National study to determine ‘American Idol’ winners

So some cool news today from BusinessWire.com. Apparently, in response to the growing controversy over the voting process used by American Idol, HCD Research announced today that it will conduct a study among Americans to determine the weekly winners of the American Idol contest.

Anyway “the study” will be conducted using a national sample by HCD’s MediaCurves.com web site. Participants will be given an identification number and then directed to a password protected website where they can vote one time, unlike the current process in which viewers can vote multiple times. Participants will also rate performances in other ways and results will be posted on: www.mediacurves.com at 3 p.m. Eastern Time on April 11.

In case you’re interested, Media Curve’s provide the media and general public with a venue to view Americans’ perceptions of popular and controversial media events and advertisements. HCD Research specializes in conducting research for the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, financial and entertainment industries, among others.

I read somewhere, forgive me for not remembering where, that the reason American’s are not allowed to vote multiple times in elections is because there is too much chance for abuse. People would eventually find a way to cheat the system. Now I’m not being so bold as to compare the importance of American Idol to our elected officials, but it does kind of make you wonder. Is the intent to be fair or to gain ratings? Well, I guess we all know the answer to that question.

Just a couple interesting things to ponder. Do you think American Idol should allow only one vote per person?
