Marion’s brings back 1965 prices today

Reminder: Today, Aug. 10, all seven Marion’s Piazza locations will be turning back the clock to 1965 to recognize the restaurant’s 44th anniversary.

marions.JPG
This picture, by former DDN staffer Bill Reinke, was taken at the Shroyer Road Marion’s during the restaurant’s last anniversary celebration in 2005.

In honor of that milestone, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today, Marion’s will have its original 1965 menu and prices — a small cheese pizza for 80 cents, large deluxe pizza for $2.50, giant sandwich for 50 cents (half) to $1 (whole), spaghetti with sauce for 75 cents ($1 with meatballs) and Italian salads for 25 cents.

But be prepared to wait a bit, since this one-day sale has a history of drawing quite a crowd. The sale is usually every five years, and the next celebration was due in 2010.

As reported on this blog last week, Marion’s owner Roger Glass moved the anniversary celebration up a year due to the economy.

“It has been a tough year for people in Dayton, so we felt we had to do something — give something back,” Glass said.

Area restaurants are at 711 Shroyer Road in Oakwood, 50 E. Stroop Road in Kettering, 241 N. Main St. in Centerville, 8991 Kingsridge Drive in Miami Twp., 1320 N. Fairfield Road in Beavercreek, 3443 N. Dixie Drive in Dayton and 404 W. National Road in Englewood.

I have not heard that any locations have closed, but have a call in to the owner just in case. I would be surprised if they did run out, since they have run these promotions before and know how much to stock. If I hear of any closings, I will update this post.

Would you like some pizza with your salt? That pizza is so disgusting, they should be paying people to take it instead of charging them..even $0.80 is too much.

We went to Kingsridge, waited outside for about 20 mins, another 20 inside, then another hour and a half until our number was called. it was silly, but fun, and great pizza! we just finished eating. :)

I just put the ribs I made for dinner in the frig and will be one of the crazy people hanging out at Marions. If you have a happy go lucky attitude about it (which Salty Dog apparently hasn’t) it should be fun!

My wife and I arrived at the Kettering/Town & Country Marion’s at 3:40 p.m., right after the storm ended, and got our pizzas ($1.90 for a large pepperoni) at about 5:25 p.m. Customers were patient, and there was a good vibe as people who had never met one another struck up conversations while they were waiting. If you go into it with an open mind and a lot of patience, this promotion is both a community event and a great bargain.

Reply: First the only idiots in my book are the ones who stood in line for 2 hours for crappy pizza. I do sincerely appreciate what Marion’s is doing for others, and I do have a happy, go-lucky attitude!!! I just don’t like Marion’s pizza. For those of you who do, I’m really happy for. I’m glad you enjoyed standing in line. Don’t get so worked up about someone exercising his right to free speech.

Apparently there are some Marion’s haters out there (e.g. Salty Dog). I love Marion’s so much I waited over 3 hours for a large supreme for $2.50. I can’t think of a better use of my time. Once I got it home I did things to that pizza that I can’t speak of here, but it well worth the wait. Did I mention I have salt burns?

NCR could learn a thing or two from the owner’s of Marion’s Piazza. What a lovely thing to do for the people of Dayton. Oh, and the pizza ROCKS—best on the planet. Thanks Marion’s — long may you bake, and always in Dayton.

Was at the Centerville location 9 years ago during this event! Had a blast. Marion’s has a great system to get you in & out as fast as they can bake the pizzas. Just ask my 82 year old mom who waited in line for us as we had to work during the day!

My son worked an honest and difficult 14 hour day at Marion’s Monday but was thrilled to have the job. He said the other employees jokingly said that if they did it again next year (this was a year early - generally every five years) that they hope to have another job before then! Good for us, good for them, good for our local economy.

This was my third time working the anniversary sale. What a great time we had Monday! (Although I’m still recovering.)Marion’s customers are the greatest and Roger(Marion’s son)is great to give us a chance to show how much we appreciate them!
