9 foods your kids should avoid

Time Magazine’s web site has come up with a Nine kids food to avoid list that should be a conversation-starter.

And I’ll start one.

The list singles out Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Crackers for criticism because of its high salt content, then suggests as a “Better Choice” Honey Maid graham crackers.

So sugar is better for kids than salt?

But I don’t think anyone could argue that fresh fruit would be more nutritious than Fruit by the Foot.

Anything stand out to you? There are some funny and nostalgic comments on this entry on Consumerist.com about the Time list that are worth perusing …

Yes, the nutritional content of the ‘kid’ mac n cheese is different. But that is because they have different directions, one calls for more milk and butter than the other, though I forget which is which.

ANY packaged food (geared towards adults or children) has tons of sodium in it. Sodium is a preservative. Also, have you ever taken a look at all the carbs in the “Smart Ones” and Lean Cuisine for adults…that is seriously wrong!

Everything on the list is directly geared toward children. Thus, Scooby Doo and not regular Kraft Mac & Cheese. It’s a little confusing, though. Kids will eat mac & cheese for dinner, not necessarily as a side dish, so brown rice is not really an appropriate substitute.

Also, I think there are a lot worse things for a child to eat/drink than Sunny Delight… I don’t know how much confidence I actually have in this list.

I’m kind of curious why they listed “Scooby Doo” mac & cheese, specifically. Is the nutritional content different than any of the other varieties of Kraft Mac & Cheese??

I’m seeing lots of sugars, sodium and carbs in all of this. We keep lots of fruit on hand at all times for the kids. Even natural applesauce…
