Nothing can satisfy more than the delicious tomato sauce served over Dominic’s lasagne, except of course, a side of salad with their garlic dressing

I have to say that Dayton has quite a few great locally owned Steakhouses,: Pine Club, Paragon, Oakwood Club and Treasure Island to name my favorites. I would say great steaks would be our signature dish.

The great history of Dayton, Ohio comes from the inventors that opened up opportunity to many diverse groups of people. I feel the one of the biggest impressive groups were the Eastern Europeans. They brought some of best dishes from their part of the globe. The one that should stand out to all who really know Dayton is the CABBAGE ROLLS and the Hungarian Sausage. The only dish that can out due this is the finish of the O! so great Hungarian Pastry.

It has to be “Mike-sell”s” potatoe chips they’ve been here two years shy of one hundred years. They are still family owned and everyone I know ships their chips out of state to realatives who can’t buy them in their state. My vote has to be for “Mike-sell’s” as their slogan says, “they are delicious!”

I like most of the suggestions, but I think a signature dish should be a dish (not chips or candy). I’m relatively new to Dayton and the most creative, delicious dish with a variety preparations I’ve seen here is your mac and cheese — a true dish with great “comfort food” appeal. John Henry’s M&C WAS incredible; same goes for Pacchia’s lobster M&C. If not quite a signature of Dayton, it could quickly become one with a Dayton M&C competition among area restaurants. How about announcing one, Mark?

OK, if we are looking into history (and I don’t this that is the right answer to this poll) I would have to say that Lukas fried pork tenderloin sandwich was truely unique. Lukas was a small bar neighborhood bar right next to Sucher’s packing company on Western Avenue. The sandwich was most like a deep fried breaded pork scallopini. With some mustard and banana peppers. A perfect combination.

Esther-Price candy and Mike-Sells chips are delicious, but I have to say that one of the first things that struck me when I moved to the Dayton area from Maryland was square-cut pizza. Pizza in Maryland was your traditional triangle-cut slices.

I’d have to say Flying Pizza. Also, pizza cut into squares is NOT signature or Dayton Ohio so how the heck is that even on the list????

Are you kidding me? Potato chips? Old Hickory? Stewed tomatoes? When it comes to food Dayton Ohio is a black hole. Square pizza? Marion’s??? If one more person tells me Marion’s pizza is the best ever I may just lose it.

Goody’s hamburger sauce. OK, it’s been gone for a little while, but it was unique. Just try to name something comperable! I’d give anything to have that and their shoestring potatoes right now!

Killer Brownies FTW!!! How can anyone not like them… Stewed tomatoes? Really? Is square pizza really a signature dish. Everywhere I’ve been I’ve had square pizza available to me. Killer brownies are delicious.

I had to go with other because I don’t feel “pizza cut into squares” is a fair category. Cassano’s has nothing on Marions. I would only put Marion’s in because I always send people there if they are visiting the Dayton area.
By better days ahead?

Unfortunately, there is nothing Dayton has that is signature…I guess that’s part of the problem with the area. Perhaps a starting point to better days ahead? I like the city but really dislike the reputation..or lack of one it has.

I see that the old folks are posting again. Marions’s & Cassano’s are horrible when served hot and worse than dog food when cold. And to the other poster who said a Shield’s cheesesteak, go to Philly and get a real one. Shield’s is no better than a Penn Station one.

Ugh, this list makes me long to live in another town with better food. Esther Price candy is overrated and no different than any other manufactured chocolate, Mike-Sell’s Potato Chips are fine, but no better than national brands… Pizza cut in squares is an abomination… and Stewed tomatoes? How old were the participantes in this poll? 83?

Signature “dish”. I’ve eaten at many restaurants in and around the Dayton Area. There really isn’t a signature disk, Seafood=Jays, Ribs=Old Hickory and Steak = Paragon or Pine Club. If there is a signature dish, I’d like to try it. The stewed tomatos at Paragon or Pine club are not that great……

I agree that the all of the items listed are distinct to Dayton. I don’t think that either Mikesell’s or Esther Price qualify as “dishes.” While I agree with mtgolflady that they should be classied as signature snack and sigature sweet, I think the pizza is definitely a “signature dish.”

OK - I voted for square pizza but am rethinking it after reading the comments… KILLER BROWNIES it should be. Really. That’s what it should be. If you can’t use the trade name, call them “brownes that will kill you” or “murderous sweets” or “homicide chewies.”

None of the above. The signature dish for dayton, should be Shields Cheesteak,or Coco’s Barbecues Chicken Burger. Step out of the usual, and allow your taste buds to diversify.
