New pizza restaurant opens in Kettering
A new pizza carry-out has opened in Kettering: Mama Mimi’s Take ‘N Bake Pizza, at 10 W. Stroop Road at Far Hills Avenue.
This is the first Mama Mimi’s outside the Columbus area for the small chain, which was launched 10 years ago and operates five stores in and around Columbus.
The Kettering location’s franchisee is retired USAF 1st Sergeant Raymond Munger and his wife Teri, also retired Air Force. The couple lives in Cedarville. Raymond Munger said this morning he would like to open more Mama Mimi’s in the Dayton area.
“I would love to get closer to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, around the Fairfield Commons area. Maybe next year,” Munger said. “Ideally, I’d like to open three, possibly four locations in the Dayton area.”
The Mama Mimi’s menu includes take-and-bake pizzas with a choice of 30 toppings and seven sauces, as well as take-and-bake lasagna. Specialty pizzas include the “Mama’s Marmelletta Amore,” with apricot glaze, chicken, caramelized onion, basil, red pepper flakes and gorgonzola cheese.
The menu also includes six different salads and dessert options, including “Aunt Cecilia’s Tiramisu,” made from espresso cake, mascarpone cheese, Italian chocolate and coffee cream sauce.
Mama Mimi’s also has developed a new line of pizzas it calls “Spa Pizzas” that contain half the fat, carbs and calories of traditional pizza, according to a company news release distributed this morning, April 6.
The new pizza store is open now and is planning a grand opening celebration this Saturday, April 10, Munger said. The shop will offer two small pizzas with any toppings for $10, the franchise owner-operator said.
The Mungers first tried Mama Mimi’s pizzas in 2008, and immediately started making plans to open a franchise in the Dayton area. Ray Munger retired in October 2009, and started renovating the Kettering space two months later.
The pizza shop is in the Castle Hills Shopping Center across from Town & Country Shopping Center, and faces Stroop Road. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant employs seven people.

I have been fortunate enough to have pizza from many places around the U.S. and abroad and as far as “take and bake” pizzas go this was one of the best! Best of luck with your business and Aim High!

This pizza sounds really good and I look forward to trying it! For my taste, Ron’s Pizza in Miamisburg is the best and always been my favorite since first eating it as a child in 1966. That includes NY pizza. I like it too, but it is just different that’s all. I wish the Mungers the best! BTW, if people wouldn’t respond to nyc then it (yes it) would get bored and go troll somewhere else. Obviously an insecure idiot who can only lift themselves up by putting others down. YAWN.

We were anxious to support a new local Kettering business. Unfortunately it was a horrible experience. We waited more than an hour last night for 2 medium pizzas. Same experience was shared by anyone who ordered between 5:30-6:30 last night. Staff was clearly frantic and overwhelmed. Pizza was good, but based on the experience I doubt we’ll go back.

“How about a nice vegetarian restaurant? Anyone??? ” feel free to open your own place, and I will wish you luck as I go somewhere that has real food. Eating an all vegetable diet is just as crazy as eating an all meat diet. but good luck on one if you want to do it.

Some magazine did a rating of top pizza cities, and guess what, it was Chicago 1, New York 2, and Detroit 3. Seems like the midwest hayseeds do know their pizza. Good luck to Mama Mimi’s. Looking forward to trying it.

At Far Hills & Stroop I count Donato’s, Marions & Figlios. Just down Stroop is a big Casano’s and Mama DiSalvos. Not to mention Krogers and Meijers sell thousands of pizzas every week. ROFL. Don’t get me wrong, we need a GOOD pizza place! I hope Mama Mimi’s puts the hurt on them all. But is it any wonder we are fat-fat-FAT? How about a nice vegetarian restaurant? Anyone???

Can we please just give the people a break. They are taking THEIR money and risking it. The very least you can do is give them a shot before putting the badmouth on them. If you tried it and it was not to your liking, you still should not badmouth them. It is o.k. to say the crust is soft, crispy whatever, but give a person a break. They have put themselves out there, money, heart and soul, give them a shot before you put the stink mouth on them.

Here we go again… nyc can stay in nyc if the pizza here is that bad. Or better yet if you can do it better, start your own NY style pizza place here and see what happenz. I do believe we already have too many pizza places (restaurants in general) around this area. Wondering if Jet’s will make it. I tried them and it’s alot like Little Ceasars but didn’t taste as good to me. Never tried take-n-bake so I can’t comment on that genre yet.

We don’t “fear” your arrival, nyc. We ABHOR it. (Big word, I know. Look it up) I’m in your big apple every couple of years, sweetheart. My family’s from there. Perhaps you’ve heard of them, they “run” the trash collection business (among other ventures). They told me to tell you that you cannot return. Ever. So get used to us hayseeds. You’re now one of us. Your comments re: NY style pizza (neopolitan) is an opinion. And, I’m sure you know what they say about those, hmmmmmm, sweetheart?

nyc has been “outed” from New York City…condemned to exist in Dayton, Ohio. He can’t stand it. Must’ve really pissed the “family” off…they didn’t make him “swim with the fishes”…so I guess we’ll have to put up with his diatribe until “Uncle Luigi” allows him to come back home. Hey nyc…open up your own pizzaria…let’s see what you got! In the meantime, you ain’t learnin’ much when your lips are moving.

It ‘tis true. NYC does the personality of a dial tone. But he is right, mid-west pizza does suck. Just what Dayton needs, an other bad pizzeria. The best NY pizza and Italian is Tronies in Kettering. God bless Tronies.

Bravo on someone willing to take a personal risk in opening a new business! Congrats on choosing a great location too. Without small business, we all suffer. Best of luck to you!

I’m really hoping the crust is fantastic - The “other” take n’ bake chain’s crust (Papa M’s) is SO disappointing.

Please note this is a blog, not a news article. If you don’t want to read about food, like pizza, how about you not read the Taste blog? (Duh.) You cracked me up with the hillbilly pizza comment Biff. nyc is just another elitist with a keyboard.

We had one of their special pizzas just last night—caramelized onions, chicken, mushrooms, gorgonzola—really terrific! It was the first time we’d ever tried a take & bake style of pizza, and it worked just fine for us. I hope they do well; we plan to be back.

I swear, I see an article on here once a week touting the opening of yet another pizza joint in the area. I wonder what the ratio is to openings/closings… Also, get ready for that fool “nyc” getting on here spouting off how bad our hillbilly pizzas are and that the only place you can get pizza, period, is IN NYC…
