With the Top 12 looming the ‘American Idol’ girls step it up.
Thank goodness some of the girls stepped it up this week.
I agree that Paris Bennett is a very talented young lady and will probably sail through to the Top 12, but she better start choosing better songs or she won’t stay until the end. The Conga is a fun song, but it’s still too old for her. Why not something more current? Paris, try Destiny’s Child, Brandy (celebrity sighting) or even Gwen Stefani.
Lisa Tucker performed her song beautifully and the wardrobe police definitely helped her image this week, but it just didn’t get where it needed to be. I wanted love it, but something is just missing. It’s got to be song selection again. Lisa, oh, oh, I would love to see you try Jennifer Lopez or Janet Jackson.
Melissa McGhee chose a Heart song, which was gutsy. I was excited because I thought she would blow it away with that raspy, sexy voice, but alas she didn’t. It was okay, but I agree with Simon that it sounded like she shouted a good part of the song. I would love to see her try Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavigne or even Pink if she lasts. I’m voting for her because I’ve always like her and she is getting better. On a side note, did she get her belly button pierced since last week? I didn’t see it before and I think I would have caught it. Anyone else?
Kinnik Sky chose the right song and sang it in the wrong keys. Yes I said keys, plural. She was all over the place. It’s not that she can’t sing; she’s just not an American Idol. I’m with Simon; she’s gone this week.
Katharine McPhee was great. Perfect song for her vocal skills and it showcased her enthusiastic personality. I’ve always favored her and she did not disappoint this week. One tip Katharine…under wire bras offer a lot more support, less bounce. Although I suspect the guys didn’t mind, I could tell she was a bit self conscious.
Ayla Brown sang my current favorite song by Natasha Bedingfield. Sorry Ayla fans, I just can’t come around to liking her. I don’t see anything behind her eyes. She looks like she’s having fun, but it’s just not real. I fear she’ll stay around and I’ll be mad that someone I like better will go home. It would be fun to see how she would do with a Jewel or a Nora Jones song.
Mandisa, Mandisa, Mandisa. You go girl! She could record and release this song right now. Great choice for her vocal range, good fit for her personality, just awesome! She has been another one of my favorites from the beginning. I think she should try Queen Latifah or Missy Elliot. And Mandisa, more flattering wardrobe choice this week. Good job.
Kellie Pickler will actually make it through this week on great song choice, a good vocal and a surprising performance… not just the adorable factor. Then she speaks and the adorable factor kicks in and seals the deal. That little mink. ; ) Kellie should do a sexy Shania Twain or the Dixie Chicks.
Okay, what’s the deal with Simon and Carrie Underwood? I’ve heard him slam her a couple times before. Carrie seems just as sweet as Kellie; maybe not as adorable or naïve. Interesting. We’ll have to try to investigate this one a little more.
Predictions: Kinnik and Melissa will be gone, but it should be Kinnik and don’t kill me…Ayla. No throwing virtual tomatoes and eggs ladies.

I love Melissa’s belly button! I want her to wear a shirt that shows more of her stomach.

Well, Kelle - at least I can say I’m consistent - I don’t like Kevin either. I shake my head in wonderment - I was SHOCKED when he got his golden ticket, MORE shocked when he made the final 24, now I darn near need tranquilizers to reconcile myself to the fact that he is still there. “Cute” does not an American Idol make - it takes more than that. ANd personally I don’t even find him cute. What REALLY blows me away is that the judges praise him!! HUH??? He is great in a “high school musical” kind of way - but an American Idol??? NO way!

Oh, the Kellie issue. Yes, she’s cute, yes, she’s nice. Blah, blah, blah. I just don’t think her voice has been that great. I don’t think she has great stage presence either. And overall, she’s just annoying. But, Kelle - I’m with you on the Kevin issue - HOW DID HE MAKE IT THIS FAR??????

Even though Ayla sang my current favorite song (too!) I wasn’t sold. And I really didn’t think that Katharine did her song justice. I mean it’s Aretha - not just anyone can do that. I did really think that Mandisa did the best - a Chaka Khan song was the perfect choice!

I have a question. It’s for me as much as anyone else. I personally think Kellie Pickler is adorable, despite her innocent naiveté and the fact that she is not the best singer in the competition. I don’t think she will win, but I hope she moves on. However, I cannot stand little Kevin Covais. Can’t stand the lisp and think he needs to go home. What’s with that? Seems like a huge contradiction. Anyone else feel the same way?

One more about Kellie - sorry! I fail to understand the dislike of Kellie because she’s too nice, too cute, too niave, etc. I guess those things don’t make a good ‘idol’…

Jodi - I understand your point about naive vs. dumb - and I reckon Kellie is definitely naive. But I guess I compare her to my 15 year old daughter. We live in a small city of about 30,000, smack dab in the midwest miles away from any coast - but she still knows how to pronounce “salmon”. Of course - I DO realize this is a singing competition and not an English class - but I just think the cute factor is overstated and I’m having a terrible time overcoming the hurl factor. But then different tastes make our world go round, don’t they? :)

Kim, I am with you 100% - she drives me nuts! I hate to see people with bubbly personalities but just ok voices get through when people with legitimate talent (ie, Melissa) should be! It’s so stupid.

KIM: There is a big difference in being ignorant dumb blond and naiveté’, Kellie Pickler is the later and that’s why she is so endearing. You can be smart and naive at the same time. Let’s be honest, Kellie has made very smart song choices they last few weeks. Better than the beloved Paris, Lisa, and Ayla!!!

Mandisa Rocked!Kellie was cute last night. I don’t think she is a great singer but she has the cute factor. I think Kannick and Melissa are going home tonight.

WHEW! I do feel much better now, Kelle! LOL. I just don’t get it…but anyway…there are other girls there! I have been becoming increasingly disappointed with Paris. She was an early favorite for me, but I agree that she still isn’t letting her youth work for her. The only girls left that I like are Katharine and Mandisa. Katharine did much better last night - but the wardrobe police didn’t do their job - solid black from head to toe? I felt like I was watching a musical where a cat burglar had just burst into song or something. Her performance was great though - no napping this week. :) And Mandisa owned it last night - she got it absolutely right. Kinnick should be gone - Alicia Keyes tunes should be like drugs - just say no. Alicia’s vocals and arrangements are incredibly complex and difficult to sing, and Kinnick’s voice just isn’t strong enough. Looking forward to the guys tonight!!

Kim - I wish I were as eloquent as you! :) I am totally on the same page about Kellie. I don’t get it either. I don’t think she’s that great - and if they’re going to say that Melissa screamed through part of her song, they should say the same thing about Kellie. But, Kellie has that stupid likability factor that Melissa doesn’t. America (and the judges) must like hicks!

Ok, I am NOT a Kellie Pickler fan, but I have to admit that I thought she was better last night. Sorry Kim! I have a feeling we’ll be seeing her for a long time to come. Kinnik and Ayla should go, but Kinnik and Melissa WILL go…

Okay - first - I just have to make a post dedicated solely to Kellie, and I’ll get back to the rest later. I DON’T get it!!!! I have NO trouble not liking her. Cute? Yeah - she would be cute if she were like FIVE. But since she is over the age of 12 - she just comes across to me as the stereotypical “dumb blonde” like I said weeks ago. I have never found ignorance to be adorable. And her performance was a cookie cutter of last week - right down to the bangs hanging in her face - I see no variety to this chick - she’s a one trick pony…

Nick, I agree wholeheartedly about Melissa getting better each week and I hope she stays. Do you really think she looks that much like Molly Shannon? I think Melissa is prettier and has a sex appeal that Molly Shannon does not. Hope you voted for her last night. I did.

SMACK! How are those rotten eggs I just threw at you, Kelle?? You’ve never liked Ayla and I’ve come to the realization that you will never! I like her - not so much last night - but, I’d take her over Kellie Pickler ANY DAY!! Kellie is just not doing it for me - not since her first audition - but, she’ll stick around. Mandisa and Katharine were the stars for me last night. They both did great - great song choices. I still love Lisa Tucker, but I wasn’t blown away last night. For me - I’d like to say Buh-Bye to Kinnik and Kellie! (even though the latter won’t happen!)

The girls just aren’t exciting this year like past shows. I found myself fast forwarding past the first few chords of a several songs. Thank goodness for Mandisa and Katharine. If not for them, I would just skip the ladies and watch the guys on Wednesday night. I enjoyed Paris’ dance moves - it gave her performance an extra kick. All I can say is..bring on the men. I can’t wait to see what Chris, Ace and Elliott will sing.

Poor Melissa. While I dont’ think she is the best…. yet, I dont’ think she should go home. She has improved greatly and is actually starting to be pretty good, they just haven’t showcased her personality enough. It’s also hard to get over looking like Molly Shannon.

Who couldn’t love Kellie after last night? “I had a saLmon” - that was just too cute :) I think Simon has a mini crush on her… Mandisa rocked! She was so awesome, definately the best performance of the night. Last night was the ONLY time I’ve even kind of liked Melissa. I like that she did a Heart song and I think she did a halfway decent job. Better than usual at least… My girl Katherine did a fab job - I liked her singing a more upbeat song. I’m betting Kinnik and Melissa take a trip home.

Way to go Mandisa. Loved ya, loved ya, loved ya. Ayla, you need to go home tonight. You probably won’t, but you need to. If you’re going to sing a song that is currently on the charts, you better do it better than the original and you didn’t. Melisa you rocked tonight but not quite as much as Kellie did. Way to go Kellie. Lisa and Paris better song choice. Two weeks in a row you’ve disappointed me. Kinnik you’re going home. My five year old can sing more on key with Alicia Keyes than you did. Really, I’m serious. Simon, you really pissed me off with the Carrie Underwood comment. Don’t dog your current Idol. Grow up.
