New name, complete makeover for Tipp City restaurant

TIPP CITY — Chin’s Ginger Grill will undergo a significant makeover this summer and emerge with a new name: Greenfire Bistro Wine Bar, according to restaurant owners Art and Carol Chin.

The Chins say they’re frustrated over their restaurant located at 965 W. Main St. just east of I-75 being thought of in many circles as just another Chinese restaurant.

“We’ve been in business in Tipp for almost 12 years, and we are fortunate to have a wonderful, close-knit clientele. Yet after all these years, our business still apparently suffers from an identity crisis,” Carol Chin said. “Many people are under the impression that we are simply an expensive, but typical, Chinese restaurant. Many times we have heard customers say that their friends or families ‘don’t like our kind of food.’

“Since we offer a wide variety of entrees ranging from fresh seafood, steak and pastas, we can only assume that people must associate us only with ‘Chinese’ food. … With a new look, we believe that more people … will give us a try, in turn providing us the opportunity to eliminate the old misconceptions.”

Art Chin said the restaurant’s style of cooking “will not change,” although Greenfire Bistro’s new menu will likely have fewer Asian offerings. “We’ll pare down the big menu and offer more specials, and at multiple price points,” he said. And the restaurant will offer more wines by the glass.

The restaurant will get new flooring, tables, chairs, window treatments, color scheme and signage, Chin said. The renovation will be done in sections to accommodate diners.

During the renovation, “We’ll be open for business as usual,” Chin said. “I’m hoping that 60 to 90 days from now, we’ll be done.”

Some of his regular customers helped Chin by purchasing prepaid dining credits. “We were able to raise enough to pay for most of the renovation,” Chin said. The project is estimated to cost $30,000 to $40,000.

The Chins operated a restaurant under their last name for nearly a decade at East Fifth and Jefferson streets in downtown Dayton. Their Tipp City restaurant was named one of the Dayton area’s “Hidden Gems” in 2008.
