Recycle and profit from old cell phones
We are in the midst of National Cell Phone Recycling Week, and USA Today noted our options for recycling our old phones — some of which can make you money.
The news source noted that the Environmental Protection Agency lists drop-off centers and mail-in options from AT&T, Best Buy, Office Depot, Sony Ericsson, Sprint, Staples, T-Mobile, LG Electronics, Verizon Wireless, Nokia, Samsung and Motorola, as well as other options.
It also reported that several companies, including BuyMyTronics, Gazelle and YouRenew, will now buy your old cellphones and other electronics.
For more info, as well as tips on what to do before you recycle your old cell phone, see the USA Today story.
And, speaking of weeks supporting the environment, the NBA also is hosting its second annual Green Week this week.

What a horrible recommendation. Cell phones, like computers, store masses of information that are not always ‘deleted’, despite recipients’ claims. phones should be crushed beyond recognition after use. They should be treated as small computers.

non SIM phones like Verizon are the worst…if you can store data on Sim or SD card you can often take all of it with you when you get rid of a phone

Isn’t there another option all year round? Donating to women’s shelters? I heard they will have them reprogrammed only for emergency 911? Not sure about this.. but thought there was something like this.

there is a web site for ohio to drop off items for recycling. This is their statement”Ohio Drop Off is dedicated to helping individuals and companies dispose of their used computer equipment properly and responsibly. During the process, however, the safety and security of your data is a primary concern. During the process of recycling, when any device that could possibly contain any older data is processed, Ohio Drop Off handles it in two ways. If the device is to be remarketed, we put the device through a time-tested process that effectively and efficiently destroys all data, rendering it completely unrecoverable. If the device is not remarketable, the device is put through a process that physically destroys the product, thus rendering the data unrecoverable.”

It’s easy to remove your hard drive on your computer before donating it. There’s no need to be afraid of what’s inside since your getting rid of it anyway, who cares if you break something. You might actually learn something about computers while messing around inside, too. I don’t know enough about cell phones to make sure my data is erased.

We, Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley, accept all kinds of electronic and computer equipment. You can donate your working and non-working items at any of our retail locations…and your donation then supports programs and services for people with disabilities. Our new computer recycling program has kept 25,000 pounds of items out of the waste stream/landfills.

For those worried about information, get a magnet. Something more significant than a refrigerator magnet. A speaker magnet, at least. Effective and what any responsible recylcer would use. Theirs is larger, of course.
