Domino’s to overhaul its pizza recipe

Check out this USA Today story headlined “Domino’s Pizza delivers change in core pizza recipe” that suggests Domino’s is poised to change a few teensy little things — such as the crust, the sauce and the cheese — about its pizza.

Now THAT’S an overhaul.

I confess it’s been a while since I’ve ordered a Domino’s pizza, so help me out here:

Domino’s fans, what’s your reaction to the pizza chain overhauling its recipe?

And for those who were NOT fans of Domino’s pizza: Will the overhaul make you more likely to try the “new” version of Domino’s?

The Domino’s on Haldiman rocks. The people there are nice and courteous. And I have to second that opinion on the chocolate lava crunch cake that is some serious chocolate Totally yummy! The steak sandwiches are better than Papa Johns. But I think PJ’s cheesy bread is better.

it is a proven fact that dayton has the worse pizza in the country….they make better pizza in bagdad than in dayton..rumor has it that saddam was hiding in that hole from a dominos pizza delivery driver

Domino’s… what a shame. Corporate pizza at it’s worst. It was all about VOLUME SALES, not taste. I’ll stick with the ultimate local pizza: Ron’s Pizza (Miamisburg and West Carrollton) Family owned and operated since 1964! Still tastes the same as the first time I ever had it (1974). Oh yeah, you gotta try a legendary “Mushroom steak” sandwich there too. ~Enjoy!

Hi this is Tristan Koehler the Domino’s franchisee for the Dayton area. All Domino’s stores are selling the new pizza and it truly is delicious. I’ve been with the company for 25 years and this is far and away the best pizza we’re ever had. I invite you all to try it for yourself - you’ll see!

dominos died yrs ago.marco’s and fox pizza are the new top dogs in huber heights..dominos might as well close it’s doors..they suck

I was just beginning to FINALLY like Dominos. Now they go and change it? These places are crazy. Why does everything have to change all the time?

My Dominos on Spinning Rd is the bomb.You need to order the thin crust. I think each store is different

Dominos pizzas are pretty bad. I asked for ‘crispy’ bacon on one recently and they didn’t have it…but if anyone out there has not tried their ‘Chocolate Lava Cakes’ you are missing out. They don’t advertise them on tv any longer, but they still have them…OMG!! Best dessert I’ve ever tasted. It’s like gourmet or something…YUMMY!!!!

It makes me sad that most comments made on any story in DDN is negative, insulting and down right rude. Do some of you sit around all day and think up all of the nasty insulting things you can say about everything and everyone else? I pray 2010 will bring positive and appreciative thoughts into your lives.

In South Charleston is The Purple Monkey Pizza, killer hands down. Between Springfield and Enon is the Boone Saloon, absolutely the best pizza in Clark County.

As someone who worked for the single-store Domino’s franchise in Franklin in the mid-1990s, one thing that I can tell you is that Domino’s corporate was planning on making every Domino’s store identical, in the sense that you could walk into any Domino’s in the country and get the same pizza. The conversion from stone pizza ovens to conveyor ovens was one major move they made, and the elimination of Twisty Bread was another. They really like their business to be as homologous as possible. I honestly feel that the move to conveyor ovens was what stopped me from being a Domino’s customer - I much prefer the taste of stone-baked pizza. I’m not surprised that they’re making another huge change, but I wonder if this will reflect badly upon them. I’m assuming that since they’re moving forward with it, initial feedback on the new recipe has been met with resounding success. I would hope, though, that they would give the customer the option to order the original recipe as opposed to the new, but I don’t see that happening.

the residents of this town have been served imitation pizza since the beginning of time, and wouldnt know what real pizza taste like if one was served a real pie,each chain here serves the same crap under a different name,and daytonians still dont get it

I used to work for Dominos in the 90’s. I grew up on Domino’s as my parents also worked there. From then to now, the recipe has changed. Marco’s recipe is about what Domino’s used to be in the 80’s. The problem now with Domino’s is that once the Western Ohio Franchise was sold the quality went south. Unless the new owners have the heart of the orginials then it isnt going to work. When I worked there, there was a concern for quality, now with price/inventory control everything is measured and skimped to death. I still order from them and had the new crust last night. IT was better but I do think they need to go back to the 80’s recipe & some other things. NOT all change is good for business.

If you want a great Pizza try whole wheat pizza at the Hickory in Springfield. For consistantly good pizza Donatos is the way to go.

I hope they change the crust. The hand tossed is waaayyy too doughy. You’d actually be able to taste the sauce and toppings without eating all that wadded up dough. Hope they don’t have to greatly increase the price as a result of the changes.

Domino’s is alright but if you want good pizza you need to go to the small places like Joe’s pizza at Airway and Smithville or Rockafellers on Dayton Xenia in Beavercreek.

Dominos: I’ll give it a try after they change it. Noble Romans: Your hand tossed crust is worse than Dominos. It’s not even close to what it was back in the 80s. Go back to your old recipe… please!! Lately I have become a huge fan of Jets pizza. It tastes great and isn’t over-priced.

I still have a soft spot for Domino’s, as I used to work there (and was able to make my own to my liking…) But now my kids are hooked on Cousin Vinny’s Big Ten. Good Pizza, but if anybody is interested in buying about 80 Cousin Vinny’s plastic cups, please, I have them for you!!!

Hey “Main Ingredients” - Let me give you a hand here. “irony” - noun - 1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: as in “Domino’s is poised to change a few teensy little things — such as the crust, the sauce and the cheese — about its pizza.” — It’s a fairly common technique used in interpersonal communications and understanding the concept will help avoid this kind of confusion in the future.

Main Ingred - I think Mark was saying that “tongue in cheek.” Quit buying Dominos when it started tasting like the cardboard box it came in. Will try the new and improved to see if it is. Hard to beat Marco’s, though. Great crust and sauce, and they don’t skimp on the toppings.

a) Does “main ingredients” recognize irony when s/he reads it? Oops, question already answered. b) The new crust is amazing. Dominos is the closest and fastest delivery to our place, not necessarily my favorite. But I’m already a big fan of the new crust.

I like other pizza chains a little bit better than Domino’s, but I don’t see THAT much difference. So I usually get what’s cheap, or what I have a good coupon for … which often means Domino’s.

Domino’s is never a “go to” pizza choice. One the rare ocassion we’ve had it at a friend’s house - there is more crust than topping, the toppings are soupy, and the sauce gives us heartburn for days. Maybe if they made a drastic change we would try it for a discounted rate but why take the chance when there is Marion’s, Joe’s, Cassano’s, etc. that are always consistently fantastic and great to eat.

Dominoes pizza is the worst out there. You might as well get a piece of card board, put a teaspoon of sauce on it, then sprinkle a few toppings on it. PIZZA HUT is the way to go for cheaper pizza. But MARIONS is the best if you have the extra money.

Domino’s used to be our pizza of choice. My children only like pepperoni and cheese. They changed the pepperoni’s and needless to say we no longer purchase Domino’s pizza.

I had the new pizza last night. It was definitely better than the stuff they have been serving for years. It had more taste and flavor. I still put it down at the bottom of my list for delivery, but give them credit for trying to improve.

During the late 80’s all Dayton area Domino’s quit using the Domino’s National Commissary in Kentucky and tried to make the dough, sauce and some other items here in Dayton. It was awful. However, they changed back years ago and the pizza is the same at least at my local store.

Believe it or not, I have found that even though it’s a chain, the food at one location is not necessarily as good at other locations. I have gone years without ordering from a chain because of one location. Then I would order from another and it would be just as good as it was years ago. Location can make a difference

If I order Domino’s it’s for their thin crust and chicken kickers. Their normal hand tossed pizza is by far my leas favorite of the chains. The crust, sauce and cheese, imo, are the least flavorful of any of the chains. So I say good that they are changing…but will have to wait and see if it will be an improvement.

Domino’s used to be my favorite pizza many years ago. Then I moved to Miamisburg and it was never the same. I never knew what it was going to be like from one pizza to the next. Very inconsistent-so I finally stopped buying them-no matter how cheap they were. They need to use the exact amt of ingredients every time. Some days it is so loaded down with cheese I hated it. Some days it is so greasy it soaks into the crust and is nasty. Maybe one or two out of 10 is good.

I am a huge fan of pizza and can usually say that there isn’t a pizza I won’t eat but Domino’s is on the very bottom of my list. If I have to eat Domino’s, their thin crust is palatable as are their Kickers(if they even still make them).

They were my favorite when I was younger (38 now)it was a great pizza. But around ten years ago it went to the gutter. I have not bought their pizza in years! I think Marcos is similar to what Dominos was back then.

My guess is they are downgrading the quality of their ingredients in order to be able to profit from their $4 medium and $6 large pizza deals. If you have had a Dominoes lately, you know there isnt much room for downgrading.

When Domino’s had a virtual delivery monopoly (and an unambiguous 30 min guarantee) they also just happened to have a great product. Like so many industry leaders they HAD to tinker with success (the recipe) and soon the ‘new and improved’ product was vastly inferior, no doubt the result of corporate types attempting to buy ingredients on the cheap. At this point there’s nowhere to go but up but the competition have surged well ahead by now.
