Spring cleaning deals, professional options

Spring has bounced into town, and brought with it the desire for many of us to give our homes a thorough cleaning.

There are a couple of ways to go about this: either by cleaning the house yourself, and with the help of family members if you are so fortunate, or by hiring someone else to do it.

One way can save you money, while the other way can save you time and energy.

Do it yourself

The cheapest way to clean your house is to do it yourself. It can be a big investment of time, depending on the condition of your home and the depth of the cleaning, but it also can be the best way to get the cleaning you desire.

If you get a deal on the products you use, that increases your savings even more.

For cleaning my house, I pretty much stick to Comet, Windex and Pine-Sol, although I have flirted with various shower cleaners along the way.

Those initial three are relatively cheap, but ShopSmart; magazine noted a few ways to clean that are even cheaper.

In its April issue, which is out now, it suggests just warm water and soft cloths for cleaning mirrors, weekly doses of warm soapy water on shower walls, bleach and water for bathtubs and sinks, machine-washing fabric shower curtains, and bleach or diswashing liquid for bath and shower mats.

Also, Consumer Reports added that combining vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice are among the common household items that can clean glass, wood furniture, silverware and walls.

Some area stores have deals on cleaning products this week.

CVS/Pharmacy (with card) has Scrubbing Bubbles, Windex and Oust for two for $5; Swiffer Wet Jet cleaner and Sweeper wet or dry cloths for $3.99; and stain remover and bleach for two for $3. The store also has Palmolive dish liquid for 97 cents.

And Kmart beat Rite Aid’s price on select Clorox products for three for $5; Rite Aid had them two for $5. Kmart also has Pine-Sol and Tilex for two for $6.

Also, dollar stores are great sources for inexpensive cleaning products.

Professional help

If you don’t have the time to clean your house yourself, or just want to treat yourself (or your loved one), you can enlist the help of a professional.

What you will be charged often depends on the size of your home, the condition of your home and what exactly you want to have done.

But, just to get an idea of what’s out there, here are some price ranges you can expect from a sampling of area house cleaners for a one-time spring cleaning service:

Absolute Cleaning: This Enon service charges between $150 and $250. Call (937) 863-0256 for more information.

Donna’s Cleaning Service: Located in Dayton, this business charges between $65 and $150. Call (937) 416-6797.

Maid to Clean: Located in North Dayton and serving the Greater Dayton area, Maid to Clean charges $25 per hour and the representative said an average home takes about four to five hours to clean. Call (937) 278-4005 if you live north of town, and (937) 672-5206 if you live south.

The Maids: This business, which is in Kettering and services primarily southeast Dayton, charges $132 per hour, plus tax, for its team of four cleaners. The representative said an average spring cleaning for a four-bedroom, three-bath house takes about an hour and a half. Call (937) 252-0600.

Merry Maids: This Kettering-based establishment, which also has a Huber Heights site, charges between $200 and $300. Call (937) 438-5711.

Metro Maid: This Huber Heights business charges between $86 and $240. Call (937) 235-5859.

Molly Maid: The Beavercreek location, which serves the east and south suburbs of Dayton, sends out a team of two that charges $80 for one hour, and in 15-minute increments after that. It ends up being $152 for two hours, $228 for three hours, etc. The representative noted that the consumer can end the cleaning whenever they want and, as with many, can choose what rooms they want to have done. Call (937) 431-1865 or (937) 436-2950.

Pro-Clean Service: This cleaning service, located in Dayton and serving the entire Dayton area, charges $80 an hour for a three-person crew. The representative said the business averages cleaning about 1,500 square feet in an hour. Call (937) 531-4600.

Sparkling Pro Cleaning Service: Located in Dayton and serving the surrounding suburbs, this business costs between $85 to $140. Call (937) 613-0186.

Cash for Appliances update

The Cash for Appliances program began Friday, March 26, in Ohio. The program offers Ohio residents who purchase select Energy Star-qualified appliances and recycle their old appliance rebates for doing so.

Since this program is new and the state has been working out how to best implement it, there have been some developments since last Sunday’s how-to guide.

The biggest update is that the Ohio Department of Development announced Monday that the program likely won’t last until the end dates initially noted.

It is intended to run through April 19 for refrigerators, washers and dishwashers, and through May 24 for water heaters.

But the ODD is getting the sense that the funds, at $100 to $250 per appliance, may be exhausted in a few weeks. Therefore, it advised consumers who want to receive a rebate to act soon.

In fact, as of this morning, March 28, $6.9 million of the $10.3 million available had been claimed.

Also of note (thanks to a great question from a reader) is that the program does not cover appliances that are donated; they have to be recycled to qualify.

Bethany Close of the ODD said, although that is an admirable use for the appliance, the aim of the program is to get the inefficient appliances off the street.

For complete, up-to-date details on the program, including a list of all participating retailers, visit www.OhioApplianceRebate.com.
