Latest Update: ‘American Idol’ Top 10 headed toward the finale

Top 10 take the stage

The theme tonight is songs from “The year they were born.”

Ramiele Malubay
Tonight’s song - Heart’s Alone
My Take - It’s good to know she was sick - she was all over the place
Randy - It’s a little too big of a song choice for you - it was a little pitchy.
Paula - I give you a tremendous amount of credit - you are really sick.
Simon - I don’t think it was as bad as Randy said.

Jason Castro
Tonight’s song - Fragile
My Take - Tonight’s performance may have been one of his best
Randy - I thought it was alright - I’m still waiting to see that jump out vocal performance
Paula - I agree -we didn’t see anything to make us say wow
Simon - I think you had two bad weeks. It was too laid back

Syesha Mercado<
Tonight’s song - ‘If I were your woman’
My Take - Just like Jason - this was one of her best performances so far.
Randy - This is a good moment for you - this is the best I think I’ve every heard you sing
Paula - This is the moment that everyone will remember
Simon - It was the best so far - I don’t think the end part of your song was as strong as Randy thought

Chikezie
Tonight’s song - ‘If only for one night’
My Take - This guy can belt out a ballad. I’m guessing he’s in the top 5 overall
Randy - This went back to an old school -
Paula - I disagree Randy - it’s a good throw back. You did a great job
Simon - I think you sang it well - the performance was cheesy

Brooke White
Tonight’s song - ‘Every breath you take’
My Take - Not a performance that made me think she’d be the next American Idol.
Randy - It was just okay for me
Paula - I enjoyed this performance so much more than last week
Simon - If you’d just stayed with you on the piano - definitely good enough to keep you around for another week.

Michael Johns
Tonight’s song - Queen
My Take - Pretty strong performance through and through
Randy -Finally you believe in yourself - that was the best performance for me
Paula - This was your shinning moment
Simon - This is the first time with you I saw star potential. - you just got it right - it was the only memorable performance of the night so far

Carly Smithson
Tonight’s song - ‘Total eclipse of the heart’
My Take - Good cover if nothing else - I think she played it pretty safe
Randy - I didn’t love it - it was just okay for me
Paula - I love what you did at the end
Simon - Something didn’t quite work - you were so tense and uptight - something didn’t quite work

David Archuleta
Tonight’s song - ‘You’re the Voice’
My Take - Where did that song come from? I don’t remember that one at all. part of it work and the rest was a little too safe for me.
Randy - It was a strange song choice - you can sing whatever
Paula - You could sing the phone book and we would love it
Simon - I dindn’t like the performance at all - reminiscent of a theme park performance

Kristy Lee Cook
Tonight’s song - ‘God Bless the USA’
My Take - The song fit her - but really it’s Lee Greenwood’s song
Randy - Great song choice - very nice performance
Paula - Very good choice for you
Simon - Your best peformance by a mile

David Cook
Tonight’s song - ‘BIlly Jean’
My Take - Who knew you could slow that song down that much? Yet - somehow it worked - I’m shocked - that may have been the best performance of the night
Randy - I got to say - the most original most bold - you might be the one to win the whole lot - HOT
Paula - I got to tell you - how bold you are - I think you are brilliant
Simon - That was brave - It was amazing

Who do you think will go?

So here are my rankings for tonight: David C - while it might not be as original as the judges gushed, this was a strong performance! It’s a great song to begin with, and his voice drew you into the story. Loved it. Michael - Haven’t been a big fan of his, but this was a very wise choice. While it might not have the pure simplicity many on here love, it showed off the power of his voice and got the audience involved. Also a plus - he didn’t bop! Syesha - Again, I haven’t liked her (she’s too robo-singer, always acting for me), but this was a very good performance. Strong vocals, fit her style well. Insert gap here. T4. Brooke - While the overall performance wasn’t her strongest by a mile, the piano and pure vocals were a lovely touch at the beginning. While I’m a big fan, I worry that she’s going to start to bore people. T4. Carly - I’m with Simon - something was just missing here. Her vocals were good. However, she seemed disconnected from the song. She never really moved, and this is a powerful song, not one just to stand and sing on. Plus, you can’t flub lyrics on a classic 80s anthem (powder keg, not power keg). Jason - It was good. Nice. Same old. Liked the Spanish. David A - Not a fan, and this reinforced why. He is his strongest with sappy ballads, and the songs that aren’t he often tries to sing with the same style, which you just can’t do. It wasn’t awful, but I was bored to tears. Chikezie - It wasn’t as bad as Simon made it sound. I like C’s voice, love the textures to his voice (hey look - Pauler made a lucid comment!). Still, it wasn’t memorable, which can be the kiss of death on this show. Kristy - Smart, smart woman. This song was actually a nice fit for her voice. Stay away from your upper register, though - it gets a big strained and painful when she tries to change the melody up. Best performance for her thus far. Ramiele - I know she was sick, and I feel bad for her, but that was ghastly. Pitch all over the place, oversinging… I was literally cringing the entire song. Had it been just one bad performance, I wouldn’t have put her at 10, but she’s been boring since the Top 12 first sang. Overall, I enjoyed the performances tonight!

Hey there, Slimjim - thankfully - they did give credit - unlike when Daugthry got credit for Red Hot Chili Peppers version of “Walk the Line”. Ryan Seacrest actually said, “With Chris Cornell’s version of Billie Jean, here’s David Cook.” So that is good that they gave credit for that outside-the-box arrangement. I mean - everyone is up there doing other people’s songs - right? I give him props for not playing it safe and going with a non-conventional version of a well known song. And he nailed it - the best performance for me. This was actually the first time I have watched since auditions and I was mostly underwhelmed. The only other one that interested me at all was Syesha - the rest of them can be tossed. Jason needs some one to slap him and wake him up…zzzzz. I had heard so much about Archuleta, and I was like - HUH? What’s the big deal? And what a stupid song choice. He may need some more growing up. I may watch again to see if I change my mind - but David Cook is the contestant voted most likely to get me to tune in again.

David Cook, you’re a hack. Way to steal Chris Cornell’s cover of Billie Jean and not give him credit. At least the judges all thought it was original. Search youtube for epXN1eUkFGU

Ramiele and Jason are boring and could go at any point for me. Kristy saved herself, pulling out a patriotic song to rally her fans and doing it as well as she has performed so far. What is it that people find so good about David Archuleta? I don’t think he ever will be a pop star.

I agree with everything you said! My bottom 3 would be Brooke, Carly, and Ramiele/Kristy. Kristy and Ramiele did good 2nite, but they were so-so. Syesha blew it out the park! David Cook was awesome! David A. was… I don’t know. Overall it was a good night on AI.
