PETA to ‘reward’ vegetarian foie gras
Is it possible? Check out this story from the Sydney Morning Herald headlined “An offal idea: top chefs stew over vegie foie gras” in which PETA offers up a $15,000 prize to a chef who can create the best vegetarian alternative to foie gras.
Could it be … just hypothetically speaking, mind you … that the folks at PETA couldn’t really give two hoots about the foie gras alternative but just wants to generate publicity about itself and its opposition to the luxury food item made from the livers of overfed geese?
No, not possible.
Would you serve on the tasting panel to evaluate the vegetable-based alternatives to foie gras?

Some people, are so fixated on PETA!! You can Get The Facts from at least a dozen other sources: the facts don’t change no matter who provides them. Cruel and unhumane treatment of animals is just what it is. Why shoot the messenger? These organizations did not create cruel factory farming like we are talking about. If Mark Fisher had reported that the Humane Society or Born Free was having a veggie Foie Gras contest, would you all be scolding them too??

I agree with Rich! I also think that getthefacts is a pro-PETA supporter. PETA’s intentions are good (for the most part), but they go about it in a REALLY WRONG way!(ex: comparing the slaughter of cows to the Holocaust…WTF was PETA thinking? They weren’t!)

It’s not just over feeding, it’s force feeding. As much as I disagree with the extremeness of PETA most of the time, Foie Gras is the after effect of a disgusting mistreatment of an innocent animal.

I wonder if a good faux gras can be made from Portobellos? PETA has its publicity arm, which intentioanlly uses extreme measures, to bring focus on what they feel needs attention. The PETA you don’t see has helped out quite a bit with helping gain more humane treatment of animals.

Big Beefy - resorting to caps yelling? Why because this is beyond your comprehension - that treating animals humanely is to much to understand? That Foie Gras is a disgusting by-product of a disgusting farming practice? Loose the attitude about PETA and see beyond that. And what do cows have to do with this? Treating LIFE humanely is what this about - without animals, this Earth would die - without Man, this Earth would flourish. You think Man is unique and deserving over animals, but in essence, He is not.

What I want to know is when will the Dayton Daily News get some QUALIFIED writers and stories? Between this one and that lovely little number Arch wrote yesterday about the political cartoon, I’m getting weary. DDN, you’re the Barney Fife of news.

GIMME A BREAK YOU JOKERS… THIS IS A RADICAL GROUP OF EXTREMISTS THAT DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD. PEOPLE DO NOT TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY BECAUSE OF THEIR ASININE STUNTS. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT THINK OTHERWISE, THEN WHY DONT YOU BRING SOME COWS INTO YOUR HOUSE AND LET THEM TAKE OVER AND LIVE THERE - AND YOU CAN GO OUT LIVE IN A PASTURE - SINCE APPARENTLY ANIMALS ARE EQUAL TO HUMANS….

Does PETA say and do some off the wall things? Sure they do. So does Rush Limbaugh! So what. I would say that PETA is the world leader in trying to protect animals from humans, and rightly so. The problem is people like Mark Fisher who take anything PETA says or does and twist it into some sort of bizarre thing. I really don’t see anything wrong or strange about this story.

Of course PETA wants publicity…publicity, whether good or bad draws attention to their causes. These causes need our attention because they are causes that we should all be fighting for. Torture and the inhumane treatment of animals should not be tolerated. Bravo to the educated people out there that have done their homework and know what they are talking about.

Doesn’t matter, about publicity or shock value, everyone knows who PETA is, they dont’ NEED publicity, take them for what the do. Dont’ like PETA?? Check out the dozens of other orgs with the same message. See for yourself search no foie gras. Big Beefy, check out animals in labs undergoing inhumane testing for no gain. Again see for yourself and search animal labs testing.

Big Beefy, check what you said, “it’s not right to torture animals” unless they are for food or testing? Get real, no one needs foie gras, you probably can’t even pronounce the words and I’m sure, thanks to getthefacts, you now know where it comes from. Foie gras is banned in many places.

PETA lost all credibility with its sea kittens campaign. Trying to save force fed geese may be noble but is better done by some other group.

If PETA wouldn’t do such ridiculous things as trying to make ice cream out of human milk and try to get school children to rename fish ocean kittens to keep them from harming the fish, people might take them more seriously. They are out for more publicity. Pure and simple.

getthefacts - I’m sorry but humans are superior to animals, end of story. Yeah it’s not right to torture animals, but using them for testing and as a source of food is in no way a bad thing. And you know what else… I’m going to have a big piece of prime rib tonight for dinner!

getthefacts, you’re naive if you think PETA doesn’t want publicity. It’s hard — no, it’s IMPOSSIBLE — to maintain PETA doesn’t do some things purely for publicity after hearing their recent “suggestion” that Ben & Jerry’s should make ice cream using human milk, rather than cow’s milk. For those who doubt I’m serious, it DID happen. Having said that, OF COURSE the plight of animals is important. Both things can be true at the same time — PETA can make serious points, but can also be out for “shock” and publicity.

Jane, it’s not about donating to PETA, it’s about raising the awareness of the plight of animals. And if the writer, Mr. Fisher would do his homework, he would realize that PETA doesn’t need this issue to generate publicity for itself, that’s a stupid comment. Try watching video of ducks being forced fed. Foie gras (translated literally from French as “fatty liver”) is produced by cruel and inhumane farming practices. At just a few months old, ducks are confined inside dark sheds and force-fed enormous amounts of food several times a day. A farm worker grabs each duck and, one by one, thrusts a metal pipe down their throats so that a mixture of corn can be forced directly into their gullets. In just a matter of weeks, the ducks become grossly overweight and their livers expand up to 10 times their normal size. Birds suffer tremendously, both during and after the force-feeding process, as their physical condition rapidly deteriorates. In just a few weeks, their livers swell up to ten times their normal size, and the birds can scarcely stand, walk, or even breathe. They are then slaughtered, and their livers are peddled as a “gourmet” delicacy. Given this, it matters not if it’s PETA, or HSUS or the Animal Protective Institute that brings this issue to light; it matters that the public is educated to the this inhumane practice. Yeah, I would serve on the panel to taste the vegetarian alternative.

The only reason PETA does anything is to get the attention back on them! Don’t donate to PETA…donate to good charities like ASPCA & the HSUS.
