Are we really surprised they bungled the upgrade? Time Warner Update

In today’s paper (July 4), Dave Larsen wrote about Time Warner’s recent upgrade and resulting debacle. On a rainy day like today… oh how we are reminded of their efforts/failings.

AS he noted, the stated goal of the upgrade was to offer a list of updated features, but was has resulted, at least in my experience, has been a system that is simply one channel change away from a restart. But should TW customers have been surprised?

Back in March, TW started the process of upgrading the system and managed to bungle and baffle the users with mixed messages in its marketing and information campaign. Not to mention the fact their system upgrade erased the recording que, not once, not twice but THREE times.

The problem for consumers looking for dependable - high-quality services in the Dayton market is that there is truly little choice. Okay, we could do without TV… (not really an option). Yes there is satellite, but it is plagued with its own set of service issues. The promise of the internet for delivery could be stalled if Time Warner and other internet service providers start charging for internet usage by the byte. So what’s a TV watcher to do?

Since this industry has been protected/restricted in Ohio by the state and local municipalities, it seems it is time for our elected officials to find a solution. Think about the transformation in the telephone industry after deregulation.

I really don’t think it is too much to ask of any service provider to deliver what they are selling in a seamless, user friendly way… do you?

I’ve been a Dish subscriber for almost two years and won’t go back to TW. Dish is cheaper and better and doesn’t raise it’s price every time it hiccups. There are signal losses, but they are not as bad or as long as I feared/expected when I was considering switching. Dish forever, TW, never!

I’ve been a Dish Network subscriber for 6 years now with no problems. Sure, the thing loses signal in heavy storms, but I can live with that in light of how bad Time Warner cable is. You talk about alternative provdiers.. Who else is there? Comcast? Their customer service is rated worse than TW. AT&T has their U-Verse product that they’re slowly deploying. Its going to be a big flop, plus AT&T customer service is no better than TW. The only possible bright spot is if Verizon moves into the area. Their FIOS and TV products are great….. If you can get it deployed to your home…

Time Warner sucks! People who work there hate it. The company as a whole is a joke. Thousands of people would not have Time Warner service anymore if there were options but there just is not.

Question for you, Craig. Following the link you provided back to your March 2008 blog entry, I note a truckload of obvious spam. Now the DDN blogsite says that commenting is moderated and blog responses will wait in a queue for approval by an administrator. So why is all that crap in the archive?

'Hamlet 2' [movies]

Plenty of laughs are in store in the comedy smash of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Steve Coogan plays high-school drama coach Dana Marschz. While trying to stage a lighthearted sequel to Shakespeare's famous tragedy he faces laughable hardships including a bender that leaves him lurching into a liquor store on roller skates in search of the cheapest booze. His flock of students includes one mute girl who's the object of as many random assaults as Kenny from "South Park." And the stage production at the movie's climax includes a song called "Rock Me, Sexy Jesus." More »
