 discount ticket. If you know of any more restaurants doing this let us know. I won’t be going to those restaurants either. I did not read the fine print because I had never experienced this practice before and I have been around the world. Just be warned!! Read the all coupons before using.

I’ve noticed some slight increases and I echo the previous comment. Drink prices are outrageous. Soda Pop and Iced Tea prices above $2.00 are not uncommon. The other day I ate a place that charged $1.79, but did not include free refills!! Drinks are a rip-off. I’m starting to order water more often. It’s healthier anyway…

Watch out for the soft drink prices at a restaurant named after a day of the week.(after Thursday and before Saturday). They charge close to $ 3. That is outrageous!
