GM recalling 1.3 million compact cars
In the latest massive vehicle recall, General Motors announced today, March 2, that it was recalling 1.3 million compact cars due to a problem with the power steering.
The recall covers the 2005-10 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007-10 Pontiac G5 in the United States; 2005-06 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005-06 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico, GM said in a statement.
Reportedly 14 crashes and one injury have occurred.
The Wall Street Journal noted that the condition takes time to develop and tends to occur in models that are out of warranty.
“While greater steering effort under 15 mph may be required, these vehicles are safe to drive because the customer can still steer the vehicle,” said GM Vice President of Quality Jamie Hresko. “When the condition occurs, both a chime will sound and a ‘Power Steering’ message will be displayed.”
According to MSNBC, GM said it is developing a remedy to fix the problem and will notify customers when the plan is finalized.

Wonder if the Lame Stream Media will hype this situation with ‘Government Moters’ (as it did with Toyota)? Wonder if the Sec of Transportation will ‘warn’ consumers to stay away from GM (as he did with Toyota)? Wonder if Toyota’s sales will continue to rise because of their increased quality versus the continued decline of ‘Government Motors’?

Amazes me how some people are rooting so hard for GM to fail. This is an iconic American company. Do you just hate everything American that much?

Wow. Where to begin? Firstly, just because the government helped out the company doesn’t mean Obama is now in charge of it… therefore it is irrevelant whether or not he knows anything about cars. Also, 90% of these cars were manufactured AFTER the bailout - thus Moot point, and frankly a rant about Obama not related to the GM recall. Secondly, not sure how affirmative action is the cause of a power steering recall. What? A female or an African American are the reasons why the powersteering went bad? DESIGN FLAW PEOPLE! those making them simply to their assigned jobs. It pains me to see such skewed, and frankly moronic, comments regarding a topic that is serious. .

Well I wonder if our great government will investigate GM Government Motors like they have Toyota. I do not think so; they are trying to kill Toyota, great way to get rid of your competition! Our government and their union friends own GM, Chrysler (with the French). I will replace all my Chrysler products with a Toyota as I will NEVER buy a car from Government Motors GM & Chrysler.

Get over it, we have democratic president who happens to be black. He saved us from going into a depression. The republicans destroyed this economy, now the demorcats have to save it. saving one of the last industries in this country had to be done. Who is going to build our military equipement if we have to go to war. Gm , ford and chrystler have made this country great, I say lets help them all we can.

Bravo pb. First comment I’ve read in a long time that actually makes sense and tells it like it is. It’s not that anybody is anti-GM. It’s that their cars haven’t been any good for years and their unions and mgmt have refused to rebuild their cost structure…until the place fell apart. Auto industry will rebound, thanks to gov’t, but it will have to have a new business model and corporate culture.

The people that spend time bashing GM need to get some facts straight in 2009 JDPowers ran a 3 year customer staisfaction survey in overall quality Buick was #1 unseating Lexus who held that spot for many years I also worked at Moraine Assembly for 17 years and we had a trophy case full of Quality Awards such as Motor Trend Suv and Truck of the Year when we built S-10’s, one of the awards was for 2005 JDPowers Award for most efficient Plant in North America, which included Toyota,Honda, and Lexus, and all other companies building cars in our great country. The only reason GM closed Moraine Assembly is because we were IUE and not UAW,the quality of American cars and trucks is equal to or better than any other make and model with the possible exception of BMW and Mercedes, so do your research before you bash something you don”t know anything about!!

Well I see one thing that will never change. America has just been unseated as being number 1. The world knows it and Obama is here to level the playing field. We shall no longer be the sought after place to be. Jobs have been outsourced for over tex years now and thats got to hurt. One good thing about this economy. It continues to keep the top people on top. And I love to be on top. Thanks to Obama and his crooked friends I will continue to prosper off of the government.

Is everyone in the Dayton Area really that stupid? One I suggest revamping the schools so your education improves. Two, I suggest remove the confederate flags from your GM trucks that barely pass emissions that doesn’t exist anymore and Three, quit blaming affirmative action and other conspiracy theories. Blame the engineer that had short-comings in his/her planning and mathematics. Or was it your cousin Earl that made this happen. What I recall is one did not require and education to work on the GM line…

People dog GM because this used to be a GM town. It used to be thee best place to work besides wpafb. Most of the insults the GM workers brought on themselves as they used to brag about how much they got paid for doing next to nothing. Carte Blanche when it came to overtime. Drunk on the job, drugs all over the place. Lazy people who got more time off than congress. Always threatning to go on strike if they didn’t get what they wanted. Well you all see what happened to the company, they had to beg the taxpayers who couldn’t afford their overpriced junk to bail them out.

So, when can we expect to see B. Hussein in front of a Senate panel groveling for mercy? Hmmmm? And a little note to pb: you want to see the wrecking of an economy just look at this socialist/communist president and the completely incompetent leadership in congress…this will take decades to fix. You fail!

@’DMAN’: The quality you mention in GM products in no way approaches that of any foreign brand - it’s a proven fact - read Consumer Reports (tghe only true source of how autos perform and hold up). GM had a joint venture with Toyota at the (terrible) Fremont, CA., plant (known as NUMMI), and at that plant it was successful and this plant built great domestic-brand autos because Toyota taught GM employees its successful method of building cars - but failed when the union resisted it at the Van Nuys, CA. assmebly plant. American workers can build quality products as proven by Honda since 1982 at Marysville, OH., followed by Toyota and others when they’re given the chance with good manufacturing methods, good planning, and good materials - something GM, Ford, and Chrysler have never had. I’ve owned Hondas since 1986, and would never consider any domestic brand auto - and I come from (and was an employee of) a GM town (at one time) - Dayton, OH., - at one time the third-largest concentration of GM outside of Detroit, so I know a bit about what I speak of. The problem with the Moraine plant was they built what no one wanted - and GM didn’t react (as do the foreign brands) in a timely manner to reinvest and be current to its customers wants and needs. GM, Ford, and Chrysler have never been able to assmeble a good compact or mid-size car (and their other products are, at best,’questionable’), as they’re not the ‘money makers’ the bigger units had been - they place little emphasis on that sector of autos - and that sector has been the best-selling in the automotive industry - proof again that domestic brands’ management doesn’t react to its customers’ needs and desires - thus they have a terrible reputation for value, quality and dependability and they failed.
