One thing you should know before ordering at Five Guys Burgers
The first Five Guys Burgers and Fries in the Dayton area that my colleague Tim Tresslar told you about earlier this month did indeed open a week ago today, and from all indications — personal observation over the weekend and second-hand conversations with others who visited — the new burger joint packed ‘em in like crazy during its first week of business.
The Five Guys opening comes right on the heels of a similar opening of another burger chain new to the Dayton area, Smashburger, which is just up the street (Miamisburg-Centerville Road) from Five Guys.
One thing you should know about Five Guys to avoid any first-timer surprises: The sandwiches listed as “Hamburgers” ($4.39) and “Cheeseburgers” ($4.99) on the menu are, in fact, double-patty sandwiches — double burgers. The sandwiches listed as “Little Hamburgers” ($3.29) and “Little Cheeseburgers” ($3.59) are single-patty.
Count my Dayton Daily News colleague Hal McCoy among the fans of Five Guys. In his column on page B9 of Sunday’s (10-25-09) Dayton Daily News, McCoy lists as among his “five-star” restaurants “Five Guys Burgers and Fries in any city in America.”
The question is, does Hal know burgers as well as he knows baseball?

Enjoy 5-Guys while you can because as soon as the Healthcare Reform Bill passes, the government will make it impossible for them to stay in business. They will close any business that “promotes” heart disease, diabities, obesity in the name of controlling healthcare costs. Just wait and see! Every aspect of your life will now be in their control.

Hal has been recognized by the Baseball hall of Fame, which pretty means means in his field he is a total winner. You on the other hand, nyc, only complain about dayton on this message board. You’re the biggest loser of any one here, loser.

Both have really good food, but different styles. Smashburger is a little less heavy and a fun environment, Five Guys is good for greasy take-out.

This place is OK but what’s the big deal? Smashburger is better. Delicious food and a fun place to go. Smashburger was jamming all week.

Last time I checked, In n out isn’t heading East anytime soon. And they hardly invented birgers on the grill, so who did they rip off? Burger King? Your dad in the backyard? What restaurant concept is truly original? Not any burger joint, for sure.

5 guys is every where in MD. My co-workers and I usually visit once every other week and learned quickly to split the fries and order the single burger. Also,as an FYI…no one in our group is “fat” as the earlier poster(who I am sure has accurate data to back up that statement)suggested of their patrons. As far as being a rip-off of In n Out, it’s call free enterprise!

5 guys is nothing but a cheap rip-off of In-n-Out. It only appeals to fat people and those who’ve never been to In-n-Out. It’s quantity over quality at 5 guys. And the worst part is it’s now one of the best places to eat in this town.

We have tried both 5 guys and smash burger, and 5 guys is definately better! And yes, the burgers are doubles, but another thing I wish I had known before ordering was that the regular fries feeds two people, easily! We ordered 5 regular fries for a group of 6 people, and had 2 orders completely untouched! Also, the cajun fries are pretty hot…unless you like your food super spicy, then you would probably want the 5 guys style.

Gave them a shot last week and was completely unimpressed. The fries were soggy and the eburger was nothing special. Not certain I will go back, although the facility was clean, which is more than I can say for the previous occupants.

Chinese Buffet?! Dude, this is a thread about burgers. If you are really concerned about making your $$ stretch and getting your money’s worth, bypass the restaurants and hit the dollar store, buy 10 boxes of mac-n-cheese and eat for a week and a half! If you are looking for a tasty burger, five guys is awesome. Sure it is more expensive than the fast food chains, but it is a different experience.

To clarify, so this one doesn’t get confused with the prices apparently in the Georgia location, I got two burgers (the doubles) with fries and two drinks for exactly $16.00. That’s comparable to any chipotle or panera dining experience. For similar items at Smashburger I paid around a little over $17. And the best part about both, no tip!

I tried both new burger joints last week and each is more than likely to get repeat visits from me. 5 guys is more food for your dollar and I like that you pay just for a plain burger and can top it however you like for free with their numerous toppings, including jalapenos, mushrooms and steak sauce!.

We have them here in Georgia. For a burger, fries and a Coke, I think $10 is alot. Take that money and go get a Chinese Buffet, I think you will then get your moneys worth.

The fries need to be eaten pretty much as soon as you get them, they are fresh but do not stand the test of time. Excellen, though, and you get quite a bit for your order.
