Restaurant deal falls through at The Greene
BEAVERCREEK — Rojo is a no-go.
Back in November, signs were posted at The Greene announcing that a new Mexican restaurant named Rojo would be “coming soon” to the shopping, entertainment and housing complex.
At the time, Mike Duffey, spokesman for The Greene, said the signs should be considered a “teaser” and that a formal announcement would come before the end of 2008. But late Thursday, Feb. 26, Duffey said Rojo “will not be coming to The Greene.”
The Columbus-based owners of the restaurant were leaning toward a different food concept that officials at The Greene did not think would work at the complex, so plans were called off in what Duffey said was a mutual decision.
“We’re actively talking with other restaurants, and we hope to have a restaurant in there by the second half of 2009,” Duffey said.

The greene wants trendy upscale chain restaurants with proven concepts. All the new complex owners do the same thing. I avoid the greene at all costs. I do not need to be “seen” there. The restaurants are over priced and most are medocre. The food at that English Pub themed restaurant is downright nasty and grossly over priced.

Just curious since someone posted about Dominics. I heard they were going to open up in the old Margarita Village/BBQ/Red Rock building down in West Carrollton. Anyone else hear that rumor?

MLK, I agree. The owners of the Funny Bone Comedy Club, has had clubs in various cities around the USA and have stayed only around 5 yrs, then they close. Not certain how long they have been at Greens, but I know comedians who say they wont do FB’s due to that fact. So that is one that will be gone by 2011 at least. For Comedy Go to Wileys..27 yrs in Dayton.

The Greene is the classic bubble economy venture, complete with unsustainable businesses like Cold Stone Creamery. It’ll be half empty by 2010.

Cafe Istanbul would still be there if they had offered decent sauce with their kababs and softened the Anatolian-brutalism interior design a tad. Here’s a hint: ethnic restaurants don’t survive if they don’t have, you know, sauce.

I wish Nutrisystem would open a restaurant. They could prepare the meals and have Marie Osmond perform on the weekends. Great for the Greene.

Okay, some people wonder about why local restaurants are not common at large projects like The Greene. As someone who knows how this works, allow me to explain. While generally speaking the owners of places like this DO want cool, hip, savvy local restauranteurs, these local operators often create too much risk to the landlord because they go out of business. The survival rate in the food industry is horrible; it’s just a tough business. So its not that they don’t want them, it’s just often not practical because once they fail, what is the landlord supposed to do then? They’re sitting on an empty space hoping to find someone else. Other times, when the landlord is willing to take that risk, the restauranteur is unwilling or unable to put up certain guarantees that protect the landlord from losing money. Landlords often have to put money up themselves at the beginning to build the space, etc. I’m just saying don’t blame the landlord; they’re often doing the best they can to give you what you all say you want. But this is also a business and they can’t give away all the space for free or risk everything on a hunch.

I’m curious as to what this “different food concept” is.

Too bad the folks that owned Dominic’s refuse to open another location. It would be perfect at The Greene.

Who wants to open an independent restaurant? You people act as if you know 7,983 people waiting in line to do so, well they are not. The Greene will take anyone as long as they are willing to pay their rent. Are there any indy’s opening around town? NO. About 2 or 3 open in a given years, usually small scale. They open in cheap rent places working on shoe string budgets. I want more indy to open up, but WHO is going to do this. Get me a list of people who A) want to open a restaurant, B)have some cash or investors C) have a theme or idea that is somewhat unique D) who want to specifically want to open at The Greene. My guess is there are not a lot of people in this boat, yet chains have the corporate backing and cash to do so. Why don’t people open indy coffee shops, indy bookstores, indy shoe shops, indy hardware stores, indy anything? Why? BC tax laws bump them out, fierce competition, and most of all no one has any cash to do so. If people were interested in opening an indy restaurant, well then they would open one. You can wish and want till they day you die, but they don’t open bc not a lot of people have an interest to do so, in this business climate or 5 years ago. The market dictates whether or not people go into business. If there is a need then they would open all the time. Right now there is not a big need. There is a lot of “wishing.” Well, for all the “Wishers,” DO IT YOURSELF AND STOP WAITING FOR OTHERS TO DO IT. THE WORLD DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND YOU. Are all of you liberals, wanting the Government to mandate businesses practive of who can and can’t open a new business. I want more indys as well, but there is not a NEED. The restaurant business, from chains to locals, are hurting. Why would anyone decide it is a good idea right now? Also, B&M about restaurants while you shop at Home Depot, Kroger, Best Buy, etc. You folks are losers.

“The Columbus-based owners of the restaurant were leaning toward a different food concept that officials at The Greene did not think would work at the complex” - Should read - “The Greene did not think”

In 2006, I contacted the Greene about putting and my independent restaurant at the Greene. They were not interested in a small time independent at the time. They were only looking for chain restaurants as tenants. Things were going great, they were riding the publicity wave and they knew that they could pick and choose tenants. Now that the economy is down and they are trying to get phase two finished and rented. I hope they don’t call me now. It is well known, that chain restaurants are safe and boring and so are it patrons. Praise be to Obama (Allah).

William, why don’t you open the restaurant YOU want. Oh, that is right, you have NO MONEY. I would love to see an independent restaurant open up, but the fact of the matter is that no one in this area has the cash to do so. It is easy to wish for this, but another thing for it to actually happen. Chains have huge support and a history of success - something is better than nothing. I would love to open up a place, but I HAVE NOT MONEY, NO INVESTORS. So that is life for me. I would like to see an indy German theme restaurant, but I understand that there are not a lot of people in this area that could pull this off. It is about cash William, so put your money where your mouth is……

Here’s a crazy idea - how about opening an independent, locally-owned restaurant at the Greene? I’m tired of all of these chain stores squeezing out small businesses.

Quick!!! Someone call the President. He’s passing out our money left and right. I’m sure he can send some to make sure a restaurant opens. Lord knows we need another restaurant in that area.
