Dairy Queen closes UD-area location

The Dairy Queen/Orange Julius shop at 1105 Brown St. near the University of Dayton campus has closed.

A sign taped to the door tells customers, “We are sorry to say that this location has been closed due to lack of business” and directs them to locations at 2613 S. Smithville Road and 4812 Airway Road, where coupons and discounts will be honored.

Dean Peters, spokesman for the Minneapolis-based chain of restaurant-ice cream shops, said he had no information on the closing. All Dairy Queens are independently owned and operated franchises.

I think sales were so bad they couldn’t afford the labor. I went it several times a week and had good service. The parking and no food was a big problem.I think too many company’s rely the hospital and UD. The Airway DQ location is the best in the area.

Peace,we are seeing results of opening to many of these fast food places in the first place. Fast food is not a great product. As this happens, store closings. People need to go back inventing things, which can create employment for everbody. Not just making som fast food.

There is a frame shop near Frank Z, and the bookstore has reasonably good prices on art supplies, Janice The DQ at North Main & Markey Rd is gone too, as is the one that used to be on Salem, the One that used to be near the VA….shall I go on? overpriced food and touch franchise rules are driving DQ out while big chains do food better and also serve ice Cream…. the specialty shops will always have a niche…. Just as Ben & Jerry or Starbucks (they both compete with UDF and manage to stay in business

I was thrilled when DQ brought in Orange Julius. It was the only reason I visited the UD one. At least other DQs here have it, like the one on Springboro Pike.

Here we go again another buisiness on Brown street closing. The mistake these buisiness are making is that they are depending too much on the U.D. students as a large part of their revenu. If you want to be successful in the U.D. area open up a BAR related restaurant because there’s one thing for sure the students love to drink so much that they will keep anyone who serves alcohol in buisiness.Second buisiness needs to be DIVERSE before DAIRY QUEEN came on the scene we already had numerous ice cream outlets..”DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT”.

This is a little surprising, I’d have thought that w/ Dolcessa going out not that long ago, they would have increased their market share with some time. The problem is, any time I went into this location it was poorly staffed- 1 guy trying to serve a lineup of people, many of whom would leave to find a place that could help them this week.

The owner, Drew Hilgeford, built a beautiful branded store with hopes of success. I am sorry to see it did not fair well against Cold Stone Creamery. Drew is a very nice person and he will survive and rebound. The slot will be released just like the former Nothing But Noodles was to Skyline and Greatclips was just leased to Five Guys. Brown Street is a thriving market.

DDN should have a poll to help guide UD which/what businesses they would like to see near campus. And heavily promote the poll with UD students, nearby residents and workers.

Sorry to hear it. I never made it over there because of all the other great ice cream places on Brown Street. On the other hand, it is nice to hear there are TOO MANY businesses in that area of Dayton! Competition is a good thing. If they left the market because they couldn’t compete with all the other places, that is a good sign of things to come. Go Dayton!

And another one bites the dust…Hey, how about an art supply store? That way it can serve a lot of the artists at UD as well as Oregon? Seems like it may at least have a chance…

It might have helped if they staffed the place. Every time I went there, they were short handed because the manager diverted people and supplies to other DQ’s.

One problem with Brown street location, you had to park in back and walk around to the front. really wasn’t a good location. Needed a drive thru.

It wasn’t a good placement. UDF always has less expensive ice cream and better quality and choices. It’s too small of an area and same side of street. The reason it works on Woodman and Dorothy is because of parking and easy access. DQ on Woodman/Dorothy is always busy as is the UDF.

I went to this location a few times, and it was always dead in there. Once I went in and no employee came to the counter for 10 minutes. A lot of restraunts and shops opened up around the same time on Brown st., and I think DQ got lost in the shuffle. It was not a good fit for that location, there is a Ben & Jerry’s, Cold Stone, and UDF all in a few blocks. What would be a good replacement for DQ? There are already plenty of eateries and bars, what else do UD kids want?

What do you mean the “there’s only Dairy Queen to go to”? Vandalia & Englewood both have popular Dairy Queens, and there’s a seasonal one on North Dixie.

The only Dairy Queen to go to is the one on Shroyer Road, although you have to wait until spring. The others, particularly the one on Woodman in Kettering seem to use cheap ingredients.

Well, that was quick. Although I’m not too surprised— on Brown, you really need to focus on attracting UD students and I don’t think a lot of UD students craved ice cream and Orange Julius (when is the last time anyone ate at an Orange Julius, anyway?). Most UD students went to UDF if they wanted ice cream when I was there— it’s much closer and it’s cheap.
